Kane Richardson and Adam Zampa manage to make flight to Australia

There were concerns the pair could be stranded after the government’s suspension of flights from India

Reuters and ESPNcricinfo staff29-Apr-2021Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson have managed to leave India after pulling out of the IPL.Zampa and Richardson, team-mates for Royal Challengers Bangalore, were expected home in Australia later on Thursday, a spokesman for the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) said, where they will undergo two weeks hotel quarantine. There were concerns the pair would be stranded after the Australian government suspended passenger flights from India until May 15.About 40 Australians remain involved in the IPL as players, coaches, officials and commentators, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison said they would not be allowed to jump the queue for repatriation flights when they resume. The ACA said on Wednesday it was having “conversations” with Cricket Australia and the Australian government on how to repatriate cricketers from India at the end of the IPL.”One thing I can tell you is our players are under no expectations to look for specific favours,” ACA chief executive Todd Greenberg said on radio station 2GB. “There’s no free rides or any expectations from our players. What they are looking for is the right information so they can plan accordingly.”The regular IPL season ends on May 23, with playoffs to follow before the final on May 30.Andrew Tye was the first Australian to leave the tournament and he arrived back in Sydney earlier this week.Zampa and Richardson can expect to feature in Australia’s limited-overs tour of West Indies with the squad due to depart in late June for a trip that includes three ODIs and three T20Is.For the remaining players IPL-based who will feature on that tour, currently there is a 26-day period from the end of the IPL to when the squad departs with 14 of those being needed for quarantine in Australia.”We’re monitoring it almost daily. There’s no doubt about that,” head coach Justin Langer told Road to the Ashes show. “As it stands now, the guys will come back about 26 days before we’re supposed to leave for the West Indies tour, so we’ll be watching it closely.”

Australia's injuries fuel English optimism but task ahead is huge

The home side have handed out two debuts for the first time since 2019 while there remains much interest in the Perth pitch

Matt Roller20-Nov-2025

Big picture: England’s perfect storm

The multi-purpose Perth Stadium staged a Metallica concert earlier this month and another heavy-metal tour begins there on Friday morning. No series can compete with the Ashes for anticipation, and months of speculation will finally come to an end when the first ball of the 2025-26 series is bowled in front of a sold-out crowd. The first Test arrives with an unmistakable sense of English optimism, fuelled by the injury status of both teams’ fast bowlers. For once, the absentees are Australian: Pat Cummins (back) and Josh Hazlewood (hamstring) are unavailable, while Jofra Archer and Mark Wood will play in the same team for only the second time in Tests.Related

It represents the best-case scenario for England, who have spent the last three-and-a-half years under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s leadership building a team capable of competing in Australia. They are both aware that the next seven weeks will provide a lasting verdict on their tenures: McCullum has dubbed it “the biggest series of all of our lives”.Four years ago, England returned from Australia as a broken team, thrashed 4-0 on a tour made even more miserable by oppressive Covid restrictions. Since then, they have changed their approach to become Test cricket’s most aggressive team, with a settled batting line-up and a regenerated bowling attack since the retirements of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. But context is key: even being competitive on this tour would represent a marked improvement from England’s last three away Ashes series. The scarcity of the draw in the modern era means that they will likely need to win three Tests out of five to regain the urn; they have not managed to win even once in their last 15 in Australia, losing 13.Reports of Australia’s demise are an exaggeration: they have won 14 out of 18 Tests since the drawn 2023 Ashes in England, and are unbeaten in their last six series at home. Steven Smith, their stand-in captain, is an all-time great with a formidable record against England; in Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon, they can boast two of the four Australians with over 400 Test wickets.Ready to go: Steven Smith and Ben Stokes pose ahead of the Ashes•Getty Images

But there are hints of vulnerability, not least with Australia fielding two debutants in an Ashes Test for the first time since January 2011. Jake Weatherald will become Usman Khawaja’s sixth opening partner since David Warner’s retirement, and Brendan Doggett is the first fast bowler to win an Australia cap in four years. Two years ago, Australia took a 2-0 lead in England but were clinging onto a 2-2 draw by the end of the tour, ultimately saved from a series defeat by the rain in Manchester. It left the clash of styles between England’s power and Australia’s pragmatism in an unsatisfactory stalemate, whetting the appetite for this rematch. This is the first time since 1982-83 that an Ashes series in Australia has not started at the Gabba, with Perth now locked in as the host of the first Test of the summer. Starc said on Wednesday that Australia’s players would rather be in Brisbane, while England will hope that a change of venue brings a change in their fortunes.

