Imagine him & Browne: Sunderland can land the "finished article" for £0

Sunderland have finally confirmed another new signing this summer, as Republic of Ireland international Alan Browne joins up with Regis Le Bris' group ahead of the forthcoming Championship campaign.

The 29-year-old has bags of experience at the level, having been a loyal servant to former employers Preston North End for a staggering decade, with a fresh new challenge now coming his way.

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

This could be an ingenious free agent swoop, as Sunderland were crying out for more seasoned heads last season when the wheels started to come off, with another second-tier veteran reportedly following Browne in through the door.

Sunderland hold talks with EFL star

According to a report by the Northern Echo earlier this week, alongside previously being in talks with their new Irish recruit before he officially signed on the dotted line, Sunderland have also held conversations with former Sheffield United man Oliver Norwood over a summer switch to the Stadium of Light.

It's stated in the article that the Le Bris was keen on adding calm and experienced heads to the dressing room this transfer window, with Norwood able to offer that in spades, alongside the ex-Preston midfielder.

It has been reported that Sunderland's interest might have cooled down on Norwood after the capture of Browne however – according to football journalist Michael Graham – but the new French boss wouldn't turn his nose up at the prospect of having two second-tier experts at his disposal if possible.

When still on the books at Bramall Lane, Norwood would oversee two promotions up to the Premier League, with a mind-boggling four on his career resume overall.

With the Northern Irishman's knowledge of the division evident, signing the 33-year-old could prove to be another cheap masterstroke on the end of the Black Cats, as the pair could strike up a fantastic partnership to steer a youthful Sunderland side back to the top positions in the league.

What Norwood and Browne can offer Sunderland

As can be seen with this stylish finish from Norwood back in 2018, the ageing midfielder can offer lots all over the pitch for his new employers if signed, whether that be racing forward to join in with attacks or helping out with defensive duties.

Amassing a ridiculous 381 Championship appearances to date, with 25 goals and 48 assists managed along the way, it's almost a certainty that the former Blades man will be a reliable and dependable figure that Le Bris can rely upon in moments of deep crisis or tension.

Browne has accumulated similarly impressive numbers across his career, as can be seen looking at the table above, with all of those coming donning a Preston jersey.

The 29-year-old will quickly need to grow accustomed to his new surroundings, therefore, with Le Bris no doubt a fan of Browne's adaptability across the midfield spots too, as the Republic of Ireland international can play in an attacking midfield role or as a defensive option when needed.

It was from the attacking midfield spot last season where the ex-Preston number eight wreaked most of his havoc though, helping himself to four goals and four assists from league action.

Browne could act as an experienced head for Bellingham to lean off of subsequently, with Norwood – who has been dubbed the "finished article" in the division by former Blade, Carl Asaba – also pushing the likes of Dan Neil and Pierre Ekwah as a utility figure in a more holding role.

Sunderland fans will be encouraged by the players that look to be joining the building ahead of next season, praying that everything clicks into place and Le Bris can push the Black Cats back into the promotion reckoning.

USWNT player ratings vs Iceland: Emma Hayes' superstar attack even deeper, as Alyssa Thompson and Jaedyn Shaw make post-Olympic statements

The USWNT beat Iceland 3-1, and proved once again how lethal this team can be, displaying depth even when it isn't at full strength

This is a message to the rest of the world: good luck. When facing the U.S. women's national team, it's always going to be a long night. Their attack is too deep. Their forwards are too talented. Even when the now-famous Triple Espresso is down a shot, there's essentially nothing you can really do.

That was the big story of Thursday's U.S. women's national team win over Iceland, a 3-1 triumph in Austin, Texas. It wasn't one individual player. It wasn't even one individual nicknamed trio. No, this was about depth, about the USWNT sending wave after wave at a team until they finally broke under an onslaught of unmatched quality.

Some of that quality came from Sophia Smith, who ultimately scored a stunning exclamation point of a goal in the game's final moments to build on her Olympic breakout. Some came from Jaedyn Shaw, who, like Smith, came off the bench to dribble through multiple Iceland defenders to rebound from her lack of Olympic breakout and help erase a 1-1 score. And then there was Alyssa Thompson, back in the USWNT after missing out this summer, striking a stunner of her own by curling a shot to the far post to open the scoring early on – her first international goal.

"We have so much young talent coming in," Smith said, "and for Jaedyn and Alyssa to score … for them to have the confidence to play their game and put the ball in the back of the net, it shows a lot about who they are as players. I think we have a very bright future."

