Spurs doing groundwork to sign "exceptional" £55m winger; he's a key target

Tottenham Hotspur are doing the groundwork on a deal to sign an “exceptional” winger, who is now one of their key targets for the summer transfer window, according to a report.

Spurs set to strengthen in attack

It is clear Tottenham are keen on bringing in additional attacking options this summer, given that they have identified a number of potential targets in the striker department, recently stepping up their pursuit of Lille marksman Jonathan David, who is soon to be a free agent.

Arsenal are also linked with a move for David, and Spurs may also have to battle their rivals for the signature of Leeds United youngster Harry Gray, younger brother of Archie, with Premier League clubs queuing up to sign the impressive teenage striker.

Bringing in a new striker is of interest to Ange Postecoglou, and the manager also wants to refresh his wide options, with Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman being named as a potential signing earlier this month.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany is happy to offload Coman, which could make a deal easier to facilitate, but Tottenham may be more keen on an alternative option from much closer to home.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, Spurs are now doing the groundwork on a deal to sign Southampton winger Tyler Dibling, as they look to make a splash in the summer transfer window.

Southampton'sTylerDiblingcelebrates scoring their third goal

Dibling has now been identified as one of the Lilywhites’ key targets, with the 19-year-old beginning to look more likely to leave the Saints this summer, given that his side are almost certain to be relegated from the Premier League.

Postecoglou’s side could be trying to move ahead of the other clubs in the race for the starlet, who has previously been valued at £55m, with the likes of Manchester United and Crystal Palace also named as potential suitors.

Dibling excelling despite Saints' struggles

It has been a season to forget for Southampton, who are still not safe from the ignominy of recording the lowest-ever Premier League points total, having collected just nine points from 29 games.

However, Dibling has still managed to impress at times, chalking up four goals and two assists in all competitions, in what has been a real breakthrough season for the youngster.

The Exeter-born winger has also managed to impress when he hasn’t been on the scoresheet, being lauded as “exceptional” and a “joy to watch” by reporter Ryan Taylor, following an excellent showing against Manchester United back in September.

It would be a difficult task for any player to stand out in such a poor side, but some of Dibling’s performances this season indicate he deserves another chance in the Premier League next season, and it will be interesting to see how he fares in a better team.

Celtic transfer rumours heat up as Rodgers eyes another treble

Brendan Rodgers’ side are still on course to seal another domestic treble but could still be extremely busy in the summer transfer window.

Having already lifted the Scottish League Cup, Celtic lead the way in the Scottish Premiership and are set to take on St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup semi-finals next month.

Away from the pitch, the Hoops have already secured a pre-contract agreement for left-back Kieran Tierney to return to Parkhead from Arsenal when his Gunners contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

Celtic have also made an offer worth €2m (£1.6m) to sign Kalidou Sidibe from French side En Avant Guingamp, who is viewed as a replacement for loanee Jeffrey Schlupp.

Centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers could be on his way out of Celtic Park in the coming months amid rumours of a move to England, and there have been claims that Rodgers is speaking to former defender Kristoffer Ajer, who is still with Brentford, about a potential return to Glasgow.

It looks set to be a productive summer despite the club making 10 signings during the 2024/25 season, and a new target has now emerged for Celtic chiefs.

Celtic make contact for former Engels teammate Rexhbecaj

According to reports by Fussball Transfers, relayed by Sport Witness, Celtic are working on a deal to sign FC Augsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj.

It is claimed that the Hoops have made an approach to ask for information over a potential deal, as have Turkish side Besiktas and Italian outfit Parma.

Rexhbecaj is out of contract with Augsburg at the end of the 2025/26 season, with talks over an extension stalling recently.

The 27-year-old has been likened to Celtic star Engels, as per Football Transfers, and previously played with the current Hoops man at Augsburg. They turned out alongside each other in midfield on 38 occasions and played more than 2,000 minutes on the same pitch.

