'No fight, no plan': Bird and Bell sink New South Wales to innings defeat

Jackson Bird and Gabe Bell shared six wickets to dismantled New South Wales’ second innings and secure Tasmania a crushing innings and 58-run Sheffield Shield victory over Tasmania. In a match in which neither team was able to take all 10 wickets in the first innings, NSW collapsed on day four to be all out for 174 in 92 overs at Cricket Central in Sydney.Related

After falling to 143 for 9, NSW captain Jack Edwards (38 off 137 balls) dug in with No. 11 Liam Hatcher (8 not out off 79 balls) for 28 overs to frustrate the Tigers, before Riley Meredith took the final wicket, nipping one past Edward’s edge to take off stump, to finally sink the the home side.Tasmania became the first team to secure an outright win in a Shield game at Cricket Central, with the previous four matches at the venue ending in draws.Cruising at 102 for 2, NSW lost 8 for 41 in the next 25 overs to hand Tasmania their second win of the season. Patterson made 80 in his first innings, but could only manage 1 when batting again as Tasmania captain Jordan Silk pulled off a stunning catch in slips off Bird’s bowling. That made Bird the fourth-highest wicket-taker in Shield history with 421, only behind legendary legspinner Clarrie Grimmett (513) and Queensland pair Michael Kasprowicz (441) and Andy Bichel (430).After being dropped from Australia’s Test team following a difficult tour of the Caribbean, Konstas is yet to recapture his best since going back to domestic cricket this season. He will get another opportunity this weekend when he plays for the PM’s XI against the England Lions in Canberra.Patterson, who played the last of his two Tests in 2019, has experienced a mixed start to the season but scored a century against Queensland in November.Former NSW coach Phil Jaques was scathing in his assessment of the Blues’ last day collapse.”The second innings there’s been no fight, no plan and no effort,” Jaques said in commentary, before the recovery from Edwards and Hatcher. “That might sound harsh, but there’s got to be some application. There’s got to be some fight. It fell away badly in the field too.”Tasmania, who had been bottom of the table, took full advantage of a good batting wicket to belt their way to 623 for 8 dec declared as Nikhil Chaudhary, Tim Ward and Caleb Jewell all made centuries.

Rohit wary about rushing Bumrah back, hopeful fast bowler will play last two Australia Tests

The India captain also responds to rhetoric around his form after scoring his first ODI hundred in three years

Rohit on Bumrah: ‘We don’t want to take any risks with him’

Rohit Sharma has warned India against rushing Jasprit Bumrah back into action and hopes the fast bowler will recover sufficiently from injury to be available for the last two Tests against Australia in March.Bumrah was on his way back to the ODI side for the home series against Sri Lanka earlier this month, having recovered from the back injury he suffered prior to the 2022 T20 World Cup, when he sustained a new glute injury and was withdrawn from the squad. India’s team management is being particularly cautious about Bumrah’s fitness in the lead-up to the ODI World Cup in India in October-November later this year.Related

“About Bumrah, I’m not too sure at the moment, of course for the first two Test matches he’s not going to be available,” Rohit said after India swept New Zealand 3-0 in the ODI series. “I’m expecting that; not expecting but hoping he plays the next two Test matches but again we don’t want to take any risk with him. The back injuries are always critical. We have got lot of cricket coming up after that as well, we will see, and we will monitor. We are in constant touch with doctors and physios at NCA and we are constantly hearing from them.”Bumrah has been on the sidelines since September last year because of a stress reaction in his back and was rehabilitating at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. He had been advised rehab for a minimum of six weeks and was making gradual progress; he resumed training on November 25 and bowling on December 16 at the NCA. But the emergence of a new injury set him back further, putting him in doubt for Border-Gavaskar series as well.Rohit shrugs off rhetoric around recent ODI form Rohit has expressed his displeasure at the rhetoric around his recent form – or the lack thereof – in ODI cricket. In the third ODI against New Zealand in Indore, Rohit scored 101 off 85 balls, his first ODI hundred since January 2020, to set India up for a 3-0 series win. When asked about the three-year gap between ODI hundreds, Rohit explained that he had played fewer ODIs in the last three years, with T20 World Cups in 2021 and 2022 taking top priority during that period.

