Two outstanding teams, one grand spectacle in store in Pune

Both teams are in the top three at this stage, and the winners of this game will feel very secure about their future

Manjrekar: South Africa still don’t look convincing

Big picture – Not a must-win, but a win-for-momentumIt started with a World Cup quarter-final that turned into a proper scrap in Mirpur in 2011. It marked the arrival of a cricket rivalry that isn’t talked about a lot, but often gives us games that ain’t good for the heart – just like the rugby World Cup final from a few nights ago.Auckland 2015 and Birmingham 2019, the two most recent men’s ODI World Cup fixtures since the rivalry sprung to life, were both thrillers of different kinds. One a semi-final with everything on the line, and the other a league fixture, like Wednesday’s will be. This one will dictate how the top half of the points table shapes up heading into the last bit of the league stage. All told, for three straight men’s World Cups in a row, the New Zealand games have been must-wins for South Africa; in fact, South Africa have lost five World Cup games in a row to New Zealand. In Pune on Wednesday, the stakes aren’t as high, given both teams are still pretty comfortably placed for the semi-finals, but it’s one both sides will want to win for momentum’s sake at the very least.Related

NZ are good, and nobody knows it better than the SA coach

Coetzee: A scary all-round package in the making

Tea for two with Tim and Trent

New Zealand endured back-to-back losses to India and Australia as their smooth sail of a campaign – they had started with four wins on the trot – hit a rough patch amid a growing list of niggles. South Africa have been gung-ho, proving their only loss – to Netherlands – was an aberration, their batting depth looking increasingly menacing and bowling effective enough, as they were expected to be.Their one-wicket win over Pakistan in Chennai the other night saved them from that dreaded word that had begun doing the rounds even as their lower order collapsed, before Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi saw them home. A favourable result in Pune will further underpin their status as one of the dominant teams at this World Cup. That they aren’t great chasers, though, is a suggestion they haven’t been able to dispel. Results and all that aside, the match promises an explosive cocktail of firepower with the bat, and thrill with the ball. There’s aesthetics in the form of Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Rassie van der Dussen, big-hitting from Henrich Klaasen, David Miller and Glenn Phillips, and the genius of Quinton de Kock to boot. With the ball, there’s pace royalty in the form of Kagiso Rabada, the swing of Trent Boult, the hustle of Gerald Coetzee, and the bounce of Marco Jansen – each of them brings a unique flavour that makes fast bowling thrilling. If all of them play, it’ll truly mark a spectacle. Now for a good pitch and great weather to make it all come together.Form guideNew Zealand LLWWW

Van der Dussen: ‘We’re blessed that we’re in a great space now’

In the spotlight – Temba Bavuma and Rachin RavindraIn a top order that has mostly been in top gear, Temba Bavuma seems some sort of a weak link at the moment for South Africa. He has had starts in three of his four innings, but hasn’t been able to top 35. As such, Bavuma is an accumulator, but has seemed anxious at different times to break out of that mould. It hasn’t worked yet. While there is no threat to his captaincy, he’ll want a big score to feel a bit more at ease. Will he? Won’t he? Kane Williamson has walked around with more questions on his fitness and participation during this campaign than he has at any other point in his career. Williamson is not fit yet, but in his absence, Rachin Ravindra has made the No. 3 spot his own. Williamson’s presence as part of the leadership group has lent a lot of calm and tactical nous, but he would be itching to return and make an impact. As for Ravindra, he is already making plenty of it.Team newsKagiso Rabada missed the previous game because of a niggle, but is understood to be fit and is expected to return to the XI. That’ll mean South Africa will be left with a tricky call on whom to leave out. Gerald Coetzee and Tabraiz Shamsi both had important roles to play in their win over Pakistan in Chennai, but one of them will probably have to make way, depending on the pitch.South Africa (probable): 1 Temba Bavuma (capt), 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Gerald Coetzee/Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Lungi NgidiNew Zealand have an injury list that’s slowly growing. Lockie Ferguson bowled all of three overs before walking off with a heel injury against Australia. Mark Chapman is recovering from a minor calf strain. Tim Southee was on the mend for a broken finger, but might be ready to return. Williamson has resumed training, but he has been ruled out of the game against South Africa, while Ferguson will take a fitness test before the toss.New Zealand (probable): 1 Will Young, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Tom Latham (capt, wk), 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Glenn Phillips, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Jimmy Neesham, 9 Matt Henry, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Tim Southee/Lockie Ferguson2:29