You never know who the star will be. It changes from night to night. Even with Trinity Rodman absent, there's no dropoff. There are too many superstars – or superstars in the making – on this team, so many options for Emma Hayes to experiment with. It seems like she can't go wrong with any of them, and that competition between them will only make them stronger. Shaw, who missed the USWNT Olympic gold medal run because of injury, summarized the moment.

“It was a really tough month for me, but it was also the best month of my life," she said, looking back the Paris Games, "and I really learned a lot from it. It made me hungrier to come back and produce the same, if not more.”

Production is what the USWNT was all about Thursday night, keeping Hayes unbeaten in 11 games with the USWNT. How's that for a start to a job?

So, again, good luck to everyone else. Thursday night was a reminder of what we learned this summer: this USWNT is a freight train, no matter who leads the way on any given night.

GOAL rates the USWNT's players from Q2 Stadium..

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Alyssa Naeher (6/10):

Not much she could have done on the Iceland goal, which was fantastic. Made a few good stops on Iceland's other chances as the visitors certainly gave it a go.

    Jenna Nighswonger (7/10):

Very much locked in to that left-back spot, and for good reason. Was strong for the USWNT, particularly when she got forward, and had one good tackle, too.

    Emily Sonnett (7/10):

Big night for her as she got her 100th cap. Was generally solid defensively, too, to commemorate her big night.

    Naomi Girma (6/10):

Stepped into the attack a bit more than usual, particularly early. Some might say she could have been closer on Iceland's goal but, realistically, that shot doesn't go in 99 times out of 100. It happens.

    Emily Fox (7/10):

You know exactly what you're going to get every time Fox takes the field. Stayed a bit deeper this time around, which suits her game perfectly.

    Midfield

    Sam Coffey (6/10):

Given the profiles of the two midfielder she plays with, Coffey is asked to do so much as that lone No. 6. She did it well, freeing up Lindsey Horan and Rose Lavelle to do what they do best.

    Lindsey Horan (7/10):

Very smart on the ball as always, and came oh-so-close to a free-kick goal just before halftime. Credited with the assist on Thompson's goal but, let's be honest, that was all Thompson. Overall, though, a composed performance in which she really make a difference with her pressing, in particular.

    Rose Lavelle (6/10):

Was partly at fault for Iceland's wondergoal, as she was beaten in the seconds leading up to it. Still, this is Lavelle we're talking about. Maximum effort and plenty of good moments creatively, even if none quite came off.

  • Imagn

    Attack

    Mal Swanson (5/10):

Was really roughed up by Iceland's defenders, particularly in the first half. Couldn't quite get going due to that physicality, but she still had some good moments.

    Lynn Williams (5/10):

Never really broke through as that central striker. Clearly offers a lot, particularly as a supersub, but this just wasn't quite her night.

    Alyssa Thompson (8/10):

An absolutely stunning goal, and that might be putting it lightly. The 19-year-old got a taste of USWNT life under Vlatko Andonvoski, but this felt like her true arrival. Based on that finish, this could be the start of something spectacular.

  • Getty

    Subs & Manager

    Casey Krueger (7/10):

Came in to represent Fox at right-back. Obviously, a bit more attacking than the Arsenal star, which added a bit of life to the second half. Credited with the assist on Shaw's stunner.

    Jaedyn Shaw (9/10):

Interesting to see her replace Horan, meaning she played as more of a midfielder than an attacker. Doesn't matter where she plays, though. Her goal was brilliant, and it was the game-winner the USWNT needed.

    Yazmeen Ryan (7/10):

A well-deserved first cap for the Gotham star, who really has blossomed as a player over these last two seasons. Had a scary collision with Iceland's goalkeeper, but was able to walk it off.

    Hal Hershfelt (7/10):

Another debutant. Replaced Coffey as that deep-lying midfielder. Certainly brought some energy as the USWNT made bulk changes.

    Sophia Smith (9/10):

With the USWNT attack struggling a bit, Hayes turned to her star striker. She scored a star-striker type of goal: an absolute missile from outside the box to seal the win.

    Emma Hayes (7/10):

Got just about everything right. Gave her new players chances and got her stars in to win the game. All according to the plan.

Arsenal set sights on unlikely £52 million Euro 2024 hero who Arteta loves

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is a big fan of an "unlikely Euro 2024 hero", with the north Londoners now eyeing a move for him this summer.