Replay of the third India vs New Zealand ODI is available on ESPN Player in the UK, and on ESPN+ in the USA in both English and Hindi.

“I have played only 12 ODIs in three years,” Rohit said. “Three years sounds a lot, but in that three years I have played only 12 or 13 [17] ODIs, if am not wrong. I know it was shown on the broadcast, sometimes we need to show the right things also. Last entire year we didn’t play ODI cricket, we were focussing on T20 cricket a lot. [We should pay attention to such things, the broadcaster, too, needs to check these things].”? [I don’t understand what you mean by my return]. You are saying three years, out of which eight months we all were completely home due to Covid-19. Where were the matches happening? And in the last year we have just played T20 cricket. In T20 cricket at the moment, other than Suryakumar Yadav anyone else is batting better; he has hit two [T20I] centuries, I don’t think anyone else has scored a century. In Test cricket, I have played just two matches against Sri Lanka. Otherwise, I was injured in between. Please check all that and after that you can ask me [about my form].”Rohit Sharma has been batting more aggressively in the powerplay•BCCI

While Rohit hasn’t been scoring big hundreds of late in ODI cricket, he has gone harder and faster in the powerplay, which has allowed his partners to ease themselves in. India’s head coach Rahul Dravid, who has tracked Rohit’s career from his Under-19 days, had praised about Rohit’s evolution as an ODI batter on the eve of the third ODI.”He has been a phenomenal cricketer, and I think he obviously started off as this really precocious talent,” Dravid said. “I remember seeing him for the first time when he was 17 or 18 – [he] just came out of Under-19s – and you could see that you’re looking at something slightly different here. And he has gone on to prove that. You look at a lot of kids who look different at 19 but not all of them go onto actually achieve their potential. What Rohit has done over the last 15 years I think now has actually changed his potential and he’s been a great servant for Indian cricket and has done really well.”Maybe, like you said, the turning point was when ten years ago he got the opportunity to finally open. And really his hallmark has obviously been his performances in ICC tournaments, like we said in 2019, but also his ability to score big runs when he gets going. Someone who has got three double-hundreds in this format is an absolutely phenomenal achievement.”

Alyssa Healy to miss England match with 'minor calf strain'

Tahlia McGrath will captain Australia in Alyssa Healy’s absence, while Georgia Voll is expected to open alongside Phoebe Litchfield

S Sudarshanan21-Oct-2025Australia captain Alyssa Healy will miss the upcoming women’s ODI World Cup match against England after suffering a “minor calf strain” during a training session on Saturday.Vice captain Tahlia McGrath will lead the side in her absence, while Beth Mooney will keep wicket. Healy will be monitored ahead of the final league game against South Africa on Saturday, Cricket Australia said in a statement on Tuesday.”Really unfortunate there for Midge [Healy] but we know we have got some options,” Australia head coach Shelley Nitschke said in Indore on Tuesday. “It’s twofold. Obviously, it’s a big loss for us. She’s our captain, she’s made back-to-back hundreds, she’s certainly in some form with the bat. We talk about our depth a bit and that’s going to be tested. It’s going to provide some opportunities for others to step up into some role, which we’ve got the ability to cover. Whilst it’s not ideal, that’s why you bring 15 players to be able to absorb when things like this arise.”Related