Latham: ‘Focusing on the things that we do well’

Pitch and conditionsPune is unusually hot and dry for this time of the year, but the surfaces have been good for batting, with even bounce and excellent carry. In the two games so far, dew hasn’t had too big an effect, but it should be humid. The toss might not be too big a factor if the dew stays away.Stats and trivia Conway has been dismissed twice in six games by left-arm spin at this World Cup. South Africa have Maharaj in the mix. In all, Conway has hit 17 runs off the 21 balls from bowlers of this variety. It’s only a small sample size but worth looking out for nonetheless, especially given that he loves the sweep shot, and Pune has relatively bigger squares. Ravindra’s tally of 406 runs is already the most by a New Zealander in his maiden World Cup. The standout aspect has been his game against spin – he has scored 210 against them at a strike rate of 109. His eight sixes are the most against spinners in the tournament so far. South Africa’s seven 300-plus totals in a row batting first in ODIs – including four this World Cup – is the longest streak in the game. They have hit the most sixes and fours, and have the most hundreds (six) in the tournament. South Africa’s pace pack has taken 44 wickets at an average and a strike rate of 23.3 and 23.5, respectively. Their wickets tally and their bowling strike rate are the best for a team in this World Cup.Quotes”We’ve got a few guys to get through a few fitness tests, and I guess once we train, we’ll have a clearer idea of what the XI looks like. So fingers crossed all those guys can get through a bit of work today at training and be ready to go tomorrow.”

“It feels like that question could have been asked a few days ago as well – with regards to Pakistan. So no, no chat really about that. I mean, that’s all in the past. We don’t really carry any of that with us.”

All eyes are now on whether Postecoglou can resurrect Tottenham’s form with this influx of returning first-team stars, but if their form doesn’t pick up quickly, the 59-year-old will face more calls for his resignation.

According to some reports, Spurs are doing their due-diligence on possible managerial candidates for the future.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank would be a top target to replace Postecoglou (TEAMtalk), while the Italian media have reported that Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi has admirers within Tottenham as well.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzić, who guided the Bundesliga side to an unexpected Champions League final last term, is also thought to be among the potential contenders to succeed Postecoglou (TEAMtalk).

Another name who’s believed to be high on Spurs’ shortlist is Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

The Spaniard has marked himself out as a standout candidate amid his stellar job at the Vitality Stadium, leading the Cherries to seventh as they push for a Champions League place, which is all the more impressive considering their own injury problems right now.

Andoni Iraola stalls talks over new Bournemouth deal as Tottenham linger

As per The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, Spurs have been given some hope in regard to Iraola’s availability.

It is believed that Iraola has told Bournemouth he doesn’t wish to open new contract talks right now, coming as Tottenham express an interest in him as one of the possible names to succeed Postecoglou.

The north Londoners sniffing around Iraola is said to be privately worrying Bournemouth officials, even if they’re confident he’ll eventually stay, with Man City considering him to replace Pep Guardiola before the manager put pen to paper on a new deal.

Liverpool also apparently had Iraola on their list of candidates when they were hunting for Jürgen Klopp’s heir, so he is a tactician who’s very highly-rated by elite Premier League sides.

Former City defender Nedum Onuoha, speaking on the BBC’s Planet Premier League podcast, is among the pundits who’ve heralded Iraola’s “incredibly impressive” work on the south coast.

