Sancho set to join Juventus on initial loanSerie A side will have obligation to buy wingerChelsea lose out after holding talksWHAT HAPPENED?

According to , Juventus have struck a deal for the 24-year-old, despite facing competition from Premier League giants Chelsea. After weeks of speculation linking Sancho to Turin on what was thought to be a straight loan, the deal is now said to include an obligation for the Serie A side to purchase the England international permanently next summer. The player is also said to be keen on the switch.

Chelsea's failure to land the former Borussia Dortmund man likely came down to their difficulty in moving on Raheem Sterling. Head coach Enzo Maresca informed the 29-year-old that he would not be involved with the first team this season and while talks had been held with Man Utd over a swap deal between the two wingers, it appears Juventus' quick work in sending Federico Chiesa to Liverpool has allowed them to snap up the unwanted Red Devil.

DID YOU KNOW?

Since joining the club in 2021, Sancho has made 83 appearances for Man Utd. In that time, he only managed to record 18 goal contributions, with his best return being six goals in the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.

Nearly a year after his feud with manager Erik ten Hag, Sancho's chapter at Old Trafford is finally set to end. The 23-cap international had been cast out by the Dutchman and sent away on loan to Germany for the 2023-24 season and will now get the chance to start a new chapter away from one of the world's most scrutinised clubs.

County staff face return to furlough from October

Staff at several first-class counties are expected to be put back on furlough at the end of this week.ESPNcricinfo understands that several of those counties not involved in the knock-out stages of the T20 Blast will put a proportion of their staff – including players – back on furlough in October. This could include the Essex and Somerset teams which have been contesting the Bob Willis Trophy final at Lord’s in recent days. The government’s furlough scheme was set up to counter the financial challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. It has seen the government take responsibility for paying employees, allowing businesses to survive without laying off staff. The scheme ends at the end of October. All but Lancashire and Surrey put their players on furlough at the start of the summer when it became apparent that the season would be delayed. While some counties topped up the government’s furlough amount – which was originally capped at around £2500 a month – others did not. Current legislation means the government will be expected to pay 70 percent of employees’ monthly salary up to a maximum of £2,187, with the employer required to top up another 10 percent.Other county employees, including groundstaff and administration teams, are also expected to be put back on furlough at several clubs.Teams involved in the knock-out stages of the T20 Blast will have to wait to make a claim. The quarter-finals are due to be played on October 1 with Finals Day on October 3.It is understood the players at counties due to be furloughed have not yet been notified of the intention.

England white-ball tour of India postponed until 2021

BCCI confirm delay to ODIs and T20Is to avoid clash with rescheduled IPL

George Dobell07-Aug-2020The BCCI has confirmed that England’s white-ball tour of India has been postponed until early 2021.England were due to arrive in India at the end of September for a tour involving three ODIs and three T20s. But with the IPL having been rescheduled to cover the same period, the tour has been put back a few months. It is now anticipated that the white-ball games will be played as part of England’s Test tour scheduled from late January to late March 2021. Five Tests are also scheduled to be played on that tour.Where those games will be played remains unclear. The IPL will be staged in the UAE due to the Covid-19 pandemic; it seems there is a good chance the England tour will follow suit. An ECB spokesperson suggested it was too early to “speculate” on such a scenario.”Now that we have clarity regarding the postponement of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, it enables us to work with other Boards to progress the vital task of optimising the international schedules in the challenging circumstances that we have all been having to address with the Covid-19 pandemic,” the ECB’s chief executive Officer, Tom Harrison, said.”International cricket between India and England is a highlight of the cricketing calendar and we look forward to working with the BCCI to firm-up the schedules for these eagerly anticipated tours as soon as possible.”Jay Shah, honorary secretary of the BCCI, said: “The BCCI and ECB are working closely to finalise the schedule as we move towards the resumption of cricket. The rescheduled tour is also being redesigned in a way to accommodate both red and white-ball format and will now be a comprehensive one.”

Aston Villa in talks to sign a dream Lenglet replacement

Aston Villa may be flying high in the Premier League and in Europe, but that has not stopped Unai Emery from thinking about the future.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

With a Champions League berth up for grabs in the coming weeks, the Spaniard is clearly thinking about bolstering his starting XI ahead of next season as he eyes up a move for a La Liga defender…

Aston Villa in the market for a defender

During the winter transfer window, Villa were showing plenty of interest in Atlético Madrid centre-back Mario Hermoso, who was coming to the end of his contract with the Spanish side.

Fast-forward a few months, however, and it appears as though Emery is serious about securing the defender ahead of 2024/25.