In the spotlight: Mitchell Starc and Jofra Archer

In the absence of Cummins and Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc is the last man standing in Australia’s long-established pace trio, a fact which he joked made him feel “old” after training on Wednesday. He is the undisputed leader of the attack, and England’s approach against him will be instructive: Starc leaked 4.78 runs per over in the 2023, but was the leading wicket-taker on either side despite missing the first Test. If Australia bowl first, memories will immediately return to the first ball of the 2021-22 series, when he cleaned up Rory Burns at the Gabba to set the tone for a 4-0 win.He may only have played two Tests in the last four years, but Jofra Archer‘s gradual comeback to international cricket after back and elbow injuries has culminated in him being available this week. It will be his first Ashes appearance since his maiden Test series six years ago, when he took 22 Australian wickets at 20.27 and hit Steven Smith on the head with a lightning-fast bouncer at Lord’s. He is expected to open the bowling alongside Gus Atkinson, and Ben Stokes plans to use him in “short, sharp bursts” to break games open. Archer’s return to red-ball cricket in the English summer was a reminder of his potency against left-handers, and Australia are expected to field five in their top eight.

Team news: Another batting reshuffle for Australia, England set for all pace

Australia will hand debuts to two 31-year-olds: opening batter Jake Weatherald, the top run-scorer in last season’s Sheffield Shield, and seamer Brendan Doggett. There is also a recall for Marnus Labuschagne, who was the spare batter during their most recent series against West Indies, with Cameron Green shuffling down to No. 6 at Beau Webster’s expense. Steven Smith returns as captain in Cummins’ absence, leading Australia for the 41st time in Tests.Australia: 1 Jake Weatherald, 2 Usman Khawaja, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith (capt), 5 Travis Head, 6 Cameron Green, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Nathan Lyon, 10 Scott Boland, 11 Brendan Doggett.England named a 12-man squad on Wednesday, but went no futher, with Shoaib Bashir expected to be the one to miss out. Mark Wood has been cleared to play what will be his first match since February’s Champions Trophy – and his first Test match since last August – after hamstring soreness last week, and is set to form part of a five-man, all-pace attack. Ollie Pope, who captained their most recent Test against India, has been replaced by Harry Brook as vice-captain but retains his spot at No. 3 after pressure from Jacob Bethell.England (probable): 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Jamie Smith (wk), 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Gus Atkinson, 10 Mark Wood, 11 Jofra Archer.1:45

Will Australian pitches affect England’s Ashes chances?

Pitch and conditions

Curator Isaac McDonald predicts that his pitch will offer fast bowlers the “pace and bounce” that has long been associated with cricket in Western Australia, and that cracks could open up as the Test wears on. The weather has been relatively cool in Perth in the build-up and will continue throughout, with forecast highs of 28 degrees Celsius and the possibility of occasional showers over the weekend. Around 10,000 England fans are in Perth for the first Test, with more than 40,000 expected to attend across the series.

Stats and trivia

    • Australia have won 13 and drawn two of their last 15 men’s Ashes Tests on home soil. Their last defeat to England in Australia was in January 2011.
    • Perth last hosted a men’s Ashes Test in 2017/18, when Australia won by an innings and 41 runs at the WACA.
    • Each of the five previous men’s Tests staged at Perth Stadium has been won by the team batting first.
    • Jofra Archer and Mark Wood have only played once together previously in Tests, against West Indies in Southampton (July 2020).
    • Mitchell Starc needs 13 wickets in the series to overtake Wasim Akram as the most prolific left-arm fast bowler in Test history.
    • Brendan Doggett will become the third indigenous man to play for Australia in men’s Tests, after Jason Gillespie and team-mate Scott Boland.