Edu and Arteta seeking four key signings for Arsenal

Not counting the permanent deal for David Raya, it is believed that sporting director Edu is in the market for a new backup 'keeper among other positions, with a new defender, midfielder and forward also on the agenda at London Colney (Simon Collings).

Arteta personally wants Arsenal to sign £30 million Jesus alternative

The Spaniard thinks he’s ideal.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 9, 2024

The Gunners are closing in on their second major signing of the summer after Raya, as they look to tick the addition of a new defender off their list. Bologna starlet Riccardo Calafiori is on the verge of joining Arsenal, according to Fabrizio Romano, with the Italian already agreeing personal terms last week.

With the likes of Mohamed Elneny departing, and Thomas Partey widely tipped to follow the Egyptian, a new midfielder is thought to be high on Edu's agenda over the coming weeks.

Partey has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia and the Turkish Super Lig, as the 31-year-old enters the final 12 months of his contract. If he does end up moving on to pastures new, Arsenal will need a replacement and alternative/partner to star man Declan Rice in the engine room.

A few very interesting names have cropped up as targets in the past few weeks, via reports in the media. Arteta reportedly admires Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, with former Everton CEO Keith Wyness claiming Arsenal have held discussions over signing Everton's Amadou Onana.

Edu has also been offered PSG midfielder Manuel Ugarte, according to GiveMeSport, so the Premier League title hopefuls aren't exactly short of options.

Arsenal targeting Mikel Merino who Arteta really likes

According to a report by The Athletic, former Newcastle United ace Mikel Merino has attracted attention from the Emirates.

The Real Sociedad midfielder, interestingly a teammate of Zubimendi's, has been called "Spain's unlikely Euro 2024 hero" by journalist Pol Ballus and scored his country's quarter-final winner against Germany to send them into the semis – which they also won on Tuesday night at the expense of France.

The 28-year-old, whose contract includes a £52 million release clause, has not gone unnoticed in north London. The Athletic claims Arteta really likes Merino for his talent and physicality with Arsenal now targeting him.

At club level, Merino chalked up 45 appearances for Sociedad in all competitions last season – scoring eight goals and bagging a further five assists. His disciplinary record is perhaps something to watch out for, though, as the Spaniard also totalled 14 bookings in that time.

How to fix Real Madrid: Six problems Carlo Ancelotti must solve to get European champions back on track

Los Blancos have fallen behind Barcelona in La Liga and have not looked like potential Champions League winners as yet

Real Madrid were meant to win it all this season. How could you add Kylian Mbappe to a La Liga and Champions League-winning side and get better? A super-team had been assembled at Santiago Bernabeu, and with age on their side, they had the potential to become an unstoppable force over the next half-decade or so.

In reality, though, it hasn't been that easy. Madrid haven't been worse with Mbappe, but they haven't quite convinced either. Losses to Lille in the Champions League and Barcelona in La Liga highlighted some key issues in the side. Meanwhile, the retirement of Toni Kroos is proving to be far more significant than many might have expected before the season.

Madrid are now nine points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona – albeit with a game in hand – and find themselves flirting with the possibility of missing out on automatic qualification for the last 16 of the revamped Champions League. Alarm bells aren't ringing yet, but things are looking a little shaky in the Spanish capital.

Fortunately, there are identifiable problems and workable solutions as Carlo Ancelotti looks to get Madrid back on track…

Getty Images SportMake Mbappe do more

Let's make something clear: Mbappe is not having any problems putting the ball in the back of the net. In 14 games for Madrid, he has scored eight and assisted two – a fine mark whichever way things are spun. There remains a prevailing sense, however, that the summer signing really should be doing more.

In truth, it's been a problem for a while with the France captain. Mbappe is good for 40+ goals every season, but somehow feels incomplete as a player. He is, in effect, the same inside forward he was at 20 years old. There's been no development here, no marked improvement in any one specific area of his game.

That concern hasn't really gone away since he arrived in Madrid. For all intents and purposes, Mbappe is doing the the same things now as he did at Paris Saint-Germain, albeit he is starting more centrally to allow for the presence of Vinicius Jr. He still often drifts out to the left, and occupies the wrong spaces, leading to overcrowding.

