Handling World T20 hype a 'challenge' for Brathwaite

By the end of his first IPL season, Carlos Brathwaite hopes to take back two things: the knowledge of how to play spin and a better understanding of the demands placed on successful athletes

Nagraj Gollapudi in Kolkata09-Apr-2016He puts his long limbs to use, lunging forward to meet the ball, but Imran Tahir’s legbreak turns sharply. Then he jumps out of the crease but is beaten again, this time by Shahbaz Nadeem’s left-arm spin. Two balls later, he attempts to play from the crease against a young Delhi Daredevils legspinner, only for the ball to take the outside edge.West Indies allrounder Carlos Brathwaite is at sea against spin on the eve of his first IPL match at the very ground where he brought the cricket world to its feet last Sunday at the World T20 final. “Welcome to the IPL, Carlos,” the spinners may have chuckled.Half an hour earlier, Brathwaite had faced questions of a different kind. Questions that tested his brain less and hurt his ego even less. How many sixes will you hit in the IPL? How will you inspire yourself in a low-intensity tournament like the IPL? How will you deal with the pressure of everyone wanting you to play the impact role down the order?Over the past week, Braithwaite, who laid to rest curiosity over his mind-boggling INR 4.2 crore IPL price tag, has been repeatedly asked to relive his memorable last-over demolition of Ben Stokes. Brathwaite has recounted the tale with a straight face, with a sunny smile, and with honesty.Concurrently, in less than a week, Braithwaite has also learned the cost of what he calls instant stardom. As happy as he is to speak of his heroics, he wants to turn the page now.”I would be honest and say it was a bit of a challenge. I had time management problems to begin with,” Braithwaite said at a press conference in Kolkata. “[I have been giving] constant interviews and basically reliving the four sixes each and every day since Sunday night. So it has been a challenge to get off the hype. I really became aware in the last couple of days and I have been trying to get the interviews out of the way.”Brathwaite realises that expectations are bound to multiply every time he is out to bat. He speaks with clarity and an endearing honesty, not so common among newcomers on the international stage.”Now I am aware of the challenges that instant stardom have brought me,” he said. “It is something that I look forward to if I continue to be successful; it’s something that I have to cope with.”Daredevils will reportedly play Kolkata Knight Riders on the same pitch that was used for the World T20 final. Won’t that be a psychological boost?”If I look at it as a psychological advantage then it can disadvantage me and my team,” Brathwaite said. “Playing at the same ground, in front of the same fans, but it is a completely different tournament, different game, different team. I am in a different team myself, different opposition, so I have to treat the game with respect. I have to prepare the way I prepared for the World Cup. React to what is done on the day as opposed to live in the past and hoping it happens again basically.”By the end of the season, Brathwaite hopes to take back two things: the knowledge of how to play spin and a better understanding of the demands placed on successful athletes. And the one man who can help him in that context is his childhood hero, who is now mentoring Daredevils.”I am privileged enough to come into the team as a World Cup winner,” he said. “Privileged enough to take some lessons. I am also privileged to work with someone that I have idolised all my career, Rahul Dravid. We had a couple of chats. It is just about me becoming better as a person and as a player.”One of the areas I want to personally improve on is playing spin. I spoke to Rahul about it. In six weeks I want to go back to the West Indies with a better understanding of how to play spin bowling, how to rotate it, how to score off it and take that knowledge from the IPL back to the West Indies.”Back at Eden Gardens, having failed to break through the web cast by the various Daredevils spinners, Brathwaite walks to the practice strip adjacent to the pitch that vaulted him to international stardom. It is time for range hitting, and he is up and running almost immediately. The first throw is punched over long off. The second is tonked over deep midwicket. Then he gets a leading edge that clears mid-off. He waits, and then deposits the next one deep into the stands behind cow corner. The next one flies over long-on. Dravid watches the trajectory of the hits with admiration. And just like that, Braithwaite is back in the zone, once again reliving the memories of the night he helped West Indies become champions of the world.

Historic Dawson feat leads Hampshire to crushing win over Middlesex

Allrounder becomes first Hampshire player since 1901 to score a century and take 10 wickets in a match