Nitschke said Georgia Voll was the “obvious choice” to replace Healy, but added that Australia were yet to take a final decision. On Monday, Voll had a long batting session at the Holkar Stadium and faced both pace and spin. Nitschke also gave her left-arm throwdowns from a low trajectory to emulate England’s left-arm spinner Linsey Smith, and Voll was seen training for the scoop against that kind of delivery.”Georgia Voll is here and has filled that role before,” Nitschke said. “We’ll sit down today and probably just make sure we’re getting our matchups right and come to a final decision, but she’s the obvious choice.”Voll made her ODI debut against India last year and scored a century in just her second game. She played the WPL for UP Warriorz as a replacement player and even scored an unbeaten 99 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Voll bagged a duck in her first international match on Indian soil – against India last month in New Chandigarh – but followed it up with a half-century.”Volly’s a pretty casual customer,” Nitschke said. “She seems to be able to take everything in her stride, and if we do go that way and select her, I’m sure that she’s going to be ready and up for the challenge. She has shown that she has certainly got what it takes to perform at this level, and doesn’t seem to get too overawed by an occasion. So if that’s the way we go, I’ve got full confidence that she’s going to be ready to step in.”Nitschke also threw her weight behind McGrath, who has had scores of 26, 5 and 12 in the World Cup so far. McGrath has led Australia only four times in ODIs before, and Wednesday’s game against Ashes rivals England will be her first at the ODI World Cup.”It works in her favour, she is a pretty cool customer, TMac,” Nitschke said. “She probably hasn’t had the [desired] output, but she had a really important partnership for us in the New Zealand game with Ash Gardner. She’s someone that certainly steps up when she’s leading the team. So, I’m looking forward to seeing her out there captaining us, and I know she’d do a fantastic job.”Alyssa Healy and Phoebe Litchfield put on an unbroken 202-run stand against Bangladesh•ICC/Getty Images

Healy came into the World Cup low on runs – she scored 27, 9 and 30 in the ODI series against India – and started the competition with 19 and 20 against New Zealand and Pakistan respectively. But she then hit 142 in 107 balls in a record run-chase against India and 113 not out in 77 balls in a ten-wicket win against Bangladesh.Australia, having won four out of their five matches so far, were the first team to qualify for the semi-finals and currently sit at the top of the points table. England and South Africa have also secured their spots, with one more berth still up for grabs. This latest injury is a setback for Healy, whose 2024 T20 World Cup campaign was also marred by injury. During that tournament, she was sidelined for Australia’s final group match against India and their semi-final loss to South Africa after injuring her plantar fascia. The injury also had a knock-on effect through the remainder of her 2024-25 season. Knee and foot issues kept her out of much of the WBBL, an ODI series against India, the T20I leg of the Ashes, and a T20I tour of New Zealand. After months of rehabilitation, Healy made her long-awaited return in August, playing six white-ball matches for Australia A against India A in Queensland before being named in the World Cup squad.

Ivan Toney 'wants' Tottenham move with England outcast tipped for Thomas Frank reunion following Saudi spell

Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney reportedly wants to join Tottenham as the England outcast is keen to reunite with Thomas Frank following their successful spell together at Brentford. The forward's transfer to the Saudi Pro League last year was one of the most talked-about deadline day moves of the 2024 summer window. His £40 million ($53m) switch from the Bees was heralded as a new beginning, but just over a year later, whispers of homecoming are beginning to circulate.

Toney's Premier League comeback dream

With Dominic Solanke still nursing a persistent ankle injury and Randal Kolo Muani now sidelined with a fractured jaw, Spurs are in desperate need of a reliable finisher. Meanwhile, Frank, who turned Toney into a prolific top-level striker at Brentford, is said to remain a huge admirer of his former No.9. The Dane’s faith in Toney transformed the forward from a Championship star into an England international.

However, Tottenham’s hopes of landing Toney in January could face a major hurdle, according to . Al-Ahli’s hierarchy are determined to keep hold of their star, especially after his electric start to the Saudi Pro League campaign. He has hit 11 goals in 15 appearances across all competitions this season, which highlights his growing influence in the dressing room. The financial challenge is also significant as Saudi tax laws will force Toney to sacrifice a sizeable chunk of his wages to move back to England.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWhy would Toney want Tottenham move?

David Bentley, who is remembered fondly by Tottenham fans for an incredible goal against Arsenal in 2008, believes a transfer to Spurs could be on the cards.