According to reports in Spain, via TEAMtalk, Villa have begun talks to sign Hermoso as they look to significantly bolster their first-team squad. It's stated the player's reps are directly trying to find him a new home from next term.

Securing his signature on a free transfer could be a wise investment by Emery, allowing him to divert funds into other areas of the team. Clement Lenglet will return to Barcelona once his season-long loan deal expires at the end of May and Hermoso could be an ideal replacement for the Frenchman.

Mario Hermoso’s statistics in 2023/24

Lenglet has played just 22 times for the Midlands side in all competitions this season, having to wait until December 22 to make his Premier League bow.

While he has been useful of late due to injuries to the likes of Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa, the defender will return to his parent club in the summer.

Aston Villa defender Pau Torres in Premier League action.

Hermoso, on the other hand, has been a regular for Atlético this season, making 36 appearances in all competitions, and has shown his class in La Liga.

Indeed, among his teammates, the 28-year-old currently ranks second for accurate passes per game (54.6) in the Spanish top flight along with ranking first for accurate long balls per game (4.5), fourth for clearances per game (2.9) and sixth for interceptions per game (one), evidently proving how important he is to the side.

The Spaniard was hailed as a “revelation” by football writer Zach Lowy just a few years ago and it is clear that Hermoso has the required attributes to be a success in the Premier League, as he aims to follow in the footsteps of his compatriot Torres.

The 5 foot 11 defender also impresses when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, ranking in the top 4% for progressive passes per 90 (6.16) and in the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.59), indicating that he would move the ball out from the defence with ease and is not fazed at taking on opposition players as he looks to transition the ball quickly during matches.

Clement Lenglet

These statistics suggest he would be an ideal replacement for Lenglet ahead of next season. If Villa go on to secure qualification for the Champions League, they will have a defender who has made 28 appearances in the competition, which could prove to be all the difference.

Mark Wood says Eoin Morgan's trust is key as Alex Hales waits on recall news

“Very hard” for players to back Hales return without captain’s support, says quick

Matt Roller28-May-2020

Mark Wood has said that England’s players will take their lead from white-ball captain Eoin Morgan and the team’s management regarding a possible international recall for Alex Hales.Hales has not played for England since March 2019, and was deselected on the eve of last year’s World Cup after it emerged he had failed a second recreational drugs test, but his hopes of a recall had been boosted in the past few weeks, after Morgan suggested the “door was still open” for him and Chris Woakes said that he believed that “people deserve a second chance”.England are expected to name an enlarged training group of up to 45 players on Friday, with Hales among a number of players facing a nervous wait to find out if he has been included. Morgan confirmed on Wednesday that he had spoken to Hales during lockdown, but poured cold water on the likelihood of an imminent return, reiterating that the batsman had shown “complete disregard” for the team’s values.ALSO READ: Morgan quashes Hales’ recall hopesSpeaking to Sky Sports, Wood said that it would be “very hard” for players to support a return for Hales if Morgan and the squad’s management did not, and questioned whether it would be fair for the batsman to force another player out of the squad.Asked if he would be happy to see Hales return, Wood said: “Yes and no, I guess – it’s a difficult one. If that trust isn’t there with the captain and the management, then I think it’s very hard for the rest of the players to jump on board with that.”I think once they’re comfortable with it and the trust is back… I think the players might be open to him coming back into the environment. I’m sure he would be treated exactly the same [as everyone else].”The only thing I think is difficult is that if a player has come in and earned their spot and done really well, do you just leave them out for Alex to come back in? Do they deserve their chance more than him? I don’t know: that’s one for the top brass to talk about. But I think he would be welcomed back if that trust was built back up from the people above.”Alex Hales has not played for England since his deselection from their World Cup squad•Getty Images

