Offer ready: Arsenal target last-gasp move for £70m Nketiah upgrade

Arsenal have got their Premier League campaign off to a brilliant start this season thanks to impressive back-to-back wins against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa.

However, with their next fixture scheduled for Saturday lunchtime, the focus of many fans has switched to the club's transfer dealings, and so far, there has been less to get excited about on that front.

Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino remain the only officially announced additions to the first team this summer. However, Edu Gaspar and Co have been busy working on several departures, including Eddie Nketiah's reported £30m move to Crystal Palace.

Interestingly, the Englishman's proposed move to South London and the hole in the squad he'll leave may have inspired the board to act, as recent reports have now linked the club with a player who'd be his dream replacement.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Transfers, Arsenal are very interested in Brighton & Hove Albion youngster Evan Ferguson.

In fact, the report claims that the Gunners are now lining up a move for the 19-year-old and 'are ready to make an offer to Brighton' for his services.

However, there are two significant barriers to the North Londoners getting their man: the £70m fee the Seagulls want and the interest from title rivals Manchester City.

Brighton's Evan Ferguson

In all, it could prove to be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Ferguson's sky-high potential, it is worth pursuing, especially as he'd be a dream upgrade on Nketiah.

How Ferguson compares to Nketiah

Okay, so the first thing to clear up is that at his age and within the context of Nketiah being sold to Palace, Arsenal will not be looking towards Ferguson to be a starter this season, or even next season, regardless of the price.

Evan Ferguson celebrates scoring for Brighton & Hove Albion.

Yes, he would likely feature in plenty of games and get plenty of chances to show his quality, but it seems unlikely that Arteta would throw a teenager who hasn't got a ton of first-team experience into the deep end, especially with a title on the line.

However, the young "superstar", as dubbed by former professional Danny Murphy, could be the perfect man to replace the Gunners' number 14 and become an excellent backup striker for the next couple of years while he continues to develop into the world-class centre-forward so many seem to believe he's destined to be.

With that said, how does his output from the last two campaigns stack up against the player he could be set to replace?

Interestingly, while he was slightly less effective last season, he was far more so in the campaign prior. Overall, he's racked up 16 goals and four assists in 61 appearances in that time, equating to a respectable average of a goal involvement every 3.05 games.

In contrast, the Palace-bound dynamo scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 76 appearances in the same period, meaning he maintained a slightly worse average of a goal involvement every 3.8 games.

While you cannot extrapolate too much from this, it is encouraging to see that the young Irishman has already outperformed the Arsenal ace in recent seasons, despite playing for a weaker team and being significantly younger.

Ultimately, if Arteta wants to ensure his next backup striker is better than Nketiah today and has the potential to be a first-teamer in the future, then he could do a lot worse than Ferguson. Therefore, Edu and Co should do their best to get this deal over the line.

Australian Troy Cooley set to be appointed NCA fast-bowling coach

Hrishikesh Kanitkar, SS Das, Sitanshu Kotak to be batting coaches while board considers rolling out exclusive contracts for fast bowlers

Edited PTI story17-Nov-2021The BCCI is set to appoint Australia’s Troy Cooley as fast-bowling coach, and former India batters Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Shiv Sunder Das, along with Sitanshu Kotak, as the batting coaches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.Former India and Mumbai legspinner Sairaj Bahutule will be the spin-bowling coach.Cooley is being roped in with an aim to create the country’s next generation of fast bowlers. A reputed fast-bowling coach, Cooley was with the England set-up during their historic 2005 Ashes campaign in which their fast bowlers, on home soil, became a nightmare for the Australian batters. The success of Andrew Flintoff, Matthew Hoggard, Simon Jones and Steve Harmison was in part attributed to Cooley. Cooley was then roped in by Cricket Australia the following year and he worked with the national team till the 2010-11 season after which he joined the board’s Centre of Excellence in Brisbane.”I would say one of the biggest success for both Sourav [Ganguly, the BCCI president] and Jay [Shah, the secretary] is to convince Troy Cooley to work with India’s next batch of pacers at the National Cricket Academy,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on the condition of anonymity. “We are hearing that BCCI is giving Cooley a three-year contract and he will closely co-ordinate with the NCA head of cricket, VVS Laxman.”BCCI set to introduce exclusive fast-bowlers’ contracts
The BCCI is planning on how to prepare the next crop of fast bowlers and one of the decisions set to be taken is an ‘Exclusive Young Pacers Contract’.It is understood that Ganguly, Shah, head coach Rahul Dravid and NCA’s new head VVS Laxman are trying to devise a contract that is exclusive and different from the central contract. It is learnt that Cooley and Laxman will hand-pick 10 young fast bowlers who are currently not in the national reckoning or do not have central contracts. These young pacers will be selected from the junior and first-class set-ups and handed ‘BCCI fast bowlers’ contract.’ They will be evaluated by Dravid and Laxman to see if they can be fast-tracked into the pathways team (India A) and then the senior side.Kanitkar, Das appointed batting coaches
Kanitkar and Das are back in the NCA fold in their familiar role as batting coaches, along with Kotak, who is set to travel to South Africa with the India A team. The three fielding coaches at the NCA will be Subhadeep Ghosh, T Dilip and Munish Bali. Dilip is currently working with the India senior team for the series against New Zealand while Ghosh will travel to South Africa with the A team. Bali is expected to work with the India men’s U-19 side. Both Ghosh and Das were part of India Women’s support staff for the multi-format tour of Australia in September-October.

