Mark Wood called up for England's Caribbean tour as replacement for Olly Stone

Fast bowler, who played the last of his 12 Tests in May, is expected to arrive in Barbados this weekend

George Dobell in Barbados17-Jan-2019Mark Wood has been called into the England Test squad as a replacement for Olly Stone.Wood, who played the last of his 12 Tests in May, recently impressed with his pace and fitness on the Lions tour to the UAE where he played in all three formats of the game. He is expected to arrive in Barbados this weekend.Stone, meanwhile, will return to England on Friday having been diagnosed with a stress fracture in the lower back.”I am really pleased to get the call and I do feel for Olly in these circumstances,” said Wood. “I am excited to be joining up with a team that’s flying at the minute. The lads, under Rooty [Joe Root], showed what they are capable of. They are in a great place going into the West Indies tour and hopefully a successful 2019.”Given his role in England’s ODI side, there might have been a temptation to rest Wood with a view to saving him for the World Cup. But he has made no secret of his continuing Test aspirations and has been preferred ahead of less experienced candidates such as Jamie Porter and Jamie Overton. While Wood’s Test record is modest – he has a bowling average of 41.73 – the England management feel his pace can prove an asset on flat pitches. And while that pace has not always lived up to its billing, the selectors feel he is currently fit enough to fulfil his potential.”I have put a lot of work into my game when I was away with Lions in the UAE during November and December and I took on board what the coaches were looking for while I was there,” he said. “We discussed the way I trained, being more efficient with my preparation and having a positive mindset.”I am enjoying myself and having fun with the game again. I am very clear about where I am at and I have a lot of clarity.”My body is good to go. I left the tour of the UAE in a really good place physically. I have had a clear thought process and mentally I feel fresh and excited to continue to improve on things I started with the Lions and play with a smile on my face.”The recall completes a happy few weeks for Wood, who got married in Northumberland in December, and had been on honeymoon in Paris prior to his unexpected call-up.”To hear from National Selector Ed Smith was a surprise but very satisfying,” he said. “It has been a very happy time for me and the family.”

Taylor rues New Zealand's lack of penetration

Taylor on how to tackle Kuldeep and Chahal

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor put his team’s series defeat at the hands of India down to the immense quality of their opposition. Even with India’s world-beating potential, New Zealand’s manner of capitulation has been uncharacteristic. Not since 2013 have they lost three successive games at home. Just earlier this month, they were comfortably beating Sri Lanka in all three formats, including a 3-0 sweep in the ODIs.”It has been a step-up in opposition, and at the same time, India winning the key moments has put us under pressure,” Taylor said. “We just weren’t able to capitalise when we were in a semi-dominant position. But credit to India – when they’ve batted, we haven’t been able to get wickets to put them under pressure. And vice-versa with the bat, with them getting early wickets and putting us under pressure.”With bat and ball, we haven’t been able to penetrate. We back ourselves to keep wickets with the bat, which we haven’t been able to. India have put us under pressure for long periods of time and got wickets at crucial times. And if you’re three or four down, with still 25 overs to go, you’re still a long way behind the game. We fought hard today, but it just wasn’t good enough.”Even with the series lost, the remaining games come with their share of stakes for New Zealand. Far from being dead rubbers, they are opportunities for the team to figure out combinations and try out new personnel, with the World Cup just months away.Getty Images

