Contact made: Wolves make first move to sign 26 y/o ahead of Aston Villa

Wolves have made their first move to sign a new player ahead of a number of Premier League rivals, according to a new report.

Wolves planning for summer transfer window

Those at Molineux and Gary O‘Neil may well be looking ahead to the 2024/25 season, with the club’s push for European football this season now faltering.

Tuesday evening’s 1-1 draw with relegation-threatened Burnley has seen Wolves drop points in three of their last four fixtures, with a potential battle now on for a top-half finish.

O’Neil once again vented his frustrations at the club’s business in the January transfer window following the point at Turf Moor.

There have been transfer targets mentioned ahead of the summer, especially in attack. Wolves are expected to sign teenage forward Stephano Carrillo from Mexican side Santos Laguna and they are also readying an offer to sign Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal ahead of Brentford and Crystal Palace.

The Old Gold are also in pole position to sign Southampton striker Che Adams, but there could also be additions at the back going off a new update.

Wolves make contact to sign new goalkeeper

According to reports in Spain in the last 48 hours, relayed by Sport Witness, Wolves have made contact to sign UD Las Palmas goalkeeper Alvaro Valles.

The 26-year-old has been linked with rivals Aston Villa, as well as Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, but it is Wolves who have made first contacts over a potential deal.

Valles, who was previously on the books with Real Betis, has been with Las Palmas since 2018 and has been a regular in recent years.

In fact, the shot-stopper helped Las Palmas win promotion to La Liga with 19 clean sheets in 34 appearances, and he has also impressed in the Spanish top flight.

For example, his Transfermarkt valuation stood at just €1m less than 12 months ago, but that figure has now rocketed to a career-high €15m. Valles also recently spoke about the possibility of being called up by Spain ahead of Euro 2024 following his eye-catching displays.

“I’m not aware of anything. I’m focused on the collective success of the team. We all want to finish as high as possible in the standings, to make history. Individual awards, if they come, are welcome. But the main thing for me is the collective. Praise can be debilitating, that’s why I always keep my feet on the ground.”

A move to Molineux this summer looks like it could be one to watch, with Valles potentially the long-term successor to Jose Sa.

Eoin Morgan says England players are 'open to helping in whatever way possible'

The ECB had said on Tuesday that it was not looking at pay cuts for centrally contracted players

George Dobell01-Apr-2020Eoin Morgan has insisted England players are “open to helping in whatever way possible” as the game struggles to come to terms with the challenge posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.Morgan, the captain of England’s limited-overs teams, said he was “open to absolutely everything” that might be required to help the game through a crisis that Tom Harrison, the ECB’s chief executive, has warned could cost up to £300m if the entire season is abandoned. And that help, Morgan said, could include a temporary pay cut. While such a cut has not been forthcoming as yet – Harrison sent an email to the PCA (the players’ union) requesting a voluntary cut on Sunday but revealed on Tuesday that the ECB were no longer seeking such a scenario – Morgan suggested conversations were ongoing.ALSO READ: PCA stall on ECB request for players’ 20% pay cut”I’m extremely willing to help where I know it will make a difference,” Morgan said. “So in the extremely uncertain times where no-one seems to have any answers on the actual impact it will have on international cricket or county cricket, I’m open to absolutely everything.””As players we are open to helping in whatever way possible. We want to hopefully make an impact. The difficult thing at the moment is to work out what the best way to help out as players is.”Is it by social media? Is it to engage in other streams, sit back and let this pass and then hopefully play? They are answers we don’t have and can’t have at the moment.”However, I think in the coming weeks when things become clearer, we can start putting in a strategy to implement. Getting back on the field seems quite a while away.”The PCA said in a statement on Wednesday that England’s centrally contracted players, through the Team England Player Partnerships, “will continue to be in regular communication with the ECB”.”They will be discussing all aspects of the game that the ECB and the players are currently facing and most importantly how the players can best support their employers, the game and the country in the short, medium and long term.”The ECB also confirmed measures to reduce staff wages, with all employees taking a temporary pay cut for at least two months. It is expected that the umpires and Cricket Liaison Officers (CLOs) employed by the ECB – there are around 30 in total – will be among those who have been furloughed, with their wages topped up by the ECB to ensure they receive 100% of their reduced salary.Meanwhile, Jos Buttler has taken things into his own hands. His offer to sell the shirt he wore in the World Cup final has, at the time of writing, attracted bids in excess of £65,000 with more than six days of the auction remaining. The money will be donated to the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals charity. Morgan was full of praise for Buttler’s generosity.AP Photo/Themba Hadebe”It’s an incredibly kind gesture,” he said. “We’ve seen people donate during the Australian bush fires; we saw Shane Warne auction his Baggy Green cap for a million dollars or something absolutely ridiculous.”The impact that can have on many lives as opposed to sitting in someone’s drawer as a bit of a trophy… personally it’s something I don’t understand.”People have come out and said they would never do it. Justin Langer said he could never see a situation where he would do something like that but I find that hard to believe.”Ultimately, when we find ourselves in such a crisis, things like that have absolutely no relevance to what is going on in the outside world. His shirt will go for a lot of money and it should do. But the gesture itself, to help buy new equipment, is absolutely outstanding.Morgan also confirmed that even if the T20 World Cup is delayed, he intends to play in it. Morgan had considered retirement after England’s 50-over World Cup win in 2019 and had previously committed himself only until the end of the next T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to start in Australia in October.”I’m looking to play both the next two T20 World Cups,” he said. The tournament is scheduled to be played in India in October and November 2021.