    Quotes

“The first three days are sold out, which is outstanding. There’s going to be plenty of viewers on TV, both here and back in England as well, so hopefully we can put on a good show and entertain plenty of people.”
“We’ve obviously come here with a goal, and that goal is to get on that plane in mid-January, returning to England, being Ashes winners. But we know it’s going to be very, very tough.”

Imagine him & Magassa: West Ham can unleash 20-year-old who's "like Diame"

They might be in the relegation zone and have a single win from their last five Premier League games, but the future could be bright for West Ham United.

Granted, things off the pitch and the relationship between the ownership and fans are in a dire state, but with Nuno Espírito Santo now in the dugout, there is a feeling that he could steer the side to a respectable finish this season.

Moreover, while they have not performed well enough, there is real talent in this squad, with summer signing Soungoutou Magassa being someone who could explode with the right coaching.

On top of that, there are several truly exciting players in the academy, including one who could be unreal with the Frenchman and has been compared to former Hammer Mohamed Diamé.

Why West Ham signed Magassa

In late August, West Ham completed the £17.3m signing of Magassa, and while it was undoubtedly done with the intention of him making an impact this season, it also feels like a move that could help make the midfield so much better in the long term.

The simple reason for this is that the incredible Frenchman is brilliant when it comes to the defensive and offensive side of the game – he is someone who can shield the backline, but also spring attacks for his side.

For example, the respected analyst Ben Mattinson has claimed that the Stains-born gem has an immense ability to “spray passes wide out to the wings” but that he’s also got very “high potential” for playing as a six “due to how he reads the game and his pure athleticism.”

Likewise, U23 scout Antonio Mango has highlighted how “strong in both offensive and defensive duels” the youngster is.

This ability to excel in both parts of the game is unsurprisingly represented in his underlying numbers.

In short, Magassa is an excellent prospect, and in more good news, West Ham could have another gem who’d be brilliant alongside him, someone who has been compared to Diame.

West Ham's ideal teammate for Magassa

There are several exciting prospects currently plying their trade in West Ham’s academy, from Josh Landers to Preston Fearon.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

However, only one youngster has been compared to former Hammer Diame, which is Mohamadou Kanté.

The promising Frenchman joined the club from Paris FC last summer, but remained in the French capital for the season, where he made eight appearances in what turned out to be a promotion-winning campaign.

Described as having “good anticipation” and being “very calm and composed on the ball” by one analyst, another has been bolder, claiming he “moves like Mo Diame.”

The argument behind such a comparison is that, like the retired midfielder, the youngster has “long-ranging legs that eat up ground & extend to win the ball off the toes of the opposition.”

However, he’s more than just a tenacious ball-winner, with the same analyst highlighting his “nibble feet & intelligent, composed passing.”

It’s the combination of all these traits that have seen him rack up an impressive tally of two goals and two assists in just eight appearances for the U21s so far this season.

Moreover, as he’s comfortable playing in central and defensive midfield, he could end up being a brilliant partner for Magassa, with one driving forward and the other sitting back to help the defence.

Ultimately, it’s still early in his West Ham career, but Kante looks to be a real star in the making.

