Nick Gubbins century grinds Somerset towards submission

Nick Gubbins effortlessly struck his third LV=Insurance County Championship as Hampshire ground Somerset towards submission on day three at the Ageas Bowl.Left-handed batter Gubbins gracefully hit an unbeaten 139 – his highest score for Hampshire since joining from Middlesex – to move past 900 runs in the Championship this season.Together with Fletcha Middleton and James Vince’s half-centuries, Gubbins led Hampshire to a 501-run lead having forced Somerset to wallow in the south coast heat.Facing a minimum of 128 overs to bat out, the visitors slumped to 38 for 2 but Sean Dickson’s unbeaten 63 held them together. They reached the close on 102 for 2 with 400 still required to win.Hampshire’s title ambitions had been ended by 11am by Surrey’s victory over Warwickshire.Their openers Toby Albert and Middleton had tediously scored 45 runs in 23 overs the previous evening, but their lack of adventure paid dividends, having taken much of the lacquer off the ball. They batted with more intent as they took their partnership to 80 with little fuss, Middleton reaching his fourth fifty in his debut season. They both fell within four overs of each other, Middleton bowled two balls after reaching the milestone and Albert was caught and bowled by New Zealander Neil Wagner, on his Somerset debut.Gubbins had been incredibly slow, on an even slower pitch, in the first innings to take his seasonal strike rate to the third lowest in Division One – only Dom Sibley and Luke Proctor were slower for those who had scored more than 200 runs. This time around he showed an attacking flair, taking part of a cover-drive battle with Vince as he reached 50 in 81 balls. The 135 balls his subsequent century came in, were the fastest of his six tons for Hampshire.Lewis Gregory, although on the pitch, was not used at all on day three, while fellow opening bowler Jack Brooks only bowled five overs before the declaration. As such, Gubbins and Vince – whose 50 came in 66 balls – found the going easy with little pressure built to stop them from scoring at will. The run rate from the morning session 3.94 before moving to 4.97 in the afternoon.Vince was caught from behind to end a 162-run stand, but Tom Prest picked up where he left off to continue the flow of runs with Gubbins – who is enjoying the second-best Championship season of his career. The pair added 79 together before the long-awaited declaration came at tea.Liam Dawson was the main worry for Somerset, with the occasional spin more threatening than pace on a feather-bed. And it came to pass as the left-armer had Tom Lammonby stumped with his third delivery.Tom Abell followed when James Fuller’s extra pace was edged to second slip, where Vince took a sharp catch.Dickson and Andy Umeed showed tenacity and a backbone vital to save Hampshire from defeat. Dickson, in particular, looked in good order to reach his half-century in 86 balls.

Liverpool make contact to sign 22 y/o PSG star and already receive reply

A new report claims Liverpool have made contact with a “superb” Paris Saint-Germain star over a summer move to Anfield and the Champions League winners have already responded.

Liverpool eyeing two Premier League players after Kerkez

Reds supporters couldn’t have asked for a much more positive start to the summer transfer window, with the arrival of Florian Wirtz having the potential to be huge. Not only that, but Jeremie Frimpong has also joined and Milos Kerkez is on the verge of coming in from Bournemouth.

Liverpool’s business may not stop there, however, and another Cherries player, Antoine Semenyo, continues to be linked with a move to the club. He has been mentioned as an option for some time, following an excellent season in the Premier League in 2024/25, in which he scored 11 times.

Antoine Semenyo for Bournemouth.

A new centre-back has to be looked at by the Reds at some point, considering Jarell Quansah is off to Bayer Leverkusen, and a bid for Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi could be made at some point this week.

Further up the pitch, Lyon winger Malick Fofana has been talked about as an exciting young target, with Liverpool ahead of Chelsea in the race to snap him up.

Liverpool make contact with PSG star Barcola

According to The Boot Room, Liverpool have now made contact and enquired with Paris Saint-Germain about signing winger Bradley Barcola this summer.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea are all in the same boat, but it is stated that PSG don’t want the France international to leave and have told those clubs their stance.

Paris St Germain's BradleyBarcola

It looks unlikely that Liverpool will be able to entice Barcola to Anfield, but if the situation changes, they should be looking to bring him in as a hugely gifted option.

The Frenchman is now a Champions League winner after PSG’s brilliance last season, and he played his part in the success, scoring three goals and registering four assists in the competition.

At just 22, there is still so much more to come from Barcola as the years pass, and while he is at his best on the left wing, his versatility allows him to be a huge threat on the right flank and even in a central attacking role.