A Kosovo international, Rexhbecaj can play as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder, and was praised by former Wolfsburg coach Eric Schmidt, who once said: “He is an incredibly powerful, aggressive and strong player. He is quite complete and can play several positions.”

A move to Celtic for Rexhbecaj, by the looks of things, a deal will be one to watch over the coming months.

Spurs already have a perfect Danso upgrade in 18-year-old "freak talent"

We are just over a month out from the end of the winter transfer window, and while Tottenham Hotspur made what looked like some brilliant signings at the time, it would be fair to say the jury is still out for all three additions.

Antonín Kinský, for example, wowed fans and pundits alike on his debut against Liverpool, but in the weeks that followed, mistakes started to creep in, and by the time Guglielmo Vicario was fit again, there was no doubt over who should be number one.

Likewise, there was plenty of hype and excitement when the club announced the signing of Mathys Tel, but since then, the Frenchman has scored a single consolation goal in six appearances and is struggling to make a case for his inclusion from the get-go.

Finally, Kevin Danso joined the club to help cover for the defensive injury crisis, and while he put in some solid early performances, it would be fair to say he has started to receive some valid criticism in recent games, which could spell trouble as the club might already have a player ready to take his place next season.

Danso's middling Spurs form

So, before the pitchforks come out, it should be said that we are relatively early on in Danso’s Spurs career, and with just over two months of the season to go, he could establish himself as an undroppable star.

However, as things stand, it would be hard to say he’s been anything more than useful for the Lilyhwhites so far.

For example, while he looked good in some of his early games, like away to Liverpool and at home to Manchester United, performances the Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick awarded him 7/10 and 8/10 match ratings for, respectively, he has struggled of late.

On Thursday night, for example, the Austrian international, like many of his teammates, looked out of his depth and, as Kilpatrick argued, looked ‘erratic’ at the back, which was enough to warrant a 5/10 match rating.

Then, at the weekend, while he was nowhere near Spurs’ worst player, he got his movement wrong and jumped too early for Bournemouth’s opener, and generally looked a little lost at times, losing the ball eight times and giving away two fouls.

In all, it’s far too early to brand Danso a flop, but should he want to cement himself as a regular starter or one of the first names off the bench, he’ll need to do more over the coming weeks, especially as the club already have a tremendously exciting youngster who could replace him next season.

The Spurs gem who could replace Danso

So, while Spurs have several incredibly exciting youngsters in and around the team already, the majority, such as Mikey Moore and Lucas Bergvall, play across the forward line or in midfield.

However, in Luka Vušković, the North Londoners look like they could have a defensive superstar in the making.

The Lilywhites signed the Croatian wonderkid in September 2023, but as he was 16 then, post-Brexit rules around registering foreign players under 18 mean he cannot officially join the team until this summer.

So, after spending the latter half of the 23/24 campaign in Poland, the “freak talent,” as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, moved to Belgian side KVC Westerloo at the start of this season, where he has excelled.

For example, despite playing exclusively at centre-back, the 18-year-old monster has scored seven goals and provided two assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every three games.

On top of that, the 6 foot 5 titan is also a brick wall at the back.

According to FOTmob, he wins 76.2% of his tackles, 66% of his duels, 72.2% of his aerial duels and makes 5.74 recoveries, all per 90.

For context, William Saliba has won 60.4% of his tackles, 63.2% of his duels, 60% of his aerial duels and makes 4.51 recoveries, also all per 90.

Arsenal's WilliamSalibaapplauds fans after the match

So, on top of being a serious goal threat from the back, the young Croatian also shares some statistical similarities with one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs.

Ultimately, Danso looks like he could be a useful player for Spurs, but he’s not cemented himself in the squad just yet, and if he’s not careful, he could be replaced by Vušković next season.

Celtic must rue selling "unplayable" star who's outscored Idah for 6 years

Celtic were dealt a fairly significant blow in the recent January transfer window when star striker Kyogo Furuhashi decided to move on from Parkhead to sign for Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The French outfit reportedly agreed a fee of £10m to sign the Japan international, and that put an end to his three-and-a-half-year stay in Glasgow, having joined from Vissel Kobe in the summer of 2021.