The ECB have stressed that the group of players named tomorrow will be a training party rather than an official squad, but it expected that around 12 batsmen – including wicketkeepers – will be added to the 18 bowlers who have already return to individual training, with the expectation that they will be able to begin training at some point next week.Around 15 further players will be named with a focus on white-ball cricket, who are expected to begin training in mid-June to build up slowly ahead of the three-match ODI series against Ireland, for which a late July start date has been pencilled in.ALSO READ: Ireland ‘itching’ to play England ODIs despite risks – StirlingThe red-ball bowling group, including Wood, returned to training last week on a strict individual basis, with their immediate focus on getting fit ahead of the proposed Test series against West Indies. The first Test is due to be start on July 8, with Cricket West Indies expected to give the series the green light at Thursday’s board meeting.Morgan hinted on Wednesday that the white-ball training group could include some relatively new faces, as England look to give players opportunities. That may mean chances in the Ireland series for younger players like Tom Banton, Phil Salt and Pat Brown, while Sam Billings, Liam Plunkett and David Willey will discover if they have been handed recalls. Ben Foakes, Dan Lawrence and Keaton Jennings are among the players on the fringes of the Test squad who will hope to be included.”We’ve openly said even before the outbreak of the pandemic that we would use ODIs primarily to try and grow our squad of 15 players,” Morgan said. “I think when it comes closer to the T20 games that are scheduled at the moment in September [against Australia], we will try and get as many players as we can close to our strongest team, provided the [T20] World Cup is still in the same place.”If it’s not, I think we could still look to expand on that squad of players. I think we can grow the white-ball squad and the Test side can still perform.”Wood added that he would prefer to focus on Tests rather than limited-overs cricket this summer, saying he “would love to keep my spot” after a man-of-the-match performance in England’s most recent outing in South Africa. He also suggested Jamie Porter and Brydon Carse as possible inclusions in Friday’s long-list, describing the latter – his Durham team-mate – as “someone that can bowl good licks”.

Liverpool favourites to sign “outstanding” £30,000-a-week player for free

da bet vitoria: As FSG look to set to map out what the post-Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool will look like, the Reds have now pulled ahead in the race to sign a popular free agent.

Liverpool set for huge summer rebuild

da realsbet: Whilst securing Klopp's successor in the dugout is the most pressing matter for the summer, FSG have a number of matters to address both on and off the pitch.

The Reds' hunt for a new coach has seen the Premier League side show a strong interest in ex-player Xabi Alonso, however nothing concrete has been agreed so far. Meanwhile, the search for an individual to head up the football operations has come to an end with Michael Edwards agreeing a deal to return to Anfield.

Liverpool man holding meetings to pick next club after exit decision made

He is planning to use the two-week international break to weigh up his options.

As the backroom of this new-look Liverpool begins to take shape, attention has also turned to the playing squad with the Reds now leading the race to complete a free transfer ahead of competition from Europe's elite sides.

Liverpool leading race for free transfer

As reported in Italy, relayed by Liverpool news outlet Paisley Gates, the Reds are the favourites to secure the services of Lloyd Kelly this summer. The Bournemouth man is out of contract at the end of the season and has rejected a number of offers from his current club as he pushes for a move away from the Vitality Stadium.

The 25-year-old has caught the attention of sides across Europe with Spurs and Newcastle showing an interest in the defender as well as Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan. Despite the strong competition for the Englishman's signature, it now appears that the Reds are leading the race to complete a deal.

Kelly joined Bournemouth in a £13million deal back in 2019. Arriving from Championship outfit Bristol City, the left-footed defender has cemented himself on the south coast, playing on 132 occasions for the Cherries. Whilst the 25-year-old has earned praise during his time at Bournemouth he has struggled with injury, spending large portions of his career on the treatment table.

It was these persistent injuries that led to a false start on Kelly's time with the Cherries however then-coach Eddie Howe still saw the defender's potential, telling the press:

"I think one of the great things about Lloyd when I first met him – I was blown away by how mature he was. How much mental capacity he had to want to improve and learn and to become the very best player that he can be."

“He’s certainly someone who I think could have leadership capabilities as he grows through his career.”

“But he is an outstanding player, got great potential. We just have to be careful with him in these first few weeks.”

Whilst Kelly would not walk straight into the starting eleven at Liverpool, there is no denying that he would be a vital asset to the team. Securing his services for free and commanding a modest pay packet of just £30,000 per week, bringing Kelly to Anfield would be a no-brainer for FSG.

Jos Buttler calls for better batting wickets in county cricket after NZ take command of first Test