He was lauded as a “superb” player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig back in 2023, and has only grown as a footballer since then, and Liverpool’s best chance of signing him may be if PSG sign another attacker this summer, potentially stunting his growth there.

Slot's answer to Mane: Liverpool chasing "monster" £70m Premier League star

Liverpool have set their sights on another attacking star this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 24, 2025

Granted, new wide options aren’t essential for the Reds, especially if both Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo stay put, but players with the long-term ability of Barcola may not come around too often.

Were the pitches tougher to bat on in the 2023 India-Australia series or the 2017 one? Here's what the data says

Looking at pitching lines and lengths for offspinners against right-hand batters tells a story

Kartikeya Date13-Apr-2023Australia toured India for four Tests each in 2017 and 2023 and lost 1-2 both times. On its website, the BCCI publishes scorecards and ball-tracking records for each ball of these series (and others). Readers can look up any ball in a recent Test, ODI, T20I or IPL match played in India, one at a time.Related

Why you can't counter good spin bowling by just sweeping

This is the way: Going around the wicket to take buckets of wickets

Is the ICC's pitch-rating system fit for purpose?

These records make available the pitching point (line and length of the delivery), interception point (the point at which the ball hit the bat, pad or a part of the batter’s body, if at all), and the beehive point (the point at which the ball would have crossed, or did cross, the plane of the stumps). Additionally, the ball-tracking record provides measures of turn, seam movement and speed, among others. This is a treasure trove of information made available by the BCCI.ESPNcricinfo records a control measurement for each delivery. This is an answer (either yes or no) to the question “Did the ball end up where the batter intended?” This article uses these two types of records – ball-tracking and control – to describe the contest between offspinners and right-hand batters in the 2017 and 2023 series.Kartikeya DatePitch maps showing the pitching points and interception points for balls bowled by offspinners to right-hand batters in the two series are in the graphs above and below.Kartikeya DateFirst impressions suggest that the line of attack was straighter in 2023, mostly because the offspinners bowled around the wicket to right-handers most of the time. These distinctions are also shown in the table below. (This table includes all deliveries by offspinners to right-hand batters in these two series for which complete ball-tracking records (pitching, interception, beehive) are available. Records are not complete for 103 balls in the 2017 series and 36 balls in the 2023 series; 15 false shots and one dismissal in 2017 and six false shots and 0 dismissals in 2023 are consequently missed in this record.)

The effect of the change from over-the-wicket (predominant in 2017) to round the wicket (predominant in 2023) is evident most clearly in comparing balls of type B (not hitting the stumps, intercepted in line), and balls of type C (hitting the stumps, intercepted outside the line). While the frequency of false shots against type B was nearly double that of type C in both series, the conversion of false shots to dismissals was reversed. In 2017, getting outside the line meant safety for the right-hander against the offspinner. In 2023, it didn’t.The eight pitches did not offer assistance to the spinners and seamers equally. The characteristics of each pitch, as rendered by the control figures, are in the tables below. Pitches offered different degrees of turn, bounce, and variability in bounce.

The pitch in Indore was the most difficult of those in the two series because it offered generally low bounce that was highly uneven. By comparison, the Bengaluru pitch from 2017 also offered significant variable bounce to the fingerspinners, but the ball generally bounced more there. The Bengaluru pitch was probably not easier to bat on compared to the Indore one, but it was easier for the spinner to threaten the stumps in Indore. Nathan Lyon’s eight-wicket haul in the first innings in Bengaluru included six caught dismissals. His eight-wicket haul in Indore included six bowled or leg-before-wicket dismissals.