Kyogo racked up an impressive tally of 85 goals in 165 competitive matches for the Scottish giants during his time at Paradise, including 34 goals in the 2022/23 campaign.

The 30-year-old marksman had scored 12 goals and provided four assists in all competitions in the current term for Celtic, which shows that he was still in top form by the end of his career at the club.

Instead of signing a replacement to compete for a place in the team at the top end of the pitch, Brendan Rodgers has trusted Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah to handle the responsibility of being the sole number nine in his system.

It has not been an easy season, however, for the Ireland international since he was brought back to the club on a permanent deal from Norwich City last summer.

Adam Idah's form for Celtic this season

The Hoops reportedly splashed out an initial fee of £8.5m to sign the 6 foot 3 marksman from the Canaries on a permanent basis, after his return of nine goals and two assists in 19 matches on loan in the second half of the 2023/24 campaign.

Idah has the chance to settle down and forge a long-term career for himself at Parkhead, but he has not had the easiest of starts to his journey to becoming the first-choice striker for the club.

The 24-year-old number nine has only scored 13 goals in 41 matches in all competitions, which is a solid but unspectacular return, and he has failed to nail down a place as a regular starter.

Idah has not been reliable enough in the Scottish Premiership for Rodgers to count on him to start week-in-week-out to lead the line for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, the Irish attacker has been wasteful in front of goals with the high-quality chances that have come his way, missing 13 ‘big chances’ in 15 starts.

There have been plenty of promising moments for the £8.5m-rated star, however, including his quickfire brace against Aston Villa in the Champions League.

It is down to Idah to finally take the next step in his career and become a consistent goalscorer at first-team level, as it is something that he has struggled with.

Norwich forward Adam Idah.

Since making his debut for Norwich in 2019, the Ireland international has scored 39 goals in 176 senior games for the Canaries and Celtic combined.

In that same time, Idah has been vastly outscored by a former Hoops striker who failed to make the grade at Parkhead – Finland international Teemu Pukki.

Teemu Pukki's struggles with Celtic

Back in the summer of 2013, Celtic reportedly splashed out a fee of £3m to sign the Finnish marksman from German side FC Schalke, as they looked to replace Gary Hooper, who had signed for – funnily enough – Norwich that summer.

Hooper had just come off the back of a return of 31 goals and ten assists in 51 appearances in all competitions during the 2012/13 campaign, which shows that Pukki had big boots to fill.

Unfortunately, the £3m-rated attacker, aged 23 at the time, failed to establish himself as a regular goalscorer for the Premiership giants, with just seven goals in 26 league matches for the Bhoys.

Pukki did manage two goals and one assist in four Champions League qualifiers at the start of the following season, but that did not stop the Hoops from sending him out on loan to Brondby, a deal that was made permanent at the end of the 2014/15 campaign.

After a return of 72 goals in 164 appearances for the Danish side, the Finland international signed for Norwich on a free transfer in the summer of 2018, and the rest – they say – is history.

Why Celtic must regret selling Teemu Pukki

Pukki hit the ground running with a sensational haul of 29 goals and 10 assists in 43 matches in the Championship in his debut season with the Canaries to lead them to promotion to the Premier League.

Where Are They Now

Idah was promoted to the first-team in the 2019/20 campaign and had to watch on from the bench as the Finnish star proved himself to be a fine option in the top-flight of English football, scoring 11 times in 36 matches despite their relegation.

As you can see in the table above, Pukki provided a consistent presence in the final third for Norwich throughout his time at Carrow Road, as he never missed more ‘big chances’ than he managed goals scored in a single league campaign – in the Championship or the Premier League.

The impressive marksman scored 88 goals in 210 matches for the Yellows in all competitions, and 58 of those goals came from the 2019/20 campaign onwards – after Idah’s senior bow.