The experiments have even resulted in established players like Tim Southee sitting out. New Zealand’s spearhead in the previous World Cup, and one of the driving forces behind their run to the final, Southee has been on the wane in limited-overs cricket. Despite a poor series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand persisted with him for the first game of the ongoing series, but he has since sat out, relegated to being used on a rotational basis.”The World Cup is not far away, we’ve still got our combinations to sort out,” Taylor said. “I don’t know when the team is coming out. There’s a couple of new personnel coming in. Hopefully, they can bring in a new edge to the team.”I’m not sure what the team composition is for the next couple of matches, but I’m sure he’s [Southee] knocking on the door, he’s not far away.”Despite the defeat, New Zealand can take solace from having been able to negate the threat from India’s wristspinning duo far more effectively. New Zealand conceded six wickets for 82 runs to Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the first ODI, and six wickets for 97 runs in the previous game. On Monday, the duo returned combined figures of 2 for 90 in 17 overs. In fact, Kuldeep, New Zealand’s chief tormentor, with four wickets in each of the first two games, finished wicketless after eight overs.Taylor led that effort himself, batting brilliantly for 93 off 106 balls. Against Kuldeep and Chahal, Taylor collected 37 runs off 50 balls, including a four off each bowler. And though he slapped 25 runs off the 27 balls he faced from him, Taylor identified the returning Hardik Pandya as India’s MVP on the day.”I think you just got to be patient and know they [the spinners] are going to bowl good balls,” Taylor said. “You got to take it deep. If you’re losing wickets in those first two or three overs, they go and squeeze the new batsman and then it becomes very tough. You have to acknowledge that they’re going to bowl good balls and that you can catch up later on, with wickets in hand, and that’s what we did today. I thought we did that pretty well today for most of the time, but it still wasn’t good enough.”Hardik brings in a very nice balance to the Indian side. He came in and bowled well, used the change-ups and bumper very well, with the wind as well. We wanted to negate the spinners as much as possible. I thought we were able to do that, but Hardik came in and got some vital wickets and a good catch as well. Just the presence he brings into this Indian side, I think the balance of the side is a lot better when he’s in.”

'He's suffered' – Newcastle boss Eddie Howe addresses potential betting ban extension for Sando Tonali following FA charges

Eddie Howe claimed that Sandro Tonali has "suffered" enough while he addressed a potential extension of his betting ban following fresh FA charges.

Tonali is already serving a 10-month ban for violating betting regulations in Italy. The FA charged him with misconduct due to alleged breaches of its betting rules, adding to his existing predicament. The FA alleges that Tonali, who arrived at Newcastle from AC Milan for £55m ($69m) in July, engaged in betting activities on 50 occasions between August 12 and October 12, 2023, contravening its regulations.

AdvertisementGOALWHAT HOWE SAID

Speaking to reporters, Howe said: "I’ll be hugely disappointed if the ban’s extended. I certainly hope there are no further consequences for Sandro. He’s suffered, he’s sought help, he’s been very honest I think the best thing for Sandro would be to resume his career having taken his punishment and having learned a lot of lessons.”.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Tonali must respond to the charges by April 5, Howe admitted that there's no clarity on whether the FA would sanction a fresh ban on the player but hopes that the authorities would be lenient.

"I would say at the moment that’s a hope, but we don’t have specific clarity,” said Howe.

The manager emphasized that Tonali's challenges persisted even after his move to England, urging people to view his situation empathetically and address the root cause rather than resorting to punitive measures.

“We certainly hope strongly for Sandro that will be the case. The FA charges were no surprise to us. Sandro, from day one, cooperated and was very honest with the authorities about what he’d done and the issues that he had. He’s seeking help on a regular basis.

“Sandro’s illness didn’t stop when he moved from Italy to England; people should look at it that way, not: ‘Let’s throw the book at him and let’s punish him even further.’ I don’t think that gets to the root of the problem.

"If this was associated with another form of illness I think there’d be a lot more sympathy and understanding. You can’t quantify how much we’ve missed him. If the ban was extended we’d still be feeling that pain and so would Sandro because he wants to play football. He’s in a good place, doing well off the pitch and I think he should be allowed the chance to move forward with his career.”

Hal Steinbrenner Describes Yankees' Recent 'Good Meeting' With Juan Soto

The biggest bullet point on the New York Yankees' offseason checklist is retaining Juan Soto by giving him a new deal.