'We should have batted better' – simple as that, Shanto says after Bangladesh's sub-par show

He stressed that Bangladesh batting only left-hand batters in their top four was not the issue

Mohammad Isam01-Sep-20231:14

Jaffer: Shanto will be upset that he didn’t bat through to the end

Najmul Hossain Shanto scored half of Bangladesh’s runs in their first Asia Cup match, against Sri Lanka. Extending his bright form from the last ten months, he got stuck in to the Sri Lanka bowlers and tried to stitch partnerships in the middle overs only for Towhid Hridoy and Mushfiqur Rahim to fail to build on their starts.Shanto lasted till the 42nd over and missed out on his second ODI hundred, possibly hampered by the procession at the other end.Pallekele is a venue where teams win averaging 280-plus batting first in day-night ODIs. Shanto said that Bangladesh batted first because they knew even a slightly lower (that 280) total would have been hard to chase but a lack of top-order partnerships cost them the game.Related

Shining, shimmering, splendid – the rise and rise of Matheesha Pathirana

Pathirana, Asalanka lead Sri Lanka to vital opening win

“Our initial plan was to look to score around 250-260,” Shanto said after the game. “Batting was quite easy against the new ball, but it got harder as the ball got older. It wasn’t an easy wicket, but we should have put together partnerships in the top order. We should have batted better. We don’t want to make these mistakes in the next game.”We thought we should bat first after looking at the wicket. We all agreed with the captain and coach’s decision. We didn’t bat well. I wouldn’t call it an easy wicket, but we should have batted better.”Bangladesh lost debutant Tanzid Hasan, Mohammad Naim and Shakib Al Hasan within the first 11 overs. Shanto and Hridoy, and later Rahim, tried to revive the innings but the Sri Lanka bowlers kept them on a leash with regular wickets. The tail caved in quickly and predictably. They faltered against the unorthodox pairing of Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana, who shared figures of 6 for 51 in 15.4 overs. Shanto, however, said that neither the type of bowling nor the fact that Bangladesh’s top four was made up of only left-handers – for the first time in 12 years in an ODI – hurt them.”We were prepared to face all types of bowling, so we are all capable to bat in any situation and against any bowling attack. I don’t think [the top four being left-handers] was a big problem,” he said. “We don’t have such bowlers in our country. We prepared with whatever resources we have. He [Pathirana] is a good bowler. But I will say that we have done well against good bowling attacks. It didn’t happen today. It will be okay in the next game.”Shanto said that their most recent performance against Afghanistan – beating them in the T20I series at home last month – will be on their mind as they face them in Lahore.”We did well in the T20I series against Afghanistan,” he said. “We didn’t do well in the ODIs [which they lost 2-1], but we are not too worried about the past. We have a good team. We believe that if we can play our cricket, we can get a good result against Afghanistan.”We have to win the next game. I think it is possible [to make to the next round]. But I would rather plan and prepare for the next match rather than think too far ahead. If we can beat Afghanistan, we will think about the other stuff.”