"He’ll want to go in at Tottenham," Bentley said on . "For him, to go [and] play at the stadium with Thomas Frank, that’s the perfect destination for him. If he wants to get into the England team, it’s not about money, it’s about playing to get into that World Cup squad. The perfect environment is Tottenham. Tottenham could do with him and England as well – if anything happens with [Harry] Kane, we’re struggling a little bit for centre forwards."

Bentley believes Toney would walk straight into the squad as he knows what it takes to succeed in the English top flight.

"He’s a great player," Bentley continued. "Scoring goals in the Premier League is not easy and the way he plays the game, scores goals… he’s got to go to Tottenham, hasn’t he? Under Thomas Frank, he had a great time with him at Brentford and I’m sure they’re talking. I’m sure that’ll be the No.1 destination for him to go in at. Tottenham are struggling with centre forwards at the minute, Solanke is out injured and Richarlison is not at the level he needs to be. He could be Tottenham’s new signing on loan in January."

England ambitions on the line

Toney’s motivation for a Premier League return goes beyond club football as the striker is desperate to earn his place in Thoas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. He made his debut in 2023, scored his first goal against Belgium in 2024, and was part of England’s Euro 2024 squad. During that tournament, he assisted Harry Kane’s extra-time winner against Slovakia in the last 16 and also calmly converted his penalty in the shootout win over Switzerland in the quarter-finals. But since moving to Saudi Arabia, Toney has slipped down the pecking order.

Despite his form abroad, England boss Thomas Tuchel has left him out of the last three national team camps. His limited playing time during earlier call-ups, including an 88th-minute cameo in a 3-1 friendly defeat to Senegal, hasn’t helped his case. That remains the only time he has put on a Three Lions shirt in 2025. Moreover, Toney's entourage believes that even if he returns to the Premier League, he will find it difficult to force his way into Tuchel's setup, given the competition for places, as revealed by

Tottenham aren’t the only club circling. Everton are reportedly monitoring the situation, while Manchester United have also been loosely linked with Toney.

Speaking on , reporter Ben Jacobs said: "As far as Premier League interest, I think we've heard links with Tottenham due to the Thomas Frank connection. I'm not aware of any Spurs approach at this stage, some have even said Manchester United, and again, I think Manchester United are banking on Benjamin Sesko and they've also got Matheus Cunha, who can play at No 9. But if Joshua Zirkzee left, you never know, another striker could come in at Old Trafford."

Italy make history by qualifying for 2026 T20 World Cup

Italy have secured qualification for the 2026 men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, despite losing to Netherlands at The Hague. Next year’s tournament will mark Italy’s first appearance at a cricket World Cup. Netherlands also qualified for the event after comfortably chasing 135.Scotland, who have featured in the last four editions of the T20 World Cup, were knocked out after suffering a last-ball defeat against Jersey earlier in the day. Despite pulling off a one-wicket heist, Jersey were also knocked out after Netherlands beat Italy. Both Italy and Jersey were level with five points, but Italy ended up progressing to the 2026 T20 World Cup, by virtue of a superior net run-rate.Italy only needed to avoid a heavy defeat, which they did by stretching Netherlands’ chase to 16.2 overs. They confirmed their place in next year’s T20 World Cup in the 15th over before Netherlands completed their job and joined Italy in the event. After having opted to bat, Italy lost both their openers, Justin Mosca and Emilio Gay, within three overs and when their captain Joe Burns (22) fell in the seventh over, they were 41 for 3. Wicketkeeper-batter Marcus Campopiano also fell cheaply, leaving Italy at 46 for 4 in the ninth over. Ben Manenti then rallied along with the lower order to help Italy post a relatively competitive 134 for 7. Left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe was the pick of the bowlers for Netherlands, returning 3 for 15 in four overs, including the key wicket of Burns.Manenti found support from No. 7 Grant Stewart (25 off 16) and No. 8 Anthony Mosca (13* off 14). Italy took 33 off the last three overs, including 15 off the penultimate over bowled by allrounder Bas de Leede.Netherlands celebrate their tournament win•International Cricket Council