The Yankees took the first step by meeting with Soto on Monday in California, which included him speaking with chairman and managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner, team president Randy Levine, general manager Brian Cashman, manager Aaron Boone and senior adviser Omar Minaya. Steinbrenner said it was a "good meeting" that had "very honest back-and-forth dialogue." He didn't offer many other details. Soto told the Yankees how he thinks the team could improve in the future.

But it sounds like Steinbrenner and the rest of the Yankees front office hope to have Soto return to the Yankees lineup in 2025.

"Our fans really enjoyed having him in New York," Steinbrenner said, via ESPN's Jorge Castillo. "He's definitely a significant part of why we got to the World Series. I've got ears. I know what's expected of me. So, look, it's been a priority. We wouldn't have gone out to the West Coast if it wasn't."

Steinbrenner said he had "no idea" if the Yankees were confident in retaining Soto, but that "we'll be in the mix. I'll leave it at that."

The Yankees aren't the only team vying for a chance to sign Soto this offseason. Soto has met with the New York Mets, the Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. He is expected to meet with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers this week, and the Philadelphia Phillies are also interested in meeting with him.

Leeds seriously interested in signing 22 y/o for just over £1m in January

Leeds United are thought to be showing serious interest in completing the signing of a player who has been capped at youth international level, according to a new transfer update.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites continue to go marching on in the Championship this season, with Daniel Farke’s side securing a 2-0 victory away to Stoke City, thanks to two goals from Joel Piroe. They are top of the table on goal difference ahead of Sheffield United, as they continue to look like the front-runners to seal promotion back to the Premier League.

Various transfer rumours continue to emerge regarding potential business in the January transfer window, with Genoa and Wrexham believed to be eyeing a loan move for out-of-favour Leeds forward Patrick Bamford.

In terms of incoming, Emiliano Buendia is still being looked at as a transfer target, with the Whites interested in snapping him up for some time now. The Argentine has managed just 48 minutes of action in the Premier League for Aston Villa this season, so he may be keen on a new challenge and a reunion with Farke.

Meanwhile, Manchester City youngster James McAtee is also seen as a possible target for Leeds, with the attacking midfielder struggling to enjoy playing time under Pep Guardiola, despite their struggles. He has been on loan at Sheffield United in recent times, but a permanent move away to the Etihad could come to fruition.

Leeds eyeing signing of 22 y/o ace

Now, according to a fresh claim from Fotboll Direkt, Leeds are interested in signing Mjallby AIF goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist as early as January, with the 22-year-old linked with a move to the club last year, too.

The Whites and the 49ers could be able to snap him up for as little as £1.1m, with Mjallby sporting director Hasse Larsson discussing the situation, saying: “The only thing I can comment on is that we know there is interest.”

Not a huge amount will be known about Tornqvist, considering he is a young player who is plying his trade outside of one of Europe’s top leagues, but that’s not to sign he wouldn’t be a strong signing for Leeds.

It seems clear that the Whites are looking for more depth between the sticks and the Swede has pedigree as an international footballer, winning a combined seven caps across three different age groups for Sweden.

There is Premier League interest in Illan Meslier, according to recent reports, including from Manchester United, which would clearly heighten the need to bring in a new ‘keeper in the January transfer window.

Liverpool stopper Caoimhin Kelleher has been mentioned as an option to come in at Elland Road in 2025, which would represent an exciting piece of business, but in Tornqvist, who stands at 6ft 4, Leeds have a younger and cheaper option to the Liverpool man.

Man City considering £80m signing who’s rejecting new deals from his club

Manchester City are considering signing an £80 million “monster” defender this January, according to a new report.

Man City transfer news

A late 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday will have sent shockwaves through the City dressing room and will also have surprised manager Pep Guardiola, who now could have eyes on certain players he would like to bring in during January to get his side’s campaign back on track.

The midfield department is a key area that needs addressing, as the fact that Rodri has suffered a season-ending injury and İlkay Gündoğan looks to be struggling since his return, means City’s midfield has looked overrun at times.