Off the ball, he is worse. Mbappe has never really been a great runner, and for Madrid, that trend has only continued, as he has regularly been seen to be giving up after his team lose the ball. He doesn't have to press relentlessly, but Ancelotti needs to get Mbappe to do some sort of defensive work for the team to function.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportBring the best out of Bellingham

Perhaps the player whose role has changed the most following Mbappe's arrival is Jude Bellingham. The England international was magnificent during his first season in Madrid, even though the goals rather dried up in the second half of the season after his record-breaking start. That was, mostly, due to a slight tweak in position; Bellingham didn't get into advanced areas as much as the campaign wound down.

This season, the goals have disappeared altogether. Bellingham is yet to find the net for Madrid, and has instead been operating as more of a peripheral presence in the attack. Clearly with Mbappe and Vinicius ahead of him, Bellingham's attacking output was likely to drop, but few could have predicted such a steep decline in his goal-scoring numbers.

The appeal of Bellingham is that he can do a bit of everything. He is, in effect, the perfect modern box-to-box midfielder. But he is also 21, and he still makes mistakes as a footballer. Sometimes he tries to do too much, or gets too emotional. That, coupled with the lack of goals, has led to serious questions being asked of Bellingham by some sections of the media.

Ancelotti, then, needs to find a solution that gets Bellingham more involved around the penalty area while still allowing Vinicius and Mbappe space to weave their magic. There's no obvious way around it, but the Italian has the experience to find a fix.

Getty Images SportTighten up the defence

While Madrid's all-star forward line has come under the most scrutiny since the start of the season, a report by over the weekend insisted that Ancelotti sees Madrid's defence as the biggest problems area in his team. And while the very best sides defend as a team, there is no doubt that the Blancos' backline has not been at its best level so far in 2024-25.

Madrid's defenders have made far too many individual mistakes already this season, leading to a team that generally dominates possession conceding 15 goals in 14 games. Ferland Mendy, for one, was far too easily done by Lamine Yamal in El Clasico. Antonio Rudiger, so solid last year, has been well short of his best and susceptible to the long ball. Eder Militao, meanwhile, still seems to be finding his feet after missing a year with an ACL tear. And at right-back, the problems run even deeper…

AFPFind a reliable right-back

When Dani Carvajal suffered a gruesome knee injury at the end of October, Madrid were left with a massive problem. Carvajal had enjoyed an excellent 2023-24 campaign, one that saw him finish fourth in the Ballon d'Or rankings. Despite his age and declining athleticism, Madrid still had an elite full-back at their disposal.

Without him, they now look a little lost. Lucas Vazquez is the in-house replacement preferred by Ancelotti so far, and in some ways, he's a decent stopgap. Vazquez's work-rate can never be criticised, and he certainly offers plenty of attacking thrust. Still, he is very much a converted right-winger – and often plays like one. His nous in one-on-ones is often lacking, and he was certainly at fault for both Borussia Dortmund goals in Madrid's eventual comeback win last time out in the Champions League.

The easy solution here, for now, might be to switch Militao to right-back – a position he has played in for Brazil – and drop Aurelien Tchouameni into a central defensive role. Long-term, there might just be a certain Liverpudlian available this summer…

Asking for advice, Erik?! Phil Parkinson spotted deep in conversation with Man Utd boss Ten Hag as Wrexham boss is honoured at FWA Northern Managers’ Awards dinner

Under-pressure Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag had a long conversation with Wrexham coach Phil Parkinson as they collected awards on Sunday.

Ten Hag picked up a prize at the Football Writers Association (FWA) Northern Managers Awards for leading United to win the FA Cup over arch rivals Manchester City last season. Parkinson was also honoured at the dinner for inspiring Wrexham to League One, the Red Dragons' second-successive promotion.

Ten Hag, who enjoyed a much-needed win over Brentford the day before the awards ceremony, was seated next to Parkinson, who was also celebrating after Paul Mullin had fired his side to a 1-0 win at Rotherham. And the two managers were seen deep in conversation throughout the dinner.

WHAT TEN HAG SAID

"I can say as I have some experience, it's not so easy to win titles, all the levels in English football are very competitive, to win a title demands huge sacrifice, sacrifice with your family but also sacrifice to get the team doing what you want," Ten Hag said in his speech. "You don't do this alone. You need good players, without good players, any manager is poor. Players can't do it without coaching so thanks also to my coaches, we did an incredible job to win this FA Cup."

Pep Guardiola also won a prize for retaining the Premier League title with Manchester City although the Catalan was unable to attend the ceremony, as his side were in action against Wolves. Guardiola gave an acceptance speech via video. Jurgen Klopp was honoured for leading Liverpool to win the Carabao Cup in his final season, but he was also not in attendance.