Arsenal make approach to sign £162,000-a-week star for Arteta after U-turn

Arsenal have made an approach to sign a £162,000-per-week forward for manager Mikel Arteta, coming after a U-turn behind-the-scenes.

Arteta tipped to sign new striker at Arsenal despite Havertz form

Kai Havertz resurrected his debut campaign at Arsenal after a slow start to life at the Emirates last term, impressing in a makeshift forward role and ending 2023/2024 with 14 goals and seven assists in all competitions.

Havertz has been praised for his Arsenal form since the turn of the year, which could be worrying for striker Gabriel Jesus, following the Brazilian's lacklustre 23/24 campaign blighted by fitness issues and overall lack of form.

Jesus missed 16 games for Arsenal through injury last season, all while Havertz grew into his role under Arteta and earned plaudits. To make matters more concerning for Jesus, there are still reports that Arsenal could look to sign a striker before summer deadline day.

Arteta is rumoured to be keen on a striking partner for Havertz, while the Spaniard also reportedly wants an alternative to Jesus going forward. Arsenal did attempt a deal to sign RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko earlier this window, but to no avail, with the Slovenian penning an extension at his current club instead.

As per various reports in the press, alternatives to Sesko since then have ranged from Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres to cheaper options like Ajax forward Brian Brobbey.

Another ambitious target comes in the form of Napoli star Victor Osimhen, with the Nigerian widely tipped to leave the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium if interested sides can reach an agreement with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Victor Osimhen

Arsenal have been backed to make an offer for Osimhen, while journalist Ben Jacobs told GiveMeSport earlier this year that the Gunners have a chance.

“We still can't rule out Arsenal in the race for Osimhen," said Jacobs in February.

"It’s also true that PSG have Osimhen very, very high on their list of targets and can move in the market because they will free up money due to Kylian Mbappe’s departure. I'm still told by sources that Osimhen’s priority is the Premier League, which is encouraging for Chelsea and Arsenal. He would be looking for about £250,000 per week, which Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG would all be happy to pay.”

Arsenal make new Osimhen approach after U-turn behind-the-scenes

Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport have an update on Arsenal's links to Osimhen, claiming they've re-joined the race, with Arteta's side seemingly pulling a U-turn after cooling their interest.

They also state that Arsenal have made an approach to sign Osimhen, who is apparently on around £162,000-per-week at Napoli. The former Lille star's release clause is set at around £109 million, so it remains to be seen if Edu Gaspar and co deem a price anywhere near this amount worth paying.

Meanwhile, they face competition from PSG and Chelsea, who are also in the picture for Osimhen. Former Napoli boss Rudi Garcia has described his ex-star as a "crazy driving force", and this is backed by his excellent Serie A goalscoring record.

Warwickshire bring in Chris Benjamin as wicketkeeper back-up

Warwickshire have signed Chris Benjamin on a Rookie contract until the end of the season.Benjamin, a 22-year-old keeper-batter, has impressed on trial in the 2nd XI and captained the side to victory in the 2nd XI Twenty20 Trophy. He made 149 from just 66 balls against Glamorgan and claimed five catches in the semi-final against Middlesex.South Africa-born, he played two first-class matches for Durham MCCU in 2019.While Michael Burgess, who has just signed a two-year contract extension which will keep him at Edgbaston until at least the end of 2023, is established as the first-team keeper in all formats, Warwickshire have previously not had another regular keeper in the squad. Vikai Kelley, an 18-year-old who kept in one T20 game in 2020, remains a long-term prospect, but the club were keen to have a readymade option should Burgess suffer injury.Benjamin also has the advantage of being an option as a specialist batter.”Chris is a hard-hitting, right-handed batsman capable of providing real power at the top of the order,” Ian Westwood, the Warwickshire 2nd XI coach, said. “He captained the Second XI to the T20 trophy last week and, with Vikai Kelley injured, kept wicket in the last few games of the competition. We will be working hard with him on his keeping in the months ahead.”He has spent a lot of time with us this season and has shown the qualities we look for on and off the field. He has fitted in really well and fully deserves his Rookie contract. He will be with us for the rest of the year so has a chance to push for a longer-term deal.”There was a first view of Che Simmons for many Warwickshire supporters on Wednesday night, too. Simmons, a 17-year-old Barbados-born fast bowler with a UK passport, acted as 12th man at Edgbaston as Birmingham pulled off a 10-wicket victory over Yorkshire.Although Simmons is expected to return to Barbados in the coming days, Warwickshire hope he will be back in a few months having made a positive impression on trial. While it is understood that CWI has not given up on plans to keep him, he is expected to complete his education in Birmingham and looks to have many of the qualities to develop into a professional cricketer.