Diana Baig, Javeria Khan star as Pakistan beat West Indies to blow Group B wide open

Sloppy performance by the West Indians on the field makes Pakistan’s job easier

The Report by Sruthi Ravindranath26-Feb-2020Pakistan opened their T20 World Cup campaign with a comprehensive win against a sloppy West Indies at Manuka Oval in Canberra, only their second win over the opponents in the format. Diana Baig and Nida Dar did the job first up, rattling the West Indies’ line-up to restrict them to 124 for 7. It was then chased down with ten balls to spare as Javeria Khan and Bismah Maroof hits 30s.Pakistan got off to a flying start in their chase with Javeria and Muneeba Ali knocking off nearly half the runs within the first eight overs. But a couple of quick wickets and a slowdown in the middle made it seem like we were in for a close finish, but captain Bismah and Nida, with the help of some poor West Indies fielding, took Pakistan over the line with enough to spare. The win also means that four out of the five teams in Group B are now tied at two points with one win each.Slow and steady wins the day for Pakistan
Openers Javeria Khan and Muneeba Ali made 48 in the powerplay, scoring at eight an over at that stage, and it looked like it would be a quick and easy finish. Stafanie Taylor introduced herself in the eighth over and immediately made an impact, striking Javeria, who was attempting a sweep, on the pads. The wicket led to Pakistan slowing down a bit, with Bismah and Muneeba avoiding any risky shots and taking to a more cautious approach, but not quite hitting the panic button.Muneeba’s wicket saw Nida joining Bismah at the crease, and the two seamlessly rotated the strike from then on, finding boundaries occasionally as they kept a watch on the asking rate. From needing a run a ball at the end of 14 overs, they brought down the equation to six runs needed off three overs, bringing West Indies’ hopes to a halt. The 18th over, which saw a dropped catch off Nida at the boundary and a missed run-out chance, further underscored West Indies’ woeful day on the field. Bismah ensured the opponents did not get any more of those chances, hitting a boundary in the second ball of the 19th over and sealing it for Pakistan.Shakera Selman reacts on the field•Getty ImagesDiana, Nida keep West Indies quiet
It was a start to forget for West Indies after they opted to bat first. Hayley Matthews was given lbw first ball and didn’t review before the DRS timer expired, and it was later confirmed that the ball indeed was pitching outside leg. Her opening partner, Lee Ann Kirby was able to find the gaps a few times in the next three overs but then hit one straight to cover point in the first ball of the fourth over to give Diana her second wicket. Their powerplay score read 28 for 2, and Deandra Dottin’s entry would not turn it much for them as she departing for 1 after giving away a simple catch off Nida to Iram Javed at long-on.It was captain Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle who ensured West Indies avoided a below-par total, but the rest of the line-up collapsed around them to a disciplined Pakistan bowling performance. But Pakistan, too, had a few lapses in the field – Aiman Anwer dropped Kirby and a missed run-out chance let Taylor off when she was on 23.Taylor, Campbelle the only bright spots
With little to no help from the rest of the batters, Taylor and Campbelle took on the task of putting up a decent total on board after a dim start. The two were cautious most of the time in the middle, even avoiding using their feet against Bismah’s slow-tossed legbreaks. The first big hit of the match came in the 15th over with Campbelle charged down the track to hit Nida over midwicket, and she would go on to hit another six and a four in the next over off Diana. But in the next over, she fell for a 36-ball 43, lbw to Anam Amin trying a reverse sweep. Taylor smote two sixes in the next few overs before holing out on a 47-ball 43. They were the only bright spots on the day when everything seemed to be going wrong for West Indies.