Jones, Green half-centuries guide Sparks to crucial win over Storm

Duo stage match-winning third-wicket alliance of 106 in 15 overs

ECB Reporters Network13-Sep-2023

Eve Jones and Maddy Green scored contrasting half-centuries to guide Central Sparks to a crucial seven-wicket win over Western Storm and keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy finals.Sparks captain Jones grafted her way to 84 from 113 balls, while New Zealand international Green plundered a quickfire 64 from 56 deliveries with 10 fours as the visitors chased down a target of 242 with 35 deliveries in hand at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton. The two staged a match-winning alliance of 106 in 15 overs for the third wicket, while in-form Abi Freeborn made a useful 44 as the visitors broke down Storm resistance to prevail with something to spare.Nat Wraith top-scored with 39 and shared in a defiant stand of 64 with Katie Jones, and Sophia Smale and Chloe Skelton added 60 for the eighth wicket as Storm fought back from 113 for 5 in the 29th over to post 241 for 8 after being put into bat.But a succession of batters failed to capitalise on good starts as Sparks took wickets at regular intervals to remain in control, Katie George claiming 2 for 49 against her former teammates and off-spinner Georgia Davis weighing in with 2 for 32 from 10 overs with two maidens to take her haul in the 50-over competition to 25 this season.A sixth win in 13 group games means Sparks will go into their final fixture against South East Stars at Edgbaston on Saturday in the knowledge that victory could secure them a place in the finals later this month. Having suffered three straight defeats, bottom-of-the-table Storm will be looking to salvage some pride when they conclude their campaign against Thunder at Old Trafford this weekend.Having fallen just short with the bat, Storm needed to take early wickets if they were to put the visitors under pressure. Sure enough, slow left armer Smale took the new ball and bowled Beth Ellis in the seventh over with the score on 14.But the experienced pair of Jones and Freeborn steadied the ship in a reassuring partnership of 83 in 17.5 overs for the second wicket to keep the chase on track. Emboldened by the brilliant unbeaten hundred she scored in her last innings against Sunrisers at Chelmsford on Sunday, Freeborn helped herself to six boundaries to break the stranglehold exerted by Storm’s bowlers. She had scored 44 from 57 balls and had her sights on a half-century when she played across the line to Alex Griffiths and was bowled with the score on 97 in the 25th over.Crucially for Sparks, Smale put down an extremely difficult return catch in the next over to give Jones a life on 41, and the former England batter took full advantage to move to 50 from 79 balls. If Jones played cautiously as befitted her status as captain, Green adopted a more aggressive approach as the partnership realised 50 in 46 balls. The pugnacious Green struck seven fours on her way to a 47-ball half-century, the 30-year-old Kiwi effectively taking the game away from an inexperienced Storm team that did themselves no favours by conceding 30 in extras. Smale eventually had Green stumped by Jones to finish with 2 for 38, but Jones remained at large to see the job through with Ami Campbell.Put in to bat on a used track, Storm struggled to build the partnerships necessary to post a truly competitive total. Four top and middle order batters played themselves in to pass 30, but none was able to reach 50 let alone go on and stage the meaningful score needed to propel their team into a position of ascendancy.Emma Corney and Alex Griffiths began well enough in an opening stand of 38 until the latter was bowled by George for 18, while Grace Potts struck in the following over, knocking back Sophie Luff’s off stump to reduce the hosts to 43 for 2.Davis and Hannah Baker then claimed combined figures of 2 for 49 in 12 overs as spin frustrated Storm’s quest for momentum during the crucial middle overs. Davis struck first ball from the River End to remove Corney for 32 and Baker beat Niamh Holland in the flight and bowled her for seven. Beth Ellis accounted for experienced campaigner Fran Wilson, held at mid-wicket for 30, as stuttering Storm subsided to 113-5 in the 29th over.Wraith and Jones provided a much-needed change in tempo, the sixth wicket pair staging a restorative stand of 64 in 9.3 overs as Storm displayed character aplenty to fight back. Making only her sixth appearance of the season, 17-year-old Jones sent her first three scoring shots to the boundary to announce herself in style, while Wraith adopted a similarly aggressive stance to effect a temporary change in the balance of power. But these two fell in successive overs, Wraith playing across the line and being bowled by George for a 48-ball 39 with 5 fours, and Jones stepping in front of a delivery from the returning Davis and departing for 32, her highest score for Storm.Having reduced their opponents to 179 for 7 in the 40th, Sparks’ efforts to wrap the innings up quickly were stymied by Smale and Chloe Skelton, who mustered lower-order resistance in the form of a spirited alliance of 60 in 10.2 overs. Deploying clever improvisation, teenager Smale raised 30 from 32 balls before offering a return catch to Emily Arlott in the final over, while the resourceful Skelton finished unbeaten on 26.

The 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played from June 4 to 30 next year in the Caribbean and the USA, across 10 venues, ESPNcricinfo has learned. It is understood that this week an ICC team inspected some shortlisted venues in the USA, which will be hosting an international global cricket event for the first time. These include Lauderhill in Florida, which has hosted international matches already (and is set to host West Indies vs India in the coming fortnight), Morrisville, Dallas and New York, for tournament matches and warm-ups.Morrisville and Dallas are currently hosting the inaugural edition of Major League Cricket in the USA. The grounds in Dallas (Grand Prairie Stadium), Morrisville (Church Street Park) and New York (Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx) are yet to get international venue status, which is mandatory as per ICC rules. A final decision on the venues will be taken by the ICC together with Cricket West Indies (CWI) and USA Cricket (USAC) in the next few months. This week Ireland, Scotland and Papua New Guinea qualified for the 20-team T20 World Cup via the regional qualifiers pathway put in place by the ICC. While PNG topped the East Asia-Pacific Qualifer, Ireland and Scotland finished in the top two positions in the Europe Region Qualifier. Qualifiers from the Americas (for one spot), Africa (two spots) and Asia (two spots) regions will be determined in the coming months.Construction workers put the finishing touches on Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas, ahead of this year’s MLC•Peter Della Penna