Even worse than Dalot: 3/10 Man Utd star now "needs a break from the XI"

Ruben Amorim’s polarising tactical set-up is reliant on fluent and efficient wing-backs. Establishing a winning formula down the flanks has proved difficult for the Manchester United manager in his year at the Old Trafford helm, though.

Though the right-sided pairing of Bryan Mbeumo is an imperfect combination, there is much to like about this front-footed and dynamic dimension.

The same can’t be said for Patrick Dorgu down the left, who Amorim admitted last week creates an air of “anxiety” when on the ball at the moment.

Harsh words, but not without the ring of truth. The Red Devils are short on effective options on the left, with Diogo Dalot the stand-in. However, he too leaves much to be desired, as was clear as United secured a from-behind Premier League win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Dalot flatters to deceive at Selhurst Park

Dalot has struggled under Amorim’s wing, having found tough work in adapting to the new system. Content creator Liam Canning actually said a month ago that the Portuguese defender is “becoming a worry long term”, given that he “doesn’t look like he suits the wing back role”.

Such words rung true against Palace at the weekend, albeit with the intensity and aggression improving after the break.

While content creator Adam Joseph feels the left side is “completely toothless”, there are signs of life.

Dalot did win eight duels on the afternoon, as per Sofascore, succeeding with his one tackle and making six ball recoveries besides. But he also failed with two attempted crosses and didn’t create a single chance, illustrating the on-the-ball imbalances that Amorim has yet to iron out.

However, given Dorgu has been so unconvincing and the alternative options are few and far between, it’s unlikely we will see any drastic upheaval in the immediate future.

But Amorim may look to chop and change another part of his backline.

Amorim must drop 3/10 Man Utd star

There has been a promising increase in levels at Manchester United this season, but Amorim still has much ground to cover before his tenure can be confirmed as a success.

Going forward, he may need to make a few tough calls, and one of those calls centres on dropping Leny Yoro, who has struggled of late and must be pulled to the bench.

Yoro, 20, is considered one of the most talented centre-backs in the world, and United scored a coup when beating Liverpool and Real Madrid to his signature.

However, he’s been out of form this season, and journalist Nathan Salt believes he “needs a break from the XI to restore some confidence”.

Yoro was at fault for the penalty which Jean-Philippe Mateta dispatched – controversially – to put the hosts 1-0 up before half-time. The Manchester Evening News gave him a 3/10 match rating after an error-strewn performance that saw him hooked before the hour mark.

The timing is at least fortuitous. Lisandro Martinez has completed his long-anticipated return from injury, and the Butcher at his best will be sure to nail down a starting berth in Amorim’s team.

Yoro is strong on the ball and a progressive passer, ranking among the top 14% of positional peers in the Premier League this season for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, but he’s also shorn of confidence.

United fans must retain their excitement over the dynamic, promising defender, who has what it takes to become one of the very best in the business. But, for now, he needs to put the brakes on his campaign.

After the match, content creator Adam Joseph acknowledged that the Frenchman is “going through a tough period in his development”, but that he was “brilliant last season” and will bounce back soon.

This is true, but, for now, Amorim would be wise to take the young centre-half out of the firing line, especially now that Martinez is match fit once again.

Ireland allrounder Curtis Campher is set to undergo surgery on his ankle, ruling him out of his team’s World Cup Super League series in the Netherlands next month.Campher, who was born in Johannesburg and grew up in South Africa, made his Ireland debut last year against England after opting to put his Irish passport to good use, and made half-centuries from No. 7 in his first two appearances while chipping in with the ball. He has since become a key member of the ODI side, offering balance as a seam-bowling allrounder in the middle order. He has been managing an ankle problem for some time, and left the field during the Ireland Wolves’ first unofficial ODI against Netherlands A last week after it flared up again, three overs into his spell. He will now undergo surgery, with Mark Rausa, Ireland’s head of sport science, physiotherapy and medical services, suggesting that he could be fit to play some part in the home internationals against South Africa and Zimbabwe later this summer.”Curtis will have surgery for an ankle impingement issue that he has been managing for a prolonged period of time,” Rausa said. “During last week’s Wolves game at Oak Hill, his ankle concern had progressed to the point where he could no longer continue bowling.”He immediately had the ankle scanned and saw a specialist today for assessment, where it was agreed the best course of action was surgery to hopefully resolve the issue long-term. Curtis will then begin his rehab immediately after in preparation for the summer home international series.”