Spencer Johnson on Ashes radar after being named in Australia A squad

South Australia left-arm quick Spencer Johnson has vaulted onto Australia’s Ashes radar after being named in a 14-man Australia A squad to tour New Zealand in April alongside a mix of current Test squad members and long-term Test hopefuls with the mid-year England tour in mind.Peter Handscomb, who is currently in Australia’s Test XI in India, as well as India squad members Matt Renshaw and Mitchell Swepson, have been named but there were some notable absentees. Australia’s selectors opted to allow some recent Australia A and Test representatives to go to England to play in the County Championship as part of their Ashes bids rather than be pulled out of county deals to play two four-day games in Lincoln with Dukes balls in the first two weeks of April.Johnson, 26, has burst onto the selectors’ radar since starring in his maiden BBL season for Brisbane Heat. He has since made his Sheffield Shield debut for South Australia and taken bags of 6 for 87 and 7 for 47 in his first two first-class games. Young Victoria seamer Mitchell Perry has also been rewarded for his outstanding form having taken 19 wickets in his last three Shield games.Johnson and Perry are part of a bevy of seam bowlers in the A squad including Wes Agar, Xavier Bartlett, and Joel Paris while Swepson is the only spinner selected having not played a Test on the India tour. Leading Shield wicket-takers Michael Neser and Mark Steketee have not been selected for Australia A as both have extensive experience playing in England already.Related

The same thinking applies to leading Shield runscorer Cameron Bancroft and fringe Test opener Marcus Harris who both played in the 2019 Ashes series and remain in the selectors’ Ashes thinking with discussions to be had over what Australia’s best opening combination could be in England.Bancroft is in career-best form having scored four Shield centuries this season, and six in the last 12 months, as well as plundered runs in limited-overs cricket for WA and Perth Scorchers. But he has already played 34 first-class matches in England over five separate seasons there. Harris has also scored two Shield hundreds this season and is set to head back to Gloucestershire at the start of April having scored seven first-class centuries in England.Another West Australia opener Sam Whiteman, who was player of the match in last year’s Shield final, has also not been selected as he has signed to play the full county season with Northamptonshire.Tasmania left-hander Tim Ward is set to open for Australia A in New Zealand alongside Renshaw with South Australia’s Henry Hunt not selected despite being an Australia A regular in recent years and scoring a century on the tour of Sri Lanka last year. The selectors have also taken a long-term view with the batting group with 18-year-old West Australian Teague Wyllie, 20-year-old Victoria left-hander Campbell Kellaway and 24-year-old South Australia batter Nathan McSweeney selected for the tour to learn from alongside the experience of Handscomb and Renshaw.Veteran Queensland wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson has been rewarded for his outstanding form at Shield level and for Australia A on last year’s tour of Sri Lanka having been named as the squad’s sole wicketkeeper. Josh Inglis is touring with Australia’s ODI squad to India just prior the A series in New Zealand but is still highly regarded as a Test prospect behind incumbent Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey.Chair of selectors George Bailey noted it was an opportunity to expose a younger group to different conditions.”We are committed to the continued expansion of the Australia A program and these games are specifically designed to expose these players to conditions they may not experience in Australia,” Bailey siad.”With an Ashes this winter and a tour of New Zealand early next year, this is a great opportunity for this group to perform in similar environments to those countries.”Having Pete Handsomb, Matt Renshaw, Mitch Swepson and Jimmy Peirson will add experience as senior players who can impart their knowledge of different conditions.”The Australia A squad will be coached by current Australia assistant Andre Borovec. Former Sri Lanka Test batter Thilan Sameraweera will also tour as the batting consultant with Scott Prestwidge looking after the bowling group having been part of the coaching staff with Australia’s women’s team during their recent World Cup triumph in South Africa. The tour of New Zealand will also be reciprocated with Australia hosting New Zealand A for two four-day games and three 50-over matches to be played in Australia’s northern states in September this year.Australia A squad to tour New Zealand: Wes Agar, Xavier Bartlett, Aaron Hardie, Peter Handscomb, Spencer Johnson, Campbell Kellaway, Nathan McSweeney, Joel Paris, Mitch Perry, Jimmy Peirson, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Swepson, Tim Ward, Teague Wyllie

Smith ready for the real stuff after passing baseball-cage test

“Hitting the ball felt completely fine,” Steven Smith says of the training sessions with a hard cricket ball in a baseball cage in New York