Adam Rossington's captain's innings lifts Northamptonshire from difficulty

Northamptonshire 232 for 5 (Rossington 66*) vs GloucestershireAdam Rossington’s unbeaten 66 rescued Northamptonshire as the LV= Insurance Championship returned on a grey, cool day at Bristol with the visitors making 232 for 5 having lost the toss.Northants were reduced to 147 for 5 before captain Rossington made his fourth half-century of the summer. He and Harry Gouldstone, who made 32 not out, took the visitors to an early close in steady shape, with 25 overs chalked off the day due to bad light.Rossington has grown as a batsman since being handed the Championship captaincy midway through the 2019 season and here was the latest of his captain’s innings. He drove Matt Taylor through cover and Tom Price past his left boot for early boundaries. Ben Charlesworth was pulled wide of long leg and Graeme van Buuren worked fine for four more, just after reaching a half-century in 58 deliveries.Further boundaries followed in what proved to be the day’s last action. He drove and edged Taylor between slip and gully and then, looking to whip to leg, saw a leading edge fall just short of the cordon. Perhaps the misjudgements gave the umpires encouragement to take the players off.Gouldstone was also very easy on the eye. A 20-year-old born in Kettering, he made his first-class debut in this fixture, abandoned after just one session due to Covid, a year ago. He appeared to have plenty of time as he punched Price off the back foot past point, worked Charlesworth through square leg and drove him through cover to raise the fifty partnership – perhaps the day’s best shot. With fixtures in Division Two and Three taking on the same context as juvenile contests at the same stage of the flat-racing season – prep for next summer and the chance to collect some prize money – performances like Gouldstone’s are essential to keep September relevant. In that regard, Gloucestershire had 21-year-old Price playing his fourth first-class match. He took the first two wickets – the prize scalp of Ricardo Vasconcelos, who edged a ball of tight line low to second slip for 37, and Luke Procter, who sent a skier back to the bowler trying to pull.Taylor also took two. Emilio Gay’s pleasant 44 ended lbw when he was struck in line but above the knee roll. Rob Keogh then shouldered arms but edged into his middle stump.

USA's MLC T20 tournament pushed back to 2023 at AGM

Further reduction in men’s central contracts, which USA board blames on pending lawsuit

Peter Della Penna21-May-2021USA Cricket board members announced that the Major League Cricket T20 franchise tournament, which was initially slated to launch in 2021, has been pushed back to 2023 primarily due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and to allow time for the AirHogs Stadium facility acquired last year in the Dallas suburb of Grand Prairie to be renovated before a scheduled opening in the summer of 2023 as one of the six franchise anchor venues for MLC.USA Cricket separately announced the creation of four new turf wicket facilities and plans to launch senior and U-19 women’s domestic national championships for August as part of wide-ranging plans unveiled during the Annual General Meeting, which was held on Sunday night via video conference on YouTube. However, the board also blamed a reduction in men’s central contract payments on pending legal action taken by two board members against five fellow board members and CEO Iain Higgins. As recently as December, USA Cricket and MLC had issued a press release touting the list of investors in MLC which was headlined by the Knight Riders Group, who have franchise investments in the IPL and CPL. The release included a video promotion for MLC’s plans narrated by Shah Rukh Khan. Among the other investors announced by USA Cricket for MLC included Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella, Paytm founder Vijay Sharma and Adobe chief executive Shantanu Narayen. In that release, USA Cricket stated that MLC was still planned to launch for 2022.However, the league has now been pushed back for a second time with USA Cricket officials claiming that they are hoping to have MLC T20 “exhibition matches” in the summer of 2022 before the first full season is attempted in 2023 including six full teams. Renovations on AirHogs Stadium are only expected to begin this month and may take up to two years to complete. Until the AirHogs Stadium project is completed, the only current ODI-approved stadium facility in the USA is Broward County Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida, leaving MLC short of host venues suitable for a large-scale franchise event. USA Cricket is targeting the acquisition or upgrade of six “international quality” turf wicket venues to be operational for MLC by 2025.Related