This means that Pukki has outscored the Irishman since 2019 without even taking his goals for Minnesota United FC or HJK Helsinki in recent years into account.

For what it is worth, the 34-year-old ace, who was once described as “unplayable” by Daniel Farke, scored 14 goals in 43 games for the MLS side and has scored twice in three matches for Helsinki – his current club – so far.

Former Norwich striker Teemu Pukki.

These statistics suggest that Celtic made a mistake when they decided to loan him out, and subsequently cash in on him, after just one full season at Parkhead.

The Hoops did not give him the time he needed to fulfill his potential and his form for Norwich, at Premier League and Championship level, which is why they must regret not being more patient with him as they missed out on a terrific, clinical, centre-forward.

With this in mind, Rodgers and Celtic must remain patient with Pukki’s former protégé, Idah, as he is still young and may need a bit of time to find his feet and emerge as a consistent performer in front of goal.

Sold for £2.5m, now worth 300% more: Celtic may rue selling Engels upgrade

Celtic supporters are still licking their wounds after a rare, shock defeat but fear not, for Brendan Rodgers’ side still virtually have two hands wrapped around the Premiership title.

On Saturday lunchtime, the Hoops were beaten 2-1 by Hibernian at Easter Road, a goal down inside two minutes, unable to fight back.

The match was not without its controversy, given that Daizen Maeda had a late equaliser disallowed by VAR, who adjudged that the ball had gone out of play, even though all the replays are, at best, inconclusive.

This Celtic side is certainly strong, but how good would they be had they not let a player go, who’s now being touted as one of the best in the Premier League south of the border?

He’s remarkably now better than the club’s record-signing too..

Arne Engles' debut Celtic season in numbers

Back on deadline day in August, Celtic signed midfielder Arne Engels from Augsburg for a reported £11m, breaking their club-record transfer fee in the process, with the Belgian recruited to be Matt O’Riley’s replacement.

The price tag meant ‘an extra layer of expectation rests on the midfielder’s shoulders’, as outlined by Joe Donnelly of the Glasgow Times, leading to Engels making a mixed start to life in hoops.

However, more recently, former Scotland forward James McFadden labelled him “a class act”, with Graeme McGarry of the Herald exclaiming that Engels had a ‘coming of age’ performance in the Champions League against Bayern Munich.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout adds he “could easily play for a strong club in the top five leagues”, with Engels taking his tally to nine goals and ten assists for the season, thanks to a brace against Dundee earlier this month.

So, the Belgian has certainly started to impress, but is a former Celtic midfielder, now plying his trade in the Premier League, out-shining him?

Former Celtic midfielder starring in the Premier League

A certain Ryan Christie joined Celtic for a reported fee of £500,000 in September 2015, and this certainly proved money well spent, considering he scored 42 goals and provided 44 assists in 151 appearances for the club, winning seven major honours.

He then departed for £2.5m to join Bournemouth, then of the EFL Championship, in the summer of 2021, now earning rave reviews for his performances in the Premier League, currently valued at £10m via Transfermarkt.

Ed Elliot of the Independent labels him one of the ‘stars’ of this high-flying Bournemouth team, while Sky Sports Dave Jones believes he is now one of the most ‘unheralded’ players in the Premier League.

Gregor Robertson of the Times believes him to be the Premier League’s ‘best ball-winner’ and that’s certainly proven by the numbers.

The final row of this table is the most-telling, given that Christie’s 155 ball recoveries are the joint-most in the Premier League, alongside Moisés Caicedo, who cost Chelsea a record-breaking £115m, while the Ecuadorian has played 374 more minutes than the Scot.

Alex Keble of the Premier League believes Christie is Bournemouth’s ‘most important player’, with Andoni Iraola having transformed him into a more defensive midfielder.

Arne Engels is much more of a creative, attacking midfielder, akin to how Christie was at Celtic, but the now 30-year-old is, possibly, even better than any Celts supporter may have thought he would ever become.