Rubel Hossain, Rayad Emrit keep Chattogram in finals contention

Chattogram Challengers ensured themselves a second crack at the BPL final by beating Dhaka Platoon in the Eliminator match

Mohammad Isam13-Jan-2020Chattogram Challengers ensured themselves a second crack at the BPL final, after they beat Dhaka Platoon by seven wickets, in the Eliminator match. Rayad Emrit, Rubel Hossain and Nasum Ahmed set up their win, picking up seven wickets in the first 12.4 overs, before Imrul Kayes and Mahmudullah completed the chase with 14 balls to spare.Chris Gayle played the anchor role for a change as Ziaur Rahman and Kayes hit five sixes and four boundaries between them, to power Chattogram to 91 in the first 12.3 overs, before Mahmudullah hammered four sixes in his unbeaten 34 off just 14 balls to complete the chase. But Chattogram would have to thank their bowlers for restricting Dhaka to a middling 144 for 8 in 20 overs, which ultimately gave them the easy chase.Rubel v TamimDhaka fell into early trouble when Rubel pinned Tamim Iqbal to the crease in the first over of the match. After surviving a caught-behind shout off the first ball, Rubel delivered a superb yorker as well nearly trapping the left-hander lbw. Rubel would have to wait until the following over to get his man as Tamim fell for 3 off 10 balls.Emrit’s two-wicket overWith Dhaka in early strife, Chattogram sensed the chance to take control of proceedings. Emrit, a BPL regular despite a lack of noteworthy performances, struck twice in his second over. First he removed the dangerous Mahedi Hasan, and followed it up with the dismissal of Jaker Ali next ball, caught behind for a duck. To top off a fine bowling performance, Emrit removed Mominul Haque to reduce Dhaka to 52 for 6 in the 11th over, before finishing with superb figures of 3 for 23 off his four overs.Shadab Khan continues to add to his credentials as an allrounder•BCBShadab’s late chargeDhaka have been sending Shadab up the order in many of the matches but it was only in this game when the Pakistan allrounder gave them a batting boost. When his compatriot Asif Ali fell in the 13th over, Dhaka were 60 for 7, but Shadab picked things up with a 41-ball unbeaten 64. He struck five fours and three sixes, most of them coming in the last three overs in which Dhaka took 51 runs.Shadab’s contribution, much of which came in the two 40-odd stands he had with Thisara Perera and Mashrafe Mortaza, gave Dhaka some breathing space with a 144-run total.Kayes faster than GayleIt was a remarkable sight: Kayes dominating a 49-run stand with Gayle. But by the time he fell to Shadab in the 13th over, Chattogram had set themselves a good platform in the chase. Kayes made 32 of the 49 runs, having struck three sixes and a four in his 22-ball knock. Gayle only contributed 13 runs to the partnership, before falling for 38 off 49 balls in an innings that wasn’t very Gayle-esque.Mashrafe’s one-handed catchFielding at short fine-leg, Dhaka captain Mashrafe must have hoped that none of Gayle’s swipes or sweeps come his way. Mashrafe had injured his left hand in Dhaka’s previous game, requiring 14 stitches. He had faced two deliveries during his 40-run unbroken ninth wicket stand with Shadab, and had bowled four overs. But for any cricketer with a hand injury, fielding must be the most traumatic experience. Mashrafe was at least lucky that the Gayle catch was off a top-edge, and struck quite tamely. He put out his right hand, and took it one-handed, much to the crowd’s delight. It was all too late though as his opposite number Mahmudullah took care of the business of chasing down the moderate total.