The tables suggest that five – Pune, Bangalore, Nagpur, Indore and Delhi – of the eight pitches could be considered spin-friendly and the other three might be considered less so, with reliable bounce and moderate turn. Batters managed a false shot once every 5.7 balls or better against fingerspin in these three Tests.Kartikeya DateThe graphs above and below show the interception points for right-hand batters facing offspinners in the 2017 and 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy Tests. The one above shows the distribution of false shot rates according to interception points in Dharamsala, Ranchi and Ahmedabad. The second graph below shows the same for Pune, Bangalore, Nagpur, Delhi and Indore. The batting crease in the graphs is at 1.2m and the stumps are at 0.0m.Kartikeya DateFor the most part, batters try to play forward (they meet the ball at at least 2.3m from the stumps), or back. These are also the interception points at which the batter is most assured. On the flat pitches, as long as the batter read the length against the offspinner and got forward or back, the jeopardy was minimal (false shots occur at a rate of between one in 20 balls and one in ten balls). But when the batter was beaten in the flight, the jeopardy increased (false shots occur at a rate of between one in seven balls and one in four balls). This is probably what players are describing when they say that they can “trust the pitch”; the spinner has to beat the bat in the air in these cases. On the turning pitches, batters were beaten not just in the air but also off the pitch. So even when the batter met the ball with a full forward stroke, or playing well back, the jeopardy hovered above a rate of one false shot every eight balls (about 12%), and climbed to one every three balls or so when the batter was beaten in the air as well. Batting becomes significantly more difficult on pitches of this sort.At this point, it is worth wondering whether a batter’s judgement of length is affected by the behaviour of the pitch. In other words, does the fact that the batter cannot trust the pitch affect judgement of length?Distribution of lengths of deliveries by off spinners to right hand batters on the three flat pitches.•Kartikeya DateThe graphs above and below show the range of lengths by interception points on the turners and the flat pitches in the India-Australia series. Consider that all the deliveries from an offspinner that the right-hand batter intercepts at a distance of two metres from the stumps are arranged from the fullest to the shortest delivery. This range of lengths is described in the graphs using three values – the median length, the length of the delivery at the 10th percentile in the list, and the length of the delivery in the 90th percentile in the list. For instance, for interception point 0.8 in the graphic above, 50% of the balls were around five metres or fuller, 10% were 4.3m or fuller, and 90% were 7.4m or fuller.Distribution of lengths of deliveries by off spinners to right hand batters on the five turning pitches.•Kartikeya DateAs readers will probably expect, the range of lengths to which the batter plays well forward or back is narrower than the range of lengths for which the batter is caught in between. But there is no discernible difference in the distribution of lengths to which batters play forward or back based on the amount of assistance offered by the pitch. The record does not support the idea that a turning pitch disrupts the batter’s judgment of length. It does make pretty much all lengths more difficult to play. If anything, there is some evidence going the other way – that batters are able to, and do, take more liberties with the length on flatter pitches compared to turners.By bowling around the wicket, offspinners in the 2023 series were able to overpitch less often – their average length was 4.84m, 8.2 inches shorter than in 2017. They were also able to attack the stumps more, and give the right-hand batter fewer scoring opportunities through the off side compared to 2017. On the whole, judging by the false-shot frequency, the pitches in 2017 were probably marginally more difficult to bat on than the pitches in 2023. But in 2023, both sides had deeper spin attacks than in 2017, and both sides fielded five bowlers when they could (Australia did as soon as Cameron Green became available). Consequently, the scores were lower. As illustrated in this article through a discussion of offspin bowling against right-hand batters, the ball-by-ball record, combined with control, provides a picture of the contest between bat and ball that is not available from the traditional scorecard. The scorecard directs our attention to dismissals. Consequently a lot of analysis and discussion in cricket is focused on deliveries which result in dismissals. Largely these deliveries just happen to be ones on which dismissals occur; they could just as likely have occurred on several other deliveries. A genuinely comparative picture of the two contesting teams in a cricket match would consider which team threatened dismissal more persistently than the other in the field. This type of discussion is only possible with data.International teams already use a far more elaborate record of each delivery while preparing for matches, and often with live data feeds during matches. Some basic portion of this data should be published by cricket boards in the public domain. It will be welcomed by fans, and it will enable a textured reading of the skilled labour of batting and bowling rather than the headline outcomes provided in traditional scorecards. The interception distance from the stumps has been calculated by Himanish Ganjoo. PIF believe 22-cap international will join Newcastle as £55m bid submitted

Following the frustration of transfer failure, PIF are now confident that they’ll sign one of their top targets after Newcastle United reportedly submitted a fresh bid worth around £55m.

The transfers that could turn Newcastle's summer around

Those at St James’ Park first attempted to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford at the start of this summer, only for reports to claim that he has picked Manchester United over anyone else. Then, the Magpies reportedly set their sights on Joao Pedro before he completed a familiar move from Brighton & Hove Albion to Chelsea. Newcastle were once again sent back to the drawing board.

In that time, however, a number of fresh targets have entered their radar while a deal to sign long-term target James Trafford looks likely to get over the line at long last this summer.

Alongside Trafford, the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Harvey Elliott have both reportedly entered Newcastle’s radar as they look to sign an attacking reinforcement. With Mbeumo likely to join Manchester United and Pedro already confirmed as a Chelsea player, Elliott and Kudus represent an ideal plan B this summer.

Mohammed Kudus celebrates for West Ham

The latter has attracted plenty of interest already this summer and could yet be on his way out of West Ham United. Elliott, meanwhile, is reportedly likely to leave Liverpool in search of more game time elsewhere this summer.