Twelve teams had already qualified for the tournament before the regional qualifiers, including hosts West Indies and USA, and the top eight teams at the 2022 T20 World Cup – Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Afghanistan and Bangladesh qualified by virtue of their spots in the T20I rankings, completing the 20-team roster. The format for the 2024 World Cup will be different to the last two editions (2020-21 in the UAE and 2022 in Australia), where the first round was followed by Super 12s. Next year, the 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five each for the first round, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the Super 8s. The Super 8 teams will be split into two groups of four each, with the top two in each group reaching the semi-finals.The 2024 T20 World Cup is the first of the eight men’s global events in the ICC’s next commercial cycle from 2024-31, which was finalised in 2021. The decision to appoint the USA as a co-host was part of a strategic move by the ICC with twin goals in mind: one, the North American market was identified as a strong market for growth of the game. And two, the ICC’s ambition to have cricket feature in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games (LA28).The USA being pencilled in to co-host a major cricket event, the ICC felt, would only help in the push for cricket’s inclusion in LA28. The ICC made a presentation to the LA28 team, with a final decision to be taken by the International Olympics Committee later this year.

Brighton eye bargain move for "goal threat" whose value could soar to £60m

da bet esporte: Brighton & Hove Albion are now eyeing a bargain summer move for a “real goal threat”, who has been tipped to be capable of playing in the Champions League.

Brighton's inconsistent form

da dobrowin: It has been a mixed start to life in the Premier League for Fabian Hurzeler, having led his Brighton side to some memorable victories, defeating Manchester City and Manchester United, but they have also been on the receiving end of some disappointing losses.

A 7-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest was the low point of the season so far, but Hurzeler’s side have since returned to form, winning their last three matches in all competitions.

As such, a push for Europe is still on the cards, but it looks unlikely at this stage, meaning the Seagulls may want to inject some extra quality into their squad at the end of the campaign to boost their chances next season.

Albion have developed a reputation for buying promising youngsters before selling them on for a huge profit, with the likes of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister making a name for themselves at the American Express Stadium.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Brighton have now been linked with what could be a similar type of move, with SportBILD reporting they are among the clubs in the race to sign Hertha BSC attacker Ibrahim Maza.

A whole host of Premier League clubs are said to be vying for Maza’s signature, with his price set to drop in the summer, having previously been valued at over €20m (£17m).

That figure is set to be halved due to a clause in the Algeria international’s contract, meaning he could be available for roughly £8m, but it may be difficult to get a deal done, given the level of interest.

Maza is one for the future

The 19-year-old only featured sporadically in the Bundesliga II last season, but he has really kicked on this term, amassing five goals and four assists in the German second tier, having primarily been utilised as an attacking midfielder.

During his time playing youth football, the teenager was also deployed at centre-forward and left-wing, so he could be a versatile option for Hurzeler in attack, should Albion be able to get a deal done.

The signing of Stefanos Tzimas demonstrated the pulling power the Seagulls have, given that there was widespread interest from some top Premier League clubs, so there is certainly a chance the Algerian ends up at the American Express Stadium.

Scout Ben Mattinson thinks the attacker will move to a club of Brighton’s stature to develop his game initially, at which point his value could soar, leading to interest from Champions League clubs.

Of course, if Maza does go on to become a top player, Hurzeler will be hoping to keep hold of him, but Brighton’s model relies on buying up-and-coming players before selling them for profit, and this seems like it could be a similar type of deal.