'Really poor' DRS use cost Australia at Headingley – Justin Langer

Both Tim Paine and the Australia coach felt umpire Joel Wilson shouldn’t be blamed for the Ben Stokes not-out call and that the team should get better with their reviews

Daniel Brettig at Headingley26-Aug-2019Justin Langer and Tim Paine conceded that poor use of the DRS had returned to haunt Australia in the nerve-shredding final moments of the Headingley Test, which left the tourists without a review to call upon for a final lbw decision by the umpire Joel Wilson on Ben Stokes that would have been overturned on review.ALSO READ: Brettig – Mistakes haunt Australia as Headingley hoodoo strikes againEngland still needed two runs for victory when Nathan Lyon beat Stokes on the sweep and appealed fervently for lbw, only to have Wilson rule it not out. Stokes later said he could not believe ball-tracking had showed the delivery to be hitting the stumps squarely enough to overturn the not-out decision, but for Langer, the sequence underlined one of the areas his team needed improvement in.Two earlier wasted reviews, one for a Lyon lbw appeal on the third evening and then another for Pat Cummins against the last man Jack Leach with England still needing five runs to win, had meant there were none available at the critical moment. Plenty of criticism has been directed Wilson’s way for not giving Stokes out, but Langer reasoned that Australia could have put themselves into a position where recourse was available with better judgment.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“We’ve been really poor at it this whole series,” Langer said. “We talked a lot about getting better at our reviews. There wasn’t so many this game as there were at Lord’s, but certainly we have control of that. We have your way we go about it, but sometimes you don’t quite get it right. To be fair, the one off Pat Cummins, it was getting pretty desperate at the end there and that often happens. That’s just how it works out.”The umpire should make the decision he thinks is right regardless of reviews in my opinion. If they think it’s out they should give it, if they don’t they should give it not out. The review system is as it is and sometimes they go your way, sometimes they don’t.”Paine, who quipped that he might consider handing over reviewing duties to someone else, said that he had not watched a replay of the final lbw call, nor would he. “No. I saw it live,” he said. “That’s all I needed to see. I don’t want to watch that again.”Nevertheless, he declined to criticise Wilson, who had faced severe criticism for a string of overturned decisions during the first Test of the series at Edgbaston, served as third umpire at Lord’s and then returned to the middle for Headingley, where he had actually officiated far better across the game up until the concluding moments. There had been room for doubt, too, in the lbw appeal, given how full the ball had pitched, leaving Wilson with little chance to judge how much Lyon’s quicker delivery was turning.”I have no issue with that, we can’t control that,” Paine said. “I don’t think I’ve got a referral correct the whole series so I can’t sit here and bag the umpires and again we have got to focus on what we can control and umpiring decisions isn’t one of them.”I’m sure it is something that will be written about but we also had other opportunities to win the game and opportunities on other days with our batting and we didn’t take them, so to sit down and single out an umpire is unnecessary. He is no different to everyone else – he is allowed to make mistakes.”

Manchester United: Sky Sports drop Frenkie de Jong update

Manchester United are trying everything they can to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The Lowdown: De Jong linked with United

The 24-year-old Netherlands international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent weeks, in what would be a reunion with Erik ten Hag for the former Ajax midfielder.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-2/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that contact has been made between United and Barcelona regarding De Jong. Reports elsewhere have suggested that the Spanish giants would want a fee in the region of £85m, with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain also name-checked with an interest.

The Latest: Plettenberg’s update on De Jong

Sky Sports reporter Plettenberg took to Twitter on Monday evening to provide an update on United’s pursuit of De Jong after receiving information from ‘close sources’.

He claimed that Ten Hag ‘wants’ the midfielder and that the Red Devils are ‘trying everything’ in regards to a move. Talks have taken place and United are ‘verifying the financial package’, although Barcelona manager Xavi doesn’t want to lose the 25-year-old.