Andrew McGlashan30-Jun-2025Steven Smith got creative in his recovery from the finger injury that ruled him out of the first Test against West Indies, finding a baseball batting cage in New York where he was able to face throwdowns before rejoining the squad in Barbados.Smith suffered a compound dislocation of his right little finger when he dropped Temba Bavuma at Lord’s during the World Test Championship final but, despite the gruesome nature of the injury which made Smith feel “sick” when he saw it with team-mates noting how he went pale, he avoided the need for surgery.Given he was limited in what he could do early in the recovery, and needed to be careful how much he sweated, he opted to travel the five hours to New York where he owns an apartment.Related

Smith on track to return and reclaim No. 4 spot in Grenada

However you get 'em – Head, Carey, Webster show the way

Chappell: Smith's new approach to batting is revolutionary

Smith began facing tennis balls and soft cricket balls before moving to hard ones in his second session in the cage, sending the footage back to Barbados to the Australia medical staff, who were happy with his progress.”My mate actually told me about it, which was ideal because it was pretty warm there [in New York],” he said. “Underneath this bridge there was a batting cage, and he was able to throw me a few balls there, so it was good to be in the shade, it was pretty hot there.”After returning to the Caribbean, Smith had his stitches removed on Sunday and fitted with a thinner splint, which should make things easier when wearing batting gloves. He will have his first proper net against bowlers on Tuesday in Grenada, but was confident of being able to slot back into the side, which would mean Josh Inglis dropping out.”For me, it’ll just feel like training as normal, I think,” he said. “I don’t really feel any pain or anything. [It’s] just getting used to the splint on and the slight limited movement. It’s not too bad, I’ve got a lot of movement there now, so that feels good. Hitting the ball felt completely fine.

“These guys are good players, there’s been a lot of talk around it but… we just need to give them an opportunity”Steven Smith on newcomers to the side, like Sam Konstas

“Fielding some balls in front of the wicket will probably be the strangest thing for me, I don’t think I’ve ever done that in a Test match. Fielding at either probably mid-on or mid-off or fine leg, is a bit different to standing at the second or first slip.”Smith watched the first Test closely and joked “there was probably a few occasions I was happy that I wasn’t out there,” given the amount the pitch was offering for the quick bowlers. He had sympathy with the challenges posed to the top order and, in a similar vein to coach Andrew McDonald, acknowledged it could take time for things to click for the likes of Sam Konstas, citing his own wait for a maiden Test century, which came in his 12th match and 23rd innings.”These guys are good players, there’s been a lot of talk around it but… we just need to give them an opportunity,” he said. “It doesn’t always come around straight away. We’ve just got to give them an opportunity and let them get used to playing in these conditions and in international cricket. These guys have some really good talent and I think they have bright futures.”The injury made Steven Smith feel “sick” when he saw it with team-mates noting how he went pale•Getty ImagesThe squad will travel to Grenada on Monday, where none of the current team has played before. The last time Australia were on the island was for a pair of ODIs in 2008. Due to the short turnaround between Tests, the incumbent fast bowlers are not expected to train much in the lead-up. Given his lack of batting in the last couple of weeks, Smith said he would likely have two sessions. The previous Test at the National Stadium was in 2022 when England toured. It was a low-scoring affair dominated by the pace bowlers. The visitors were bundled for 120 in their second innings as West Indies clinched the series 1-0 with the medium pace of Kyle Mayers claiming 5 for 18. Anything similar will leave left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann on the sidelines again. With Josh Hazlewood taking five wickets in Barbados, it would be a very tough call for the selectors should they opt to leave out a quick at any point in the series.West Indies’ former captain Kraigg Brathwaite will be playing his 100th Test, while Mitchell Starc will notch up No. 99 and could join the century club in Jamaica. Starc also needs nine more wickets to reach 400.

Tottenham make highest bid for 71-cap star who's scored at the World Cup

Tottenham are unrelenting in their pursuit of fresh additions right now, and are looking to maintain their momentum after hijacking Chelsea’s deal for Xavi Simons in the early hours of Friday morning.

Simons, who can play out wide in Son Heung-min’s previous position, and as a central playmaker to combat the losses of Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison through injury, has arrived at N17 with bags of potential.