Buttler says England must learn from New Zealand’s approach to first Test

George Dobell in Mount Maunganui24-Nov-2019Jos Buttler believes England must learn from New Zealand’s approach in the first Test in Mount Manganui. While England were kept in the field for more than 200 overs as New Zealand amassed more than 600 runs, Buttler felt it was England’s batsmen who had most to learn from New Zealand’s disciplined approach to the game. England were dismissed for 353 in their first innings; a score that looks ever more below par the longer the match progresses.”If we’re really critical, it’s the first-innings runs with the bat [which have cost us],” Buttler said. “New Zealand played a very patient game with the bat. They showed the value of that patient game of batting on flat wickets and setting your sights very high. BJ Watling and Mitchell Santner really set their stall out and batted for a long time. They put a lot of overs into our legs and built that score.”We have to learn to be able to do that. You look at the top sides around the world on flat wickets and they get very, very big scores and bat for a very, very long time.”That’s a big learning point for us. With the bat, just when you think you’re getting to a place where you need to be, there’s a lot more hard work to come to build those big scores.”You can’t fault the bowlers’ efforts. I thought the effort of everyone was outstanding.”Also read: Watling knock raises questions on England’s gameWhile Buttler accepted England had struggled to adapt from the “fast-forward cricket” played in England in recent times, he rejected the suggestion the Kookaburra ball should be adopted in Championship cricket. Instead he insisted the Dukes ball, which generally provides bowlers with more assistance, created more entertaining cricket but suggested the pitches in county cricket should be improved.”Test cricket with a Dukes ball in England is fantastic,” he said. “It’s very watchable. It’s a good contest between bat and ball. I think most people talk about introducing a Dukes to the rest of the world as opposed to the other way around.”The product we have with Test cricket in England is up there with the best product in the world so I wouldn’t want to tamper with that very much.”One thing potentially we can do in England is play on better batting wickets. The Dukes ball still offers the bowlers enough, especially in England if you get the overhead conditions. But we could look at playing county cricket on better batting wickets.”But we have played a lot of Test cricket in different conditions over the past year where it’s been fast-forward cricket. We have to be adaptable. There’s some education for all of us as batters.”What had looked a docile pitch when New Zealand batted suddenly looked full of danger when England began their second innings. But Butter suggested that was a reflection of the match situation and the pressure England were under as much as it was anything to do with the pitch. And, he said, it was another area England had to learn from New Zealand.”We have to learn about scoreboard pressure as well,” he said. “If you have got those runs on the board, if you have put miles into the legs of batsmen who have to field for 200 overs, it puts those guys under a lot of pressure when they come out to bat 10 minutes later.”Scoreboard pressure is massive. If we had made 450-500-plus in the first innings, it would have been a completely different outlook for the team batting second.”Buttler also defended Jofra Archer from any criticism, providing a reminder that he is only five Tests into his career.”I think you all forget Jofra is very new to international cricket,” he said. “It’s his first overseas tour and the first time he’s bowled with a Kookaburra ball. He is a very special talent but he is only five games into his Test career. You can’t ask too much of him too soon.”He’s a very special talent and we’ve got to look after him. He’s a fantastic guy and has a great attitude as well. He’ll learn from this and he’s a great attribute to us.”

Warner leans towards Konstas as BBL opening partner

Nic Maddinson would have been a contender to open before his injury while Cameron Bancroft is part of Sydney Thunder’s squad

Nic Maddinson’s finger surgery has left the pair as the two clearest options to partner new captain Warner at the top to start the BBL, which the pair enters with varying recent records.Konstas, yet to make his BBL debut, memorably announced himself with twin centuries in New South Wales’ first Shield game of the summer before making another for the Prime Ministers’ XI in a 50-over match against the Indians last month.Bancroft has failed to pass 20 in 15 of 19 digs across red and white-ball cricket this summer, but did make an unbeaten 105 in Western Australia’s penultimate Sheffield Shield game before the break. Warner said a firm decision had not yet been made on the opening partnership.”We’ll speak about it this week, we’ll see in the warm-up game. I’m probably erring between myself and probably Sammy Konstas at the top,” he said.Warner has been impressed by Konstas, but wants to talk shop with the 19-year-old ahead of Thunder’s first game against Adelaide Strikers next Tuesday.”We know he’s talented but it’s about going out there in the Twenty20 stuff and trying to work out how to sort of play that format as well, and what he’s going to bring to the table,” Warner said. “I’ll have a chat to him about how he wants to play and what his style of cricket is as well.”We’ll have these conversations in the next couple of days about how we want to play and making sure that everyone’s on the same page.”After being signed as a foundation player for the first BBL summer, Warner has dipped in and out of Thunder for the past two summers around Australian duties. Now retired from internationals, the 38-year-old is set to play the entire tournament for the first time in a big boost for a competition that has long struggled for star power in the absence of Test players.”I’m excited,” Warner said of the BBL. “It’s another challenge for me. I’ll uphold my own standards and make sure I’m contributing to the team and getting us off to a good start and leading by example of the field with the captaincy.”With West Indies globetrotter Sherfane Rutherford and rising star Ollie Davies also on the books, Warner said he held high expectations for Thunder’s batting order after a last-placed finish last summer.”There’s questions for all us to answer the last couple of years, the way that we’ve played,” he said. “We’ve got some craft in the middle and hopefully at the top of the order we can fire as well.”