Netherlands then dashed out of the blocks, hitting 66 for no loss in the powerplay in their chase. Max O’Dowd and Michael Levitt extended their opening stand to 71 before Crishan Kalugamage struck in the eighth over to dismiss Levitt for 34 off 25 balls, an innings which included five fours and a six. O’Dowd and captain Scott Edwards then put on an unbroken 64-run partnership for the second wicket to see Netherlands home.Kalugamage finished with figures of 1 for 25 in his four overs and though Harry Manenti didn’t strike on the day, he ended the Europe regional final as its top wicket-taker. He took eight wickets at an average of 9.62 and economy rate of 7.70 in three matches. As for Jersey, they sealed their first-ever win against Scotland, but their joy was short-lived with the result of the Italy-Netherlands fixture not going in their favour. In pursuit of 134, Jersey were cruising at 81 for 1 in the 12th over, but the wicket of Nick Greenwood triggered a collapse. Jersey lost 8 for 48 and were left needing five off four balls. Captain Charles Perchard and No. 11 Jake Dunford picked off 2,1,1,1 to keep Jersey in the race before Netherlands and Italy qualified at their expense.Fifteen teams have qualified for the men’s T20 World Cup 2026 so far. The East-Asia Pacific qualifier will see three more sides qualify from the competition while two further teams will make it through from the Africa qualifier.

MS Dhoni’s application to trademark the phrase ‘Captain Cool’ – a moniker long associated with him because of his calm on-field demeanour – has been officially accepted and published by the Trademark Registry of India. The trademark will be granted if no objection or opposition is raised by any third party within 120 days of its acceptance, which was on June 16, 2025. The trademark was filed under categories related to sports training, coaching, and the provision of sports training facilities and services.Dhoni had filed the application in June 2023. He was informed at the time by the registry that another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited, had already registered the trademark ‘Captain Cool’. In response, Dhoni filed a rectification petition for the cited mark, alleging that the company was attempting to exploit his brand and the popularity of the term.In his application, Dhoni stated: “This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual.” Dhoni’s application was accepted after at least four hearings.Dhoni was last seen in action during IPL 2025, where he took over the Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy midway through the season after Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered an injury. CSK endured a disappointing campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table for the first time in 16 seasons.Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. “It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world,” Dhoni said in a statement. “To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. Eddie Nketiah receives 'thank you messages' from Arsenal after downing title rivals Liverpool with Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace hero Eddie Nketiah received "thank you messages" from his former club Arsenal after he scored a last-gasp winner against the Gunners' title rivals Liverpool on Saturday. Wrexham's trophy dream lives on! Nathan Broadhead's super double sees Red Dragons into Carabao Cup round four as potential Premier League opponent awaits

Nathan Broadhead's super double propelled Wrexham into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at the expense of a toothless Reading. After a docile first-half, Phil Parkinson's men jumped to life after the break to score twice and progress in the competition where they might come up against an opponent from the Premier League.

    TELL ME MORE

Wrexham’s dream cup run, having already dumped out Championship sides Hull and Preston, faced another tough test, and the opening 45 minutes against Reading showed exactly why. Parkinson rolled out a 3-4-3 setup, with Elliot Lee and Broadhead buzzing around striker Sam Smith, but it was the Royals who set the early tempo.

The visitors looked sharp and aggressive from the off, moving the ball with real purpose. A crisp move ended with Scott Mahoney pulling the trigger from outside the box, only for his strike to whistle past the upright – a warning sign for the Dragons.

The home crowd finally found their voice when wing-back Ryan Barnett surged forward, his burst of pace raising hopes that Wrexham could turn the tide. Moments later, Smith tried to recreate the magic of his promotion-clinching strike at Charlton, but his miscued shot caused chaos instead. Reading’s keeper couldn't keep hold of the ball, leaving Callum Doyle with a sniff at goal, but his effort was bravely blocked. Just as Wrexham were building belief, Reading nearly delivered the hammer blow. Kamari Doyle, lively all evening, let fly from the edge of the area two minutes before the break. The ball cannoned off the post with Callum Burton stranded, leaving the Wrexham fans breathing a huge sigh of relief.