According to the most recent reports, however, it may be neither of those options that end Newcastle’s search for a winger. Instead, it could be one of their top targets to begin turning their summer fortunes around.

Newcastle submit fresh Elanga bid

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have now submitted a fresh £55m bid to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and PIF want the deal done “as soon as possible”. Those at St James’ Park are reportedly confident that the 22-cap Swede will become a Newcastle player and they will get their £55m offer green lit by Nottingham Forest.

If Newcastle manage to get deals over the line for both Trafford and Elanga, as is likely to be the case at this stage, then any early summer struggles will become an afterthought for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle now ready to hijack Sunderland move to sign £43m "leader"

The Magpies could deal their rivals quite the blow.

1 ByTom Cunningham Jul 4, 2025

Elanga’s arrival will particularly excite fans if the Magpies push on and welcome the winger in the coming weeks. The Forest star, who was described by Nuno Espirito Santo described as “special” last season, could form one of the deadliest front threes in the Premier League alongside Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Eighteen-team Quaid-e-Azam trophy to start from October 26

Pakistan’s premier domestic first-class competition has undergone major overhaul

Danyal Rasool22-Oct-2024Days after the 2024-25 Quaid-e-Azam trophy was delayed, the PCB have announced the final schedule for Pakistan’s premier domestic first-class competition. The tournament will begin on October 26, with the final on December 19.In a major overhaul, the days of parsimony when it came to the number of teams have flown out of the window. This year’s QeA will see 18 teams spread out into 16 regions take part; Lahore and Karachi have two teams each. Last year, just eight teams played the tournament, with the four years prior seeing just six participants. Karachi Whites are the defending champions.”Quaid-e-Azam Trophy is the pinnacle of domestic cricket in Pakistan as it is not just a tournament but also an event that showcases the immense talent across the country and prepares them for the challenges of international cricket,” Abdullah Niazi, the director of domestic operations, said in a statement. “As always, we will continue to provide the best possible platform for players to excel and show their capabilities on the biggest stage in domestic cricket as they will be rubbing their shoulders with the best players of the country.Related

It's October 19, and there's still no clarity on Quaid-e-Azam 2024-25 schedule

“Earlier we demonstrated a successful Champions One-Day Cup, and are fully committed to strengthening our domestic structure. The successful execution of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy remains at the heart of this commitment.”Just days ago, though, the fate of this year’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was uncertain. ESPNcricinfo understands the tournament was delayed, with the domestic cricket department awaiting the chairman’s sign-off for the tournament. The QeA was tentatively scheduled to start on October 20.The start date of October 26 is considerably later than usual. Just two of the last 15 years have seen the tournament begin after this date. The PCB opted to host the Champions One-Day Cup in September, Pakistan’s only meaningfully empty window until May, pushing the first-class competition deeper into the season. This means the Quaid-e-Azam trophy starts while Pakistan’s Test season – it’s busiest this century – will already be well into the fifth of seven home games. The final begins on December 19, a week out from the first Test in South Africa on December 26. Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan vice-captain Saud Shakeel suggested the first-class competition could be used to prepare for the tour of South Africa by attempting to replicate those conditions.”If you want to prepare for SENA [series in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia], you can do it during practice and first class cricket,” Shakeel said. “If there’s first-class cricket before South Africa, we could prepare those kinds of pitches there. But we should prepare pitches and conditions series-by-series, and according to the opposition.”

West Brom could sign a "fabulous" Diangana replacement who's an EFL veteran

West Bromwich Albion supporters won’t have to wait too much longer to see who their beloved Baggies will play in the opening matches of the new Championship season.

Indeed, the always hotly anticipated fixture list will be released next week, with Ryan Mason hopeful that whatever selection of fixtures is thrust his side’s way, they can start the fresh second-tier campaign with a bang, instead of a whimper.

One figure that definitely won’t feature under Mason’s early tenure is Grady Diangana, with the Congolese forward reportedly edging ever closer to a Hawthorns departure, after failing to seal an extended contract this summer.

Diangana's current situation

Mason’s arrival on the scene might well have contributed to the former West Ham United man wanting to leave, knowing that the 33-year-old boss would want to stamp his mark onto proceedings from the get-go.

It is a sad severing of the ties, however, with Diangana once viewed as an electric menace donning Baggies blue and white in both the Premier League and in the EFL.

In total, the 27-year-old would collect an impressive combined tally of 48 goals and assists from 202 appearances in the West Midlands, with Diangana often having the Hawthorns masses in the palm of his hand when pulling off unbelievable finishes like the one above.