Meanwhile, USA Cricket confirmed that four new local turf wickets have been installed. Those cricket grounds are located in San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle, with each city serving as a designated home site for franchises in Minor League Cricket. MiLC is a 24-team T20 competition launched in 2020 that will serve as a feeder pathway into the six-team Major League Cricket franchise event. A fourth wicket has been added in Kentucky, but is not home to a MiLC team.Another significant development during the AGM was unveiled during a presentation from the finance and commercial affairs committee, delivered by independent director Catherine Carlson. In it, Carlson declared that certain programs had to be removed from the 2021 budget due to the lawsuit filed by board members Venu Pisike and Srini Salver in March. These included national youth tournaments at U-15 level and below, a national softball cricket championship, and a reduction in the budget for men’s central contracts. The board had already been compelled to make a drastic reduction to men’s central contracts prior to the lawsuit being filed. The contract pool budget for 2019-20 amounted to USD934,000, with some players receiving a 12-month central contract valued in the $90,000 range in July 2019.But the number of contracts as well as their overall budget in 2020-21 was reduced to USD235,000 owing to an empty international cricket calendar during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is believed that after the lawsuit was filed, a further reduction has been made in the shared pool for men’s central contracts. Player payments have been reduced up to 75% in some instances, with players now making approximately USD19,000 in a 12-month period. However, those cuts will not stop a first national domestic women’s championship in a decade, from August 2-8. The inaugural women’s U-19 national championship was also announced by USA women’s player and female board representative Nadia Gruny, to be held from August 11-13. Both these events are being held ahead of the USA Women’s team’s hosting of the ICC T20 World Cup Regional Qualifier in September when they will welcome Argentina, Brazil and Canada for the four-team round-robin event with the winner advancing to the global T20 World Cup Qualifier in 2022.USA board chairman Paraag Marathe also hailed the success of a new membership drive launched in early 2021 – a point of governance dispute at the heart of the lawsuit filed in March by Pisike and Salver – to grow membership from 723 members to “approximately 20,000” according to Marathe and Higgins. Ninety-two people were logged on at the start of the AGM held by video conference, while the audience peaked at 177 people – less than 1% of the number of total members – midway through the AGM.

Bismah Maroof takes indefinite maternity leave, as PCB mulls pregnancy provisions in contracts

Pakistan allrounder is set to become first beneficiary of the board’s maternity leave plans

Umar Farooq16-Apr-2021Pakistan batting allrounder Bismah Maroof is taking an indefinite break from cricket as she prepares to embrace motherhood. And the PCB is likely to use the opportunity to introduce pregnancy provisions in its central contracts system for the first time. The PCB’s central contracts for its women cricketers doesn’t have any specific clauses covering maternity leaves, but the board is now likely to amend the contracts to offer relevant support to female cricketers in the country. Maroof would, therefore, continue to earn her monthly retainer as per the PCB’s ‘A’ category contracts system and, at the time of absence, be eligible for all medical perks, becoming the first player to benefit from the new pregnancy provision.

The designated Pakistan captain, Maroof, 29, last played an international match in February last year, during the T20 World Cup in Australia. She had pulled out of the tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe earlier this year owing to “family reasons”, with Javeria Khan stepping in as captain.Maroof is Pakistan’s second-most-capped women’s player in ODIs, with 108 appearances against her name, with Sana Mir leading the list with 120. In the ODI run chart, too, Maroof is second with her tally of 2602 runs, after Khan’s 2693. In T20Is, Maroof 108 appearances is most by a Pakistani woman and she is the top run-scorer among them with a tally of 2225.The tour of Africa remains Pakistan’s only assignment since the Covid-19 outbreak was declared a pandemic in early March last year. The PCB recently called up a group of 26 national women cricketers for a skills and fitness camp in Karachi as a part of their preparation for a proposed tour of Sri Lanka next month. The probables are due to assemble in the city on Saturday for a seven days of quarantine before the 15-day camp will formally begins on April 24.

Perfect for Murillo: Forest eye "one of the most underrated young CBs"

da pinnacle: This summer, Nottingham Forest are once again set to enter the transfer market for reinforcements despite their already heavy spending since promotion back to the Premier League in 2022.

da dobrowin: Evangelos Marinakis has spent upwards of £200m on new players, with 34 new additions arriving at the City Ground in the attempts to make the Reds an established top-flight side after a 23-year absence.