The Racecourse erupted in the 57th minute when Broadhead finally cracked Reading’s resistance. A clever short routine from Doyle freed Lee, whose shot was charged down, only for the rebound to drop kindly at Broadhead’s feet. The record signing made no mistake, smashing the ball home to give Wrexham the breakthrough their pressure deserved.

Far from settling for a slender lead, Parkinson’s men went hunting for the knockout punch. Thirteen minutes later, the insurance goal arrived in emphatic style. Barnett swung in a peach of a delivery, and Broadhead rose like a man possessed to bury a thunderous header. The ball rattled the underside of the bar, bounced on the line, and Smith made sure by prodding it in – but the referee confirmed it was Broadhead’s strike. The two goals from the new signing sealed the fate of the match and ensured that Wrexham progressed to the fourth round of the EFL Cup for the first time in 48 years.

    THE MVP

Wrexham smashed their transfer record to bring Broadhead in from Ipswich Town for a fee rising to £10 million ($13.5m), and this was the night he showed exactly why. Two goals, unrelenting movement, and the swagger of a man who knows the spotlight belongs to him. Quite simply, he dragged the Dragons into the next round.

  • THE BIG LOSER

Reading’s Mark O’Mahony, who is on loan from Premier League side Brighton, endured a night to forget. He chased shadows, rarely troubled the Wrexham backline, and squandered his best moment when he clipped the post.

Slot must sell Liverpool star earning more than Diaz & Jones combined

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk all have just one year left on their Liverpool contracts. Nat Phillips too, though this is likely of decidedly lesser importance to FSG and Michael Edwards.

It's clear that the Reds need to bolster Arne Slot's first team this summer but the first port of call must surely be to ensure the future of some of Anfield's most important members. Losing any of that holy trinity might be detrimental in the wake of Jurgen Klopp's departure.

Liverpool player Luis Diaz in action

But others may well find themselves headed for the exit, with Luis Diaz at the front of the pack in this regard, pursued by Barcelona and transfer-listed for €75m (£63m) resultingly.

Now, though, another star looks like he might be on the way out, with interest in the wantaway Joe Gomez growing.

The latest on Joe Gomez's Liverpool future

According to The Mirror, Bayern Munich are interested in signing Gomez as Vincent Kompany seeks to revamp his squad.

The report continues that the versatile Gomez is one of Liverpool's most valued players and that efforts will be made to rebuff any intrigue, though it has emerged in recent months that the 27-year-old is considering leaving Anfield this summer.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Gomez is under contract until 2027, so if the Bundesliga giants are serious in their interest, the defender will certainly not come cheap.

Why Liverpool should sell Joe Gomez

Gomez has completed 224 appearances, placing nine assists, since signing for Liverpool from Charlton Athletic for a fee of £3.5m in 2015. He's won it all on Merseyside but perhaps this is the right time to let him search for new pastures.

Liverpool are bordering on the thin side in defence but it has been made known that signing a centre-half will be among Edwards' priorities this summer. Moreover, Conor Bradley's emergence at right-back has eased the need for Gomez's covering role there and his makeshift left-back deployment has been commendable but does call for a more suitable long-term alternative to Andy Robertson.

£15k-per-week

The fact that Gomez earns more than Diaz and Curtis Jones combined is enough to suggest that something might need shuffling in the Anfield salary list.

Sure, Jones earns a 'pittance' of £15k'per-week, which is indeed paltry when running it alongside the earnings of his first-team peers, but for Gomez to also be taking home £30k more than Diaz each week highlights another element.

Liverpool player Luis Diaz

But perhaps most importantly, if reports are to be believed, the England international is seeking an exit from his long-time outfit.