ECB Reporters Network27-Jun-2023Liam Dawson completed the greatest LV= Insurance County Championship performance of his career by becoming only the fourth Hampshire player to score a century and take 10 wickets in a match
.
Dawson had scored 141 in Hampshire’s only innings before taking six for 40 and six for 90 in an extraordinary outing, as the hosts thrashed Middlesex by an innings and 61 runs inside three days. His career-best match figures of 12 for 130 enters him into an exclusive Hampshire club of 19th-century players Arthur Ridley and Francis Lacey, and Charlie Llewellyn in 1901. Worcestershire’s Jack Shantry was the last to achieve the feat in the Championship nine years ago.The victory, which saw Hampshire bowl Middlesex out for 150 and 208, keeps them hanging on in the title race, and further boosts Dawson’s Ashes credentials. It was Hampshire’s fourth victory of the season, as they took 21 points away, while Middlesex looked destined to drop into the relegation zone with their solitary point.Kyle Abbott rattled through the Middlesex tail to finish the first innings, with two outstanding wickets falling inside five overs. Tom Helm shouldered his arms to a delivery which swung then seamed into his off stump before Josh de Caires was the victim of more inwards movement as the ball thudded into his pads.Middlesex, bowled out 269 behind, were asked to follow on, and are still without a Championship centurion this year.Second time around they survived almost 13 overs before collapsing.Dawson ended the first innings with 6 for 40, his best at the Ageas Bowl, bettering the 6 for 61 he had taken against Northamptonshire in the previous Championship match at home. Having been introduced in the 12th over in the first innings, James Vince threw him the ball in the 11th this time around before striking in his second to start a 21-ball avalanche of wickets.Dawson bookended the spell with Sam Robson edging to second slip and Mark Stoneman popping a reverse sweep off his glove to first slip.In between, Keith Barker had Pieter Malan failing to go through with a shot and toeing to mid-off and Max Holden brashly advancing and edging to first slip. There had also been time for Stoneman to be dropped at short leg as the visitors sagged from 40 without loss to 51 for 4.Ryan Higgins was proactive in dragging his side out of their malaise with regular advances at the spin bowlers and reverse sweeps on his way to eight boundaries. He reached a 59-ball fifty in a 78-run stand with John Simpson but fell for 54 when he reversed Dawson to first slip.Dawson brought up his 10th wicket in the match when Luke Hollman was well caught at wide mid-off by Mohammad Abbas. It was only the second 10-wicket haul of Dawson’s career, after his 10 for 139 against Essex last season. His 20 wickets this season have come at 17.75, half his career average.Simpson and de Caires had frustrated Hampshire for just over an hour either side of tea but the unlikely legspin of Nick Gubbins produced a delivery Shane Warne would have been proud of to castle de Caires – giving Gubbins a maiden Championship wicket. After Simpson fell for 49 when he strangled Fuller behind, that man Dawson rounded things off when Roland-Jones was struck on the pads and Helm was stumped. The six-for was his third in a row at the Ageas Bowl, having never previously taken more than five wickets in an innings on his home ground.

What do KKR and Rajasthan Royals need to do to qualify for the playoffs?

The losing team will have to depend on other results going in their favour

S Rajesh10-May-2023

Kolkata Knight Riders come into the game on the back of a tightly-fought win•Associated Press

Rajasthan Royals
Kolkata Knight Riders
Both Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders are identically placed with 10 points from 11 games, but in terms of momentum, they are at very different places in their campaigns. Royals have lost five of their last six matches; Knight Riders have won three of their last four. Also, both were involved in last-ball finishes in their most recent game, but while Royals made a mess of a match they should have definitely won against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Knight Riders came through in a tough chase against Punjab Kings.Whichever team loses on Thursday will be up against it, as they can finish only on a maximum of 14 points. That will leave them depending on several other results, for as many as eight teams can finish on 14 or more points, including four on 16 or more. Thus, the team losing this game will be at the mercy of several other results going in their favour.Even with 16 points (wins in each of their three remaining games), qualification isn’t assured for either of these teams, because progress could still come down to net run rates. If it does come down to that, Royals are better placed with a relatively healthy value so far, but for it to be of consequence, they will have to start adding to their points tally as well.Though Royals have the better NRR, Knight Riders have the advantage of two home games in hand, compared to just one for Royals. Neither team has made good use of home conditions, though – Knight Riders have won two of five, and Royals two of six – so Royals might actually be relieved to be playing away from home. For both teams, it is that stage of the tournament when any further slip-up could result in elimination.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

América captain Henry Martín will be sidelined for at least four weeks due to a lingering Achilles injury. The forward has been dealing with the issue for months and hasn’t been at full strength since the start of the year. His absence means he will miss Liga MX matches against Tigres and Pachuca, as well as the first leg of the Champions Cup quarterfinals against Cruz Azul.

It is unlikely that Martín will recover in time for the second leg on April 8, and his availability for América’s Liga MX match against Cruz Azul on April 12 (Matchday 15) remains uncertain. Manager André Jardine will have to wait and see if his captain can return in time.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

A few weeks ago, the forward consulted a specialist in Guadalajara, who recommended that he stop and undergo a month of rehabilitation to return fully recovered.

Martín currently has his leg immobilized with an orthopedic boot, and although he is receiving daily rehabilitation at Coapa, for now, he cannot engage in any football-related activities.

    WHAT VÍCTOR DÁVILA SAID

"A shame, we hope to have all our teammates available for the end of the tournament, but we're calm because the coach has handled it well. We've had rotations, and we have a wide enough squad to cover every position," Davila said of Martin's injury. "Each player has contributed good things in the attack, and André Jardine has managed the pieces well and distributed each player accordingly. What we expect is that Henry can recover properly, and it will be up to us to do our part and cover for his absence."

    DID YOU KNOW?

Injuries have impacted Martin's performance this season. The forward has only been able to play nine matches this year between Liga MX and the Champions Cup, where he has scored just once and registered three assists. Martín has a total of 115 goals in matches with América and is currently in fourth place on the list of the club's all-time top scorers.