In the two campaigns back in the Premier League, Forest have survived relegation on both occasions, finishing perilously close to the drop zone – undoubtedly underachieving after such significant investment.

Numerous attacking players have been money well spent, with the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi all set to make the club a hefty profit as a result of their impressive displays on Trentside.

Defensively is what has prevented the Reds from pushing further up the table, with the club looking to rectify their frailties with the signing of one player who Marinakis already knows.

Nottingham Forest interested in signing new defensive talent

According to a report from Portuguese outlet Record earlier this week, Nottingham Forest are battling multiple other Premier League sides for the signature of centre-back David Carmo this summer.

The 24-year-old, who represents Angola, also has interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers and East Midlands rivals Leicester City, with Forest potentially having the edge in the race for his signature.

Carmo spent the second half of last season on loan at Olympiacos, a club also owned by Marinakis, with his links to the Greek shipping magnate potentially helping the Reds in their attempts.

The centre-back is contracted to Portuguese side Porto, with the club potentially looking to cash in on Carmo whilst his stock is at his highest following his Europa Conference League triumph at the end of 2023/24.

He’s certainly demonstrated his talents in Greece and on the European stage, with the former Olympiacos loanee potentially being the perfect partner for current Forest star Murillo.

Why Carmo would be the perfect partner for Murillo at Forest

Brazilian centre-back Murillo has been superb since his £15m move to the City Ground last summer, starting in 32 of the 38 Premier League games last season.

Murillo

His subsequent form has seen him linked with a £60-70m move to the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham, but the Reds will desperately want to keep hold of the youngster with the former Corinthians talent able to form a perfect partnership with Carmo next season.

In his 31 games across all competitions last season, Carmo demonstrated excellent qualities on the ball, averaging 51 passes per 90 at a pass completion rate of 79% – fitting into Nuno Espírito Santo’s system of comfortable ball-playing centre-backs.

On average, four of the 51 passes per 90 were progressive, showcasing his desire to want to play forward, with his tally over 1.1 per 90 higher than Murillo who has excelled with the ball at his feet during his time in England.

The Porto defender, who’s previously been dubbed “one of the most underrated young CBs in Europe” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has one figure that would certainly bolster Forest’s defence, also making him the perfect partner for the 21-year-old.

He’s averaged 4.4 aerials won per game, dominating in the air, adding an aerial presence to Nuno’s side which conceded the most set-piece goals in the Premier League during 2023/24.

Whilst it’s unclear how much a deal for Carmo would cost Marinakis, he must pursue a move for the talent who he’s previously employed, with his talents certainly helping the club in their contained pursuit of top-flight survival.

He’s constantly showcased his abilities, with Carmo having the potential to be a hit at the City Ground, but also allowing the club to make a profit in the future – further boosting their PSR standing.

Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner rewarded with their first West Indies contracts

Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Sheldon Cottrell and Oshane Thomas cut from the list

ESPNcricinfo staff05-May-2021Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner, who helped West Indies secure the fifth-highest successful chase in Test history in Chattogram in February earlier this year and then were also impressive during the home Test series against Sri Lanka, have been rewarded with their maiden red-ball central contracts, for 2021-22. Wicketkeeper-batter Joshua Da Silva, who had narrowly missed a hundred in the Dhaka Test, also got his first red-ball deal.Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein won a white-ball contract for the first time. Hosein, who picked up three wickets on his ODI debut in Bangladesh, was impressive against Sri Lanka as well.Roston Chase, who had an all-format contract last year, was dropped altogether from the list this time. Chase, Hetmyer, Cottrell and Thomas had missed the white-ball fixtures against Sri Lanka at home after failing to reach the minimum fitness standards set by CWI. Later, Chase and Hetmyer cleared the fitness tests but were not picked for the Tests against Sri Lanka.Shane Dowrich and Shamarh Brooks – both played their last Test in 2020 – lost their contracts.”I am happy for all the players who have been offered retainer contracts for the upcoming period,” Jimmy Adams, CWI director of cricket, said in a statement. “Especially pleasing was the number of players who were awarded first-time contracts in recognition of their performances during the period under review. I know that the eleven players who have lost their International retainers will be striving and fighting hard to get back into the teams and earn their central contracts back next year.”These players, along with our T20 specialists, will ensure that we have genuine competition for places that will push everyone to attain higher standards of performance.”Despite being dropped for the white-ball series at home against Sri Lanka following mediocre returns in the Super50 Cup (seven wickets in six matches at an economy of nearly 7), Hayden Walsh Jr retained his white-ball deal.West Indies central contracts list