After Tottenham agreed a £52 million deal for the ex-La Masia gem from under Chelsea’s nose, following “overnight” talks (Fabrizio Romano), Simons now dons the iconic number 7 shirt previously worn by Son.

The Netherlands international spent a fair portion of early 2024/2025 out with ankle ligament damage, but still managed 14 goal contributions over his final 18 Bundesliga appearances for Leipzig last season.

Simons’ proven quality, versatility and experience for his age (nearly 140 senior appearances in total) makes him a statement last-minute signing for Spurs, not to mention a much-needed one after their botched deals for Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze.

Following on from their move for Simons, it is believed that Tottenham want to sign another attacking player and centre-back before the Monday 7pm cut-off.

Tottenham make £17 million bid for Man City defender Manuel Akanji

According to Sky Italia, Tottenham and AC Milan’s race for Man City defender Manuel Akanji has taken a twist.

As per their information, while the Rossoneri have made an offer for the 71-cap Swiss international, who scored against Portugal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, it is Spurs emerging as favourites for his signature.

For one, Akanji would prefer to remain in the Premier League. And two, Tottenham have made the highest offer for Akanji to City, amounting to around £17 million and trumping Milan’s opening proposal of £13 million plus bonuses.

Milan are working to reach an agreement with the player, but it appears they have some groundwork to cover if they’re to beat Frank’s side to Akanji’s signature.

Interestingly, if Milan fail to win this transfer against the Lilywhites, they’ve identified former Spurs defender Juan Foyth as an alternative.

Crystal Palace close to deal for exciting youngster with fee almost agreed

Crystal Palace are closing in on some late deals and look to be nearing an agreement to bring an exciting gem to Selhurst Park, according to reports.

Crystal Palace secure Europa Conference League qualification in Norway

Despite the trials and tribulations that have followed Crystal Palace over the last few months amid their expulsion from the Europa League, the Eagles will play league phase football for the first time ever this season after a 1-0 aggregate triumph against Fredrikstad FK over two legs in the Conference League.

Oliver Glasner has now added continental qualification to winning the FA Cup and Community Shield at Crystal Palace. Post-match, he lauded his side for the character they showed on a taxing night to complete a ‘huge’ achievement by securing their slot.

He said: “It is a huge achievement to go into the group stage. It was our second goal of the season and we have achieved that by the end of August which is great.

“The first one was winning the Community Shield – which we did – and now, with all of the noise of being demoted to the Conference League, we have done that too. We defended excellently and did not give them a chance but on the other side, we know we can and have to play better in possession, but overall it’s important be in the group stage.”

Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson is on Crystal Palace’s radar after their capture of Yeremy Pino and could arrive to offer further attacking depth in the wide areas.

After a frustrating spell in Italy, the Eagles may also offer Juventus defender Lloyd Kelly another shot at Premier League life before the end of the window amid speculation over Marc Guehi’s future.

Speaking of Arsenal, reports suggest that Crystal Palace could now be about to pinch one of their youth talents if reports are to be believed.

Crystal Palace set to agree compensation fee for Dan Casey

According to News Shopper, Crystal Palace are now close to agreeing a compensation fee to sign Dan Casey, who has rejected the chance to stay at the Emirates Stadium in favour of a move across London.

The 17-year-old, who turns 18 on Sunday, registered 20 goals for the Gunners’ Under-18 side last term and is viewed internally as a direct replacement for Jesse Derry following his switch to Chelsea.

Crystal Palace now make contact to sign "incredible" £20m Guehi replacement

The Eagles have made an approach over a deal for a new defender.

ByDominic Lund Aug 27, 2025

With Derry’s compensation fee set to go to a tribunal, the Eagles could inherit a multi-million-pound sum for his services, meaning a profit could be made should everything go to plan.

Ultimately, versatile gem Casey, who can play in attacking midfield or on the right flank, would likely be one for the future once he is to arrive at the club.

Nevertheless, talent that can be moulded for the future can save millions down the line; hence, why the swoop makes a great deal of sense from a Crystal Palace perspective.