Chelsea have found their answer to Salah and it’s not Cole Palmer

Chelsea continue to go from strength to strength, beating Southampton 5-1, and becoming the top scorers in the Premier League this season with 31 goals. Strikes from Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho secured the points for the Blues.

The visitors to the South Coast held 55% possession, taking 26 shots in the game, and creating 12 big chances. This victory for Chelsea took them to second in the Premier League, ahead of Arsenal now on goal difference, and seven points behind Liverpool, who lead the pack.

interestingly, Enzo Maresca made yet another tactical adjustment for this game to give Chelsea the edge, forming a new shape on the ball.

Maresca's tactical tweak

Chelsea set up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, making seven changes from the team that beat Aston Villa at the weekend. Rotation is something we have seen regularly from Maresca, often making 11 changes in cup competitions.

Against the Saints, Chelsea set up in a 2-2-5-1 on the ball, looking to overload Southampton’s back five in the last line with six forwards (five behind the striker). This allowed the Blues to still retain a man advantage in their build-up (2-2 base vs Southampton’s three-man front press), whilst also overloading their back line with six against five.

This tactical tweak from Maresca saw Chelsea record the highest xG total by a team away from home in the Premier League since these stats were recorded (2008/09). The Blues generated 5.29 xG, scoring five goals, and creating 12 big chances.

Chelsea managed to get Palmer, Joao Felix and Enzo Fernandez into dangerous areas on the ball, popping up in both wide and central zones, with the freedom to rotate in the half spaces and put their print on the game, which was seen by the performances of all three.

With Felix and Fernandez on either side of him, Palmer had the most freedom to roam into either side of the pitch, link play, and find himself in dangerous areas around the box, which saw him get his goal around the 76th minute, just before he was subbed off.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Cole Palmer's performance in numbers

So far this season, Palmer has made 16 appearances so far this season, with 14 of those appearances coming from this preferred central zone Maresca has found for him, rather than the right-wing, where he often played under Mauricio Pochettino last season. In those 16 games, the 22-year-old has scored nine goals and provided six assists, totalling 1,260 minutes.

Giving your best players the freedom to roam and pick up the ball in different areas of the pitch will always keep the opposition guessing, and when you have an asset like Palmer who isn’t just effective in the final third but is also brilliant at progressing play and helping in the build-up phase, this central role is absolutely perfect for him.

As always, the England international was decisive with his touches, creating chances for his teammates, and then getting his goal by ghosting into the box to finish a chance carved by Nkunku, who chopped inside and looked to slot the ball into the net, for Palmer to come and tap it in, making sure of the goal.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

One player he has been linking up with brilliantly on the right side of the field is Noni Madueke, who is showing signs of becoming Chelsea’s answer to Mohamed Salah.

Chelsea's very own Salah

Madueke has taken huge strides to become a key figure for the Blues this season, making 16 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals, providing two assists, and totalling 1,066 minutes.

Against Southampton, Madueke caught the eye with his goal and assist. He also had 58 touches, made a key pass, completed three crosses, succeeded with two of his four dribble attempts, and took seven shots, five of which were on target.

His overall impact on the game was key, as he was often the outlet in wide areas, finding 1v1 isolations with Ryan Manning and looking to make something happen by being direct.

When comparing the metrics of the players above, the standout difference is the output of Salah, who is scoring 0.79 goals, assisting 0.63 goals, and generating 0.66 xG per 90. His decision-making is at the elite level, compared to Madueke, who is still finding his way in this regard.

The similarities, however, are definitely there, as both are very direct on their right flank, making penetrative runs in behind, driving the ball into the penalty area (something Madueke is actually doing at an even higher rate than Salah this season), and most importantly, having a high shot-volume.

Both Madueke and Salah are often the outlet for their teams, who like to work the ball through the thirds, before finding them in these wide right zones, to isolate them 1v1 with a fullback, and give them the best possible platform to create something for either themselves, or their teammates.

The persistence and direct nature of Madueke is what makes him a nightmare for defenders, and if he continues to add extra G/A to his game, as he has shown signs of so far this season, he could well be Chelsea’s very own Salah.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ronaldo has 217 caps to his name and 135 goals, making him the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football. There is the promise of more appearances and strikes to come, with CR7 showing no sign of slowing down.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

He remains a talismanic presence for Portugal and Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, with it his intention to reach 1,000 career goals before giving any thought to retirement. With that target in mind, the plan is to grace the 2026 World Cup finals.

    WHAT ROBERTO MARTINEZ SAID

Portugal boss Martinez has told the of why he continues to call upon the evergreen five-time Ballon d’Or winner: “When I talk about a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, I also evaluate him on the basis of these three key aspects. His talent is indisputable; he is one of the best in the history of football. His experience is also unique: the only player to play in six European Championships and to have more than 200 international matches.

“But what stands out the most is his commitment. His passion for representing Portugal is contagious and motivates the entire team. He is not in the team today for what he has been, but for what he continues to be: the top scorer with 17 goals in the 21 games we have played in two years.”