It has emerged recently that the Blues are interested in signing Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich. The Germany star could be available for as little as £10 million in January, as his contract expires at the end of the season.

AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders is also a player who is on Man City’s transfer radar ahead of next month, and reports have revealed that they are preparing an offer of £40 million+ in a bid to persuade him to swap Milan for Manchester.

Not only is midfield a concern, but City also failed to replace Julian Alvarez in the summer, and that could be addressed this January, as they are weighing up a move to sign Randal Kolo Muani on loan from PSG. The Blues are showing genuine interest in a deal, and informal contacts have been made through intermediaries to get an understanding of the current situation.

Man City considering £80m Jarrad Branthwaite signing

It looks as though all areas of the team could be strengthened in January, as City also have eyes on a new centre-back. According to TBR Football, Manchester City are considering the signing of Jarrad Branthwaite this January.

The 22-year-old, who has been dubbed a “monster” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, has been at Goodison Park since January 2020, when he was snapped up by the Premier League side after impressing at Carlisle United as a young defender. Last season, Branthwaite established himself as part of Everton’s starting XI, playing 35 times in the Premier League and scoring three goals in the process, and his performances were recognised, as he won an international cap for England.

Branthwaite has continued to impress this season, despite missing the start of the campaign through injury, and he has now emerged on Man City’s radar. The report states that the Blues could look to make a move for the England defender in January, as they try to turn their fortunes around.

City are taking a “keen interest” in Branthwaite, who is under contract at Everton until 2027 and has rejected the chance of signing a new contract at the club. The prospective new Everton owners, The Friedkin Group, hope their ambitions for the future will persuade the central defender to stay, but have made no progress yet.

Manchester United have been long-term admirers of Branthwaite, while Arsenal and Chelsea are also interested in signing the young defender, but City’s plan to make a move in January could see them win the race ahead of their city rivals. It would be a costly transfer, as Everton value the defender in the region of £80 million.

Rangers and Koppen now targeting players from one country ahead of January

da poker: Rangers and technical director Nils Koppen are believed to be targeting players in a specific country ahead of the January transfer window, according to a fresh update.

Latest Rangers news

da dobrowin: The Gers will feel that they have turned a corner of some sorts under Philippe Clement, following a slight improvement in results in recent weeks, allowing themselves to gain a little ground on Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race. A 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham in the Europa League was also a good result.

While the Hoops still have a big lead at the top of the table, Rangers have at least managed to narrow the gap to nine points, and they will hope to gradually close in on their rivals as the weeks and months pass.

For that to happen, reinforcements could be needed in the January window, however, giving Clement the extra depth that he craves in his squad. Standard Liege youngster Isaac Price is one player who has been linked with a move to Ibrox, with the 21-year-old starting 16 matches in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League this season.

Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has emerged as more of a high-profile option for Rangers, too, having struggled to be a key player under Enzo Maresca this season, following his move from Leicester City in the summer. The Englishman could be a great signing for Clement, adding genuine quality in the middle of the park.

Rangers and Koppen eyeing players from Belgium ahead of January

According to a fresh claim from Ibrox News, Rangers will turn their attention to signing players from Belgium ahead of January, as they look to bolster Clement’s squad.

It is stated that Koppen is “gathering information about potential targets” in the country, although the Gers’ technical director “does not have anything imminent in the pipeline” currently.

Philippe Clement

This has to be seen as encouraging for Rangers, in terms of it being clear that they are showing an element of intent ahead of the January window opening next week.

Granted, there are no specific players who are mentioned, but it suggests that Koppen is working hard to bring in individuals who can enhance the Gers’ hopes of pulling off a miraculous comeback in the title race. Clement himself has hinted at a “hectic” January taking place, too, saying:

“It’s always a hectic period because players start to doubt whether to stay or not, there are a lot of talks from us with players and their agents to convince them about things.”

It will be interesting to see if Koppen’s Belgian scouting mission comes to anything, but Price could be an excellent choice to come in as a long-term option with lots of ability.