The Verdict: Promising signs

Romano previously stated that Barcelona’s financial situation may have an impact on the midfielder’s future. Therefore, United appear to be well placed when it comes to a possible move for De Jong after already holding talks and doing everything they can to get a transfer in place.

The Red Devils won’t be able to offer Champions League football next season whereas Manchester City and PSG can, but they may still have a few factors in their favour.

The pull of working under Ten Hag once again, the prospect of regular game-time with Paul Pogba seemingly on the way out and being a key figure in an Old Trafford rebuild could be enough to persuade De Jong to move to the red side of Manchester.

George Munsey's bread-and-butter shot continues to cause chaos in Dubai

The reverse sweep is the foundation of the left-hand batsman’s strokeplay

Peter Della Penna in Dubai30-Oct-2019The premise of scoring runs in cricket is simple: hit the ball where the fielders are not placed. When there is nobody behind square on the off-side boundary to a spin bowler, the reverse sweep is a very high-percentage one.It can hardly even be called a gamble anymore for George Munsey. It is the foundation of the left-hand batsman’s strokeplay – he won’t hesitate to play it from the very first ball of the match – and it’s one which few teams have found an answer for in the men’s T20 World Cup qualifier. The UAE bowlers were the latest to be reverse swept away on Wednesday afternoon as Munsey used the stroke to eliminate the hosts from the qualifiers and punch Scotland’s fourth trip to the event.”George is obviously a very talented player,” Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer said of his star of the match in the post-match press conference. “He can hit a golf ball a mile, he can hit a cricket ball a mile. He’s not very good at football, unfortunately. But he does have the ability to hit the balls 360 [degrees] on the cricket field. So he’ll use the reverse sweep when he needs to but he’s also capable of hitting the ball to the leg side if he needs to or back over the bowler’s head.

“He can probably understand that it’s a challenge for bowlers at times. George is in a great place at the moment with his cricket and he is playing extremely well. He’s going to go a very long way in his game. He keeps his head down and makes sure he gets his performances. We also have a number of guys who can play 360 but George is the one who is at the top of the game at the moment.”UAE captain Ahmed Raza said he was aware of the plan used in the previous match by Netherlands’ Pieter Seelaar to foil Munsey – putting a deep-backward point in place, which resulted in his dismissal on the second ball of spin he faced, from Colin Ackermann. Raza opted to have his bowlers bowl a cramped line to Munsey’s body, not allowing him to free his arms for the shot rather than put in funky fields.

“When someone’s hitting that [a reverse sweep] to a fast bowler who is bowling over 135 kph then you can be only in awe of that shot at that point.”UAE captain Ahmed Raza on Munsey

It almost worked in the first over bowled by left-arm spinner Sultan Ahmed with several mis-hits and one ball clanging off Munsey’s grill. But by the third over, Munsey had found his timing and sent Sultan twice over the backward-point boundary for sixes. Munsey showed he was equally adept at playing the shot against pace bowling too, audaciously reverse-sweeping Zahoor Khan over third man for six in the 13th over towards the tail-end of his knock.”We had set plans for that and we’ve played enough against him,” Raza said. “A few of my team-mates have played with him in the GT20 as well so we had our plans. If you look at the first over, he got one hit on the helmet, he got one inside-edge, he hit one over the keeper; so he got lucky with that as well.”The two boundaries he hit off Sultan in that [third] over, but he didn’t reverse sweep until the later stages. He hit one over third man but when someone’s hitting that to a fast bowler who is bowling over 135kph then you can be only in awe of that shot at that point.”Coetzer also credited Munsey for providing the scoring options for him at the other end. With the confusion the shot causes in terms of field settings and trying to cover up gaps, it has made for a fruitful partnership at the top of the order, one which may cause further mayhem 12 months on in Australia.”George has the ability to find the boundary, possibly easier than some others, during his innings,” Coetzer said. “It certainly helps me. We’ve got a pretty good record as an opening pair. He’s got skills which I wish I could have and he helps me along. The partnerships we put on often helps us put the foundation, where George tends to be the main guy causing the destruction.”