But, the output on Diangana’s end had begun to dry up – as seen in just four goals and three assists coming his way last season – with a reported reunion now on the cards for him to uproot to Valencia to link up with ex-Baggies boss Carlos Corberan to try and recapture his best.

Whilst Diangana looks forward to his possible moment in the sun in Spain, West Brom will no doubt be on the hunt for a replacement to bolster their options in attack.

West Brom's "fabulous" Diangana replacement

After all, the long-standing servant’s exit will be felt in terms of the personnel Mason can select from.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Jed Wallace is the only other recognisable right winger in the depleted Baggies camp currently in the wake of Diangana moving on, whilst the rookie manager has even fewer faces to call upon in the number ten spot – another position that the 27-year-old was comfortable playing in – with John Swift also heading out of the building on a free transfer.

Therefore, in hunting down an immediate fix to Diangana’s exit, West Brom will need to win themselves a versatile and flexible presence who can play all over the attacking positions.

Who could that be? Well, former Derby County captain Tom Lawrence is perhaps their man. It has been reported by TEAMtalk this week that West Brom are interested in landing the now free agent forward.

Away from his ability to be adaptable making him a worthwhile candidate to replace Diangana, the 31-year-old also boasts a vast collection of goals and assists in the Championship himself, with a mighty 50 goals and 40 assists tallied up from 264 career appearances in the second-tier.

Staggeringly, that’s 42 more goal contributions than the Valencia-linked star managed during his entire Hawthorns spell, albeit from 62 fewer clashes.

The similarities don’t just stop here either, with Lawrence also prone to scoring an audacious strike or two during his celebrated Derby stay, much like Diangana at his Baggies peak.

His expertise in this regard even saw ex-Rams boss Gary Rowett label the entertaining Welshman as “fabulous” when the pair were together at Pride Park, as West Brom now pray he can arrive on the scene this summer and roll back the years to fire Mason and Co. to promotion.

Pulling off such a feat would make the managerial newcomer an instant icon at the Hawthorns, with Lawrence also entering into the club’s hall-of-fame no doubt by securing a promotion success Diangana could never get over the line.

Dinura Kalupahana leads from the front as Sri Lanka U19s rally at Wormsley

England had reduced Sri Lanka to 37 for 4 after winning the toss before the visiting captain’s 70 not out

ECB Reporters Network08-Jul-2024Sri Lanka 177 for 5 (Kalupahana 70*) vs EnglandSri Lanka’s middle order fought back after England had enjoyed a profitable morning on the opening day of the first Youth Men’s Test in Wormsley. The tourists finished a rain-shortened day at 177 for 5 after the Young Lions had expertly used bowler-friendly conditions in the opening hour to claim four wickets.New-ball pair Alex French and Naavya Sharma claimed the first three wickets with catches in the slip cordon before Rocky Flintoff ran out Sharujan Shanmuganathan after a terrible mix-up left both batsmen at the non-strikers’ end.Alex Green then had Mahith Perera caught behind in the over before a second rain delay, but an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 74 between captain Dinura Kalupahana and Diniru Abeywickramashingha hauled Sri Lanka back into the contest. With low cloud cover and a green-tinged pitch, Hamza Shaikh, captaining England Men U19s for the first time, had no hesitation in putting Sri Lanka into bat after winning the toss.Shaikh’s decision was vindicated almost immediately as Surrey’s tall right-armer French removed both openers inside the first half-hour. Freddie McCann held on to edges from Sadew Samarasinghe and Pulindu Perera at second slip.Gayana Weerasinghe flicked Sharma over the leg-side rope for six in a rare moment of attack from the tourists, but the Middlesex man had him in his next over when Noah Thain held a sharp catch to his right at first slip.Sharma was only called into the squad over the weekend and was celebrating with his teammates again soon after as Sri Lanka’s morning got worse.Shanmuganathan pushed into the off-side and set off for a single that Perera declined only after offering enough hesitation to entice his partner to commit. Flintoff needed only to lob the ball to wicketkeeper Jack Carney who removed the bails while the batsmen stared accusingly at each other.Sri Lanka were 49 for 4 when rain forced the players off for more than two hours. In a shortened middle session, Leicestershire’s Green grabbed the only wicket with his first ball of a new spell when Perera edged to Carney. After a second break the Sri Lanka batters opted to counter-punch. New batter Abeywickramasingha took the lead with six boundaries in his unbeaten 35 from 41 balls as the pressure was put back on England’s bowlers. That allowed Kalupahana time to show his class as he eased to his half-century, from 98 balls, with a boundary off Green. The captain then started to up his rate striking Farhan Ahmed over the ropes and was unbeaten on 70 when a third rain delay eventually ended play.
